    Tyler to Dallas

    4 de fevereiro de 2024, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

This morning we drove into Dallas to visit mom and dad. As we drove, Sherrie called and we talked nearly an hour. She was driving up from Houston to visit mom and dad.

Glenn treated me to Aspen Grill, one of our favorite restaurant. We checked into a Choice hotel and Glenn then did an hour of Ubering.

We attended our community group (Northwest Bible Church) at Lynn Rogers home in Highland Park. It’s been nearly a year since we met with the group.

  • Layover in Dulles airport

    6 de fevereiro de 2024, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 32 °F

We had a good 6 hour layover here in northern Virginia. We used our 2 free United club passes.

This man came up to Glenn and made a favorable comment about the Dallas Cowboy hat he was wearing.

2 hours later, we stopped talking. Holly and Chris are from Chicago. She works for United Airlines, so they’ll be on standby. Lovely folks.Leia mais

  • Long 13 hour flight

    6 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

We had an uneventful flight to Capetown. Glenn and I sat next to a man that was traveling with his wife and 2 children, sitting across the isle. He is South African and he married a Canadian. Very nice and helpful man. He said to feel free and get up anytime.

And we did. I stretched my legs several times.

I finished watching “You Got Mail”, then after supper, Glenn and I started watching “Sleepless in Seattle” and I tried to finish this movie 2 times and never did. I’ll try it on the return flight next week.

We picked up our rental car after Glenn got a chip for his “second” fone.

We’re driving like they do in England. Left side.

    Think left. Think left.

We got to our Airbnb. Parking on the 4th level and our apartment is on the 6th overlooking the bay. We took a shower, got connected to the local WiFi, then headed to the corner restaurant/bar. Service was slow however my fish and chips was delicious. Glenn shepherd pie. Lots of pepper sauce. Nice and not.

As we walked through the custom area, we had flashbacks when we were on the tarmac in 2020 getting the charter plane from the NCL Spirit.

We cancelled our zoom call with Candace and will pick up later with her.

  • Table Mountain Aquarium

    7 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

I didn’t sleep too well - must be jet lag.

We walked to a nearby hotel that gave us instructions to all 5 minutes to the Convention Center and catch the Hop on Hop off bus there. We got on the red line that took us up to the gondola for Table Mountain. Even though there was a cloud at the top of the mountain, we still took the gondola ride. Interesting, the gondola itself was rotating around as we journeyed up.

We then continued down the Red line to the Two Oceans Aquarium. Fantastic exhibit. Reminded me of the Sydney one.

As we boarded to the Blue line bus, I fell asleep on Glenn’s shoulder. We were in traffic. Next stop was the botanical gardens. We had a frittata and cheese cake at the entrance of the park. Cafe shop.

We chatted with 2 ladies from Holland as we stopped to take photos. As we were getting on the bus again, our friend Dennis and Jane were up on the top deck. Amazing. We are going to spend Friday anyway with them and earlier in the morning, Jane had texted me and asked us to come to their Airbnb for dinner. So we were heading to their place after the Bus tour.

All in all our accommodations were good at the 12 story high rise. No AC. Beautiful sunrise. Close to the Hop on Hop off bus line. It took an adventure to park the car and get the lock box out with the keys to the place, but it worked!

    Now heading to Megan’s place.

  • Find Penguins

    9 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

    Lovely place at Boulders Beach

Today we traveled with Dennis and Jane to see the Penguins and then down to the famous Cape of Good Hope and Cape point.

Dennis is a “birder” and was always educating us on the birds he was spotting.

Here at the Penguin place we saw lots of them. We even spotted one that was nesting on an egg.

    Glad we stopped here.

  • Cape Point

    9 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

    Southern most point of Africa.

We had a picnic pizza out under the hot sun. We started talking to two folks from Great Britain and found out that they were boarding on the Dawn in Wednesday and they were on the Spirit with us in 2020. Small world.

We rode up the tram for a better view.

  • Visit with Mike & Adele

    10 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

We left Fish Hoek around 8am to drive to Signal Hill so I could paraglide however by the time we reached SH, the winds had changed and it was not favorable to jump off the cliff or either run off the cliff. Feeling disappointed, we schedule for me to do it on Monday before we return our rental car.

We headed on northeast towards Velddrif where Mike and Adele live. We pulled out and stopped at KFC in Atlantica and saw a little of more of the African culture.

And the highway was super super straight. Desolate land; it reminds me of New Mexico, dry and adobe houses.

We pulled off onto the gas station to use bathroom. Glenn bought Krispy Kreme.

We spent the rest of the afternoon and well into the evening talking about Guatemala and the people we know.

From 7pm-8pm we watched the memorial service for Barbara Sage. Doug Livingston spoke and the Blycker’s did the music.

  • A Day with Mike and Adele

    11 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We drove to the local coffee shop (of course) and also saw some dried fish drying on the line.

We drove 30 minutes away to a Greek resort and picked up Adele. We walked along the board walk to a restaurant. Nice over look.

I ordered soup to calm my stomach. I had diarrhea earlier in the day. Glenn and Mike went to church while I rested.

After lunch we drove further down the coast and watched kite surfers.

Pulled into gas station to get gas, then to check tire out….they’re “plugging” it now…in the mean time I walked to grocery store that reminded me of Whole Foods and got ice cream bar.

It’s hot here! Beautiful area. We even saw some flamingos!

I’m Glad to have spent 2 days with Mike and Adele. Yes we laughed and laughed. Mike reminds me a little of Jeff Orcutt where he is always sharing Jesus and always friendly to strangers.

  • Super Bowl & Breakfast in Bed

    12 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    The Super Bowl
Started at 1:30am South Africa time. We both went to bed by midnight. I woke Glenn up around 3am to wake remind him of the game. He said he watched the first quarter. He gave me the score.

Then later during the night Glenn would tell me the score as I was falling back to sleep.

At 6:30am as I was about to get ready for our long travel day, Mike knocked on our door with a tray of hot coffee and juice and scones. Delicious

Now heading towards Table mountain so I can Paraguide then for our 8pm flight back to the USA.

  • Paragliding in Capetown South Africa

    12 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Check this off my Bucket List!

    It was a soft landing.

The quickest 5 minutes in my life, but well worth it. My guide’s name was Franscois. He’s done it many a times!

  • Long day of travel

    12 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

43.5 hours from door to door (Velddrif-Capetown-Newark-DFW-Tyler)

After my wonderful experience with paragliding we headed towards the airport. We returned our rental car, then sat at the table at “Wimpee” and shared a chicken dinner.

We changed to more comfortable clothes, and then met up with Jane and Dennis for our return flight.

We boarded UA flight an 14 hour flight to Newark, NJ. It was a long flight. I took more cat naps than I ever have before. I finally finished watching “Sleepless in Seattle”. I watched several episodes of The Office. And fell asleep again too.

We landed in a snow storm in NJ. Our flight to DFW was delayed by 1 hour. We finally landed and drive to see Mom and Dad.

Upon arriving into Tyler, we stopped at Brookshire’s for groceries.

A beautiful week, connecting with the missionaries and seeing stuff around Capetown
