    Day 542: Exploring Regensburg

    August 10, 2018 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Regensburg is a world heritage city with a bit to see, so off we went. Caught the bus into town rather than walk, and had a good explore. Most interesting points were the old stone bridge, dating from the 13th century. For many years it was the only stone bridge across the Danube meaning that it made the town rich, as the only year-round crossing available (ie not affected by ice, floods etc). Adjacent was the world's oldest bratwurst kitchen, which was originally the construction office and then started serving snags to fishermen and harbour workers.

Lots of nice buildings in the old town too, including a big cathedral which we enjoyed. Also surprising was the presence of several tower houses, like we'd seen in Siena and other parts of Tuscany. Basically the same thing - houses built as towers by rich nobles wanting to out-do each other, because naturally the owner of the tallest house was the richest and most important!

Exhausted by mid afternoon, we headed back to our fruit fly flat and spent the rest of the time working.
