    26 de mayo de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

    Packing up from Diamond Bar.
The 3 musketeers arrived at 11:30.
I figured out a bike shop where Wes needed a new cassette. So Glenn and I had to drive 45 min away to a town, then 45 min back.
There was kinda Caicos with the luggage and all, but it got all settled .
We left a boat load of boxes for the Hoppers to mail to the DeWitt’s house in DC.

  • Hollywood and the road trip

    27 de mayo de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

We made several stops along the way where the camera crew were filming, like the big sign of Hollywood on the hillside. We drove through Beverly Hills and saw some rich and expensive homes. About 1 hour before lunch, Jeff suggested LeRoys to stop. I immediately texted Ed Pamela Barden and asked her to join us. Because we lost the riders, they went directly to the restaurant and found it was full, so we ate at Mimi’s. We enjoyed talking to Pamela and Gary. Of course we talked about retirement and illnesses.
We continued on towards the wigwam near San Bernardino. Tonight I share the wigwam with Caroline.

Day 2 San Bernardino - Barstow spprox 88 miles
    Major conversations - 3
Lazy boy chairs discarded along the hiway - 3
    Sunny blue sky mild temperature

We had a little bit later start this morning, however I got up and took a shower at 4:30 am and I was sitting outside on a little bench at 5:30am watching the sunrise. I was able to get on my computer and update my blog.

Then I went with Glenn to get the pick up order for breakfast. That worked fine to have breakfast brought to the wigwams.

After breakfast, we headed out towards Barstow. We made several stops along the way. At one point, Neil stopped and talked with 2 motorcycle guys. They talked and filmed for about 30 minutes, while they were talking, Vela and I got out of the van and walked to exercise. We also prayed along for Neil and his conversations.

We rode into Hisperia and had lunch at a local hamburger place. Glenn went next door and got a MetroPCS plan so we could have more data.

We stopped several times for the photographers to set up their drone shots. We stopped along a deserted Route 66 road for a picnic. As soon as we arrive, we jump out and start setting up. Glenn digs through the first row of seats and pulls out the blue dufflebag that houses the sheets, some towels, and the Bolivian blanket. Glenn rugs up the blanket for shade.

We pull out sandwiches supply. And our makeshift table was used as folks make their ham, turkey, and cheese sandwiches. Two of the bicyclist made their own sandwhiches. They were sitting in the van to keep cool.

My dad is enjoying following us moment by moment on the Find My Friends app. And this is a quote we got from him as we were parked in the middle of the desert having our picnic lunch.

Mother and I drove over that same road in 1952 in a car with our airconditioning with one bottle of water - it was hot hot hot. Never forget - we were right there where you are right now!!! but we made it, I hope you do!!!

DAY 3 Barstow - Needles California
Average miles for today - 118 miles
Rail road trains that I counted - 14
    HOT HOT HOT HOT!!!

There are several times during the day where the camera car crew will stop and set up an opportunity to film while the bikers are going along on the lonely stretch of Route 66 road. And then they'll stop and move on ahead about 20 miles and wait for the cyclists to come breezing by. Its always fun to see how this evolves and how it will turn out. I like the drone going ahead and doing the arial shots.

Today was very dusty and hot. There was no shade anywhere. The sun was beaming down. The ride for the cyclists was steady uphill climb. We were in the middle of the Mohave Desert!

  • Day 4 Needles, Cal - Peach Springs, Ariz

    29 de mayo de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

DAY 4 Needles, CA to Peach Springs, AZ
    Miles today - 103
    Casinos I counted - 1
    Not Hot at all today

We left Needles California a little later than schedule. The guys were still gearing up.

Today was a ride straight on Route 66. No questions as to where to go. The first 1.5 hours, it was pretty much level. And then the route went straight up. I mean up. I don’t know how the did it.

Next stop was in a western small town of Oatman, just at the top of the hill. Neil stopped and talked with 3 people here. Again, I don’t know their story, but after this bearded guy on his bicycle, Neil talked with 2 motorcyclists who were all decked out in their black biker gear. Oatman was a good stop for a potty stop. And some folks got ice cream to go.

After Oatman, it was downhill. The riders loved it!

We had lunch at In and Out in Kingman, AZ. Jeff and I had picked out a local Route 66 diner but it was over-ruled by the guys. That's ok. They had seen a HUGE sign while on the service road of I 40 advertising In and Out. It was hot and crowded. I think we stayed there about 45 minutes and the guys continued on. Neil had a conversation with Ron at the Texaco store a few miles down the road.

After Kingman, it was Hackberry - a small touristy town that had lots of Route 66 stuff.

We continued on to Peach Springs, AZ, which is where the Hualapai Lodge (Indian reservation). This was one long day, but a good day. Good day of conversations. No one got lost.

  • Day 5 Peach Springs, AZ - near Flagstaff

    31 de mayo de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Peach Springs, AZ - Bellemonte, AZ
    Miles today - 105
Total Hamburgers we've eaten already - 4 (and this is just Day 5)
Trains whistles through the night - every 15 minutes (ear plus provided by hotel)

Today we got up especially early so I could finish my stuff on FindPenguins and also my blog. I'm trying to do a blog a day. Its pretty strenuous task to keep up.

