  • Walking along Vienna ring road

    The next stop was a long walk around the Vienna ring road, filled with amazing architecture including:

    • Museum Quarter - with statue of Maria Theresa (1740-80), & lady Europa.
    • Parliament
    City hall
    • Opera House
    • Hofburg Palace
    • Karlskirche

    We walking around 5-6KM around the museum quarter and ring with plenty to see along the way.

  • Schonbrunn Palace

    The next stop of the day was Schönbrunn Palace. This was the seat of Austrian monarchy’s summer residence for hundred of years, but was last modified in the 1750s by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria who received the house as a wedding gift. More recently it was used up until 1918 when the Austrian royal family fell and the Republic of Austria was formed.Read more

    Another day, another country! Today it’s a short trip across the border to Slovakia 🇸🇰 and it’s capital Bratislava.

    Our first stop in the city was the old town, inhabited for 500 years ++, and apart of many different countries including Austria-Hungry, Czechoslovakia, puppet state of the USSR and many thing in between.Read more

  • Bratislava Castle

    Mostly a reconstructed castle, Bratislava castle sits at the top of one of the many hills of Bratislava, the castle has never ever been attacked. It was the seat of Austria monarchy and a firm favourite of Maria Theresa who would come from Austria for a holiday- she probably come for the cheap beer!

    Today though it’s a great spot for looking out across to Austria, and Hungary, and over to the socialist part of the city with its towering apartment blocks.

  • Soviet Bratislava

    The final stop on the tour of Bratislava was a trip around the socialist parts of the city. This included a hike up to the Slavin monument, a war memorial for Soviet soldiers who died liberating Slovakia from Nazi Germany. After this we stopped at a building voted the worst in the world (it resembles an upside down pyramid and is now a TV HQ for a national Slovakia channel). Then final it was on to independent square which includes plenty of Soviet building, adorned with art work depicting the roles of the Soviet workers, from farmers to mechanics, soldiers to housewife.Read more

  • Bucharest, Romania 🇷🇴

    Straight off the plane and into central Bucharest! The architecture is seriously stunning… does not feel like you’re in Eastern Europe at all, add the fact that the language has romance origins, it is more akin to Italian or Spanish, than the Slovak language of Eastern Europe!Read more
