    Penrhyn Castle

    August 27, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

First stop on my trip was an impromptu visit to Penrhyn Castle, not my usual visit as by UK standards it is a VERY new Castle, built between 1822-1832, though the current castle is reconstruction of a previous castle on the site that was built in 1438. Despite its relatively short history it was a beautiful house with some great historic art and fantastic views over to Anglesey.Read more

  • Beaumaris

    August 27, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

So my trip around the coast of Anglesey will be anti-clockwise, with the first town being Beaumaris. After finding a spot to park- which involved parallel parking, I did miss having someone to help me in, but I did it none the less.

While in the town I visited Beaumaris Castle, a fortress of perfect symmetry it is sadly the greatest castle that was never built. Building work began in 1306 by Edward I, but sadly were halted in 1330 due to a lack of money and a potential war brewing with Scotland. Today it is a World Heritage Site.

  • Castell Aberlleiniog

    August 27, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Final stop of the day is Castell Aberlleiniog, built by the Normans between 1080-1099. It in a very secluded location nestled in the trees behind the town of Llangoed, but it would have been completely open when built offering a strategic position over Conwy bay.Read more

  • Benllech Bay

Next stop is Benllech Bay. I didn’t realise how close this was to Red Wharf Bay, but a short walk around the coast on the beech and I could see the town in front of me. It was a great little sea side town with lovely views. Also used the opportunity to find the spot where my mums childhood picture was taken, can say I found the spot and it is almost identical 40+ years later.Read more

  • Din Lligwy

    August 28, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Next historical spot was Din Lligwy a 4th century AD town built during the latter part of the Roman occupation. It is very well preserved with the clear footprints of buildings still visible to this day. A short walk from Din Lligwy is Lligwy burial chamber, this monument was erected at the end of the Neolithic age (2500-2000 BC) for the communal burial of the village. Though completely open now it would have been covered with a mound of Earth.Read more

  • Parys Mountain

    August 28, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Parys Mountain was the site of an 18th century copper mine, the area was excavated by miners using nothing more than picks, shovels and gunpowder. The yields of copper were so great that Amlwch became known as Copper Kingdom dominating world copper market for well over a decade. Even today, there is thought to be about 6 million tonnes beneath the old mine workings.Read more

  • Porth Wen Brickworks

    August 28, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

3Km walk down to Porth Wen Brickworks, a deserted Victorian brickworks factory on the coast, this little hidden gem was a fantastic find. A little dangerous in parts, but the scramble down the hill and through the factory was worth it for the great little bay behind. A well deserved swim was needed after working down.Read more

Early morning start today to see the sunrise over the Welsh mountains, luckily the weather had cleaned up and I was able to see all the way to the mainland. Perilous drive down to the village, being a tiny singletrack lane and meeting a bin lorry on the way down, certainly brushed up on my van reversing skills.Read more