Glenn and I did sit down to eat b'fast this morning in the restaurant. We ordered eggs and bacon. And we split the order. Basically, we've been ordering 1 hamburger,, or 1 sandwich or in other words, just sharing a meal each time. Its working great. I can't imagine how we would do it by eating every meal.

As we were packing the van, Wes pulled a fast one on Glenn. Glenn knows that his green suitcase, he will never need during the day. However about 15 minutes before we were pulling out, Wes asked for some item out of THAT green bag. So, Glenn graciously pulled out the 5 or 6 suitcases to get too Wes's. He apologized profusely! And we'll ribb him about it. If there is anyone on the team that we have a great relationship with, that is Wes - the calm cool guy. Wes is always miked up and we can communicate with him from the van.

There was some confusion let the entrance of the hotel about the time we were leaving. Jeff C noticed another group of people that were waiting for a tour to the Grand Canyon and he was wearing a Young Life T-shirt with a bicycle emblem on it. Jeff had reached out to a particular YL group from Tulsa about them riding a little ways into Tulsa on the day Neil rides, however they kinda dismissed it. Come to find out, this particular guy is from Tulsa. Jeff exchanged contact information with him and I believe he has already reached out to the YL folks in Tulsa and because of this "Devine appointment", it looks like this will happen. How cool is that.

There was some filming going on several times during the day, where we would have to pull back or speed up ahead. Coming out of Peach Springs, the guys had a really big climb. Then just about 1 hour into the ride, we pulled over at the Grand Canyon Caverns for people to stretch, get more water, etc. This was a unique stop with lots of Route 66 stuff all on the wall.

As they were riding into Segliman, the film crew wanted to film some shots. There were 2 restaurants that were highly recommended. One was Road Kill Cafe and the other was Snow Cap Drive Inn. The bikers chose the later one. Vela was being our comedian and reading the menu. Road kill Rabbit, Road kill, chicken, etc. She is hillarous!

Everyone ordered hamburgers or hotdogs, milk shakes and fries. We sat on picnic tables. This place was quite unusual. Signage everywhere. Route 66. I bought about 10 post cards. I DO NOT KNOW when I'll have time to write a note, but I will.

At one point in the journey today, the head winds were so strong, that Glenn helped by being in front and "drafting" for the cyclists. I mean it was very strong. Once we got to the interstate, the shoulder was pretty rough, so we elected to pull off at a stop and load up the bikes. We then drove about 20 miles down the road to when the Old Hiway 66 was not part of the Interstate. At this point, the #CC2C or otherwise known as the Chuckwagon 16 drove on to the hotel to check in. No sooner had we pulled up than when we got a distress call that Neil had a flat tire.

We quickly peeped out of the Van, and Glenn turned around to head back the 10 miles to retrieve the folks. Also there was an urgency to get John W. bike to the bike shop, where they'll ship it next week. Now with a flat tire, there were some other minor repairs that has to be done on Wes's bike and probably Caroline's also.

Glenn darted off in the van to take them into Flagstaff to meet the 7pm cut-off time. I helped deliver the luggage that was placed on the sidewalk.

I'm also trying to edit this FindPenguins so I can keep up today. There is a changing of the guards tonight. Una flies in and John W, Joy and Paul fly out. So, there will be some relearning this stuff again. But it'll be good. Glenn took a van load of folks back into Flagstaff for dinner. He is resting in the van, because he'll have an early morning "run" to the airport on Saturday before he packs up the gear and we start Day 6.

There were some meaningful conversations along the way. The night before, Neil walked next door to the Baptist church to meet with some folks there. He talked with Joe Montana, not the famous football player, but another Joe. And then on Friday morning, someone came to the hotel to meet with Neil. Along the day, I know Neil talked with the one guy who was very animated and excited, talked to him as he was getting on a tour bus in Selgiman, Arizona. While we were eating lunch, a biker stopped and Neil talked with him.

So often, we wonder how these Devine appointments happen, or why stuff happened this way or that way. Glenn came back to the hotel on Friday night after having taking 3 of the bicyclists to the bicycle shop for a "tune up", Glenn was outside chatting with a young couple. He was American and she was full blooded Indian. They met on Tender. And have 2 kids, and he is into Martial arts. Again, I don't know all the details to each of the conversation, but they are Devine appointments that happen.

If you have read this far.....this is what Neil posted on his Instagram account.

  • Day 6 Bellemonte, AZ - Holbrook, AZ

    1 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Day 6 Bellemonte, AZ - Holbrook, AZ (through the Navajo Reservation)
    Miles today - 101
Total number of Tumble weeds found in the middle of the highway - 1Well we had a little pep talk from Paul as he was leaving on Saturday to return back to Dallas and he wanted to give us some encouragement to keep the faith and some pointers on how to help the bikers each day. We needed to work a little harder since we were loosing 2 folks and gaining 1. We talked about some difficult situations that had to be resolved and that it was important that we keep to a prompt morning start time. Paul was Paul.

Glenn left at 5am to drive Paul, John and Joy out to the Flagstaff airport and he was back at the hotel room by 5:35am. I was helping him load up the gear. I also got him breakfast as he was loading stuff up.

The plan was to all drive to the bike shop where Neil had his flat tire repaired and leave from there. Neil did have a conversation with Sahsa, one of the employees at the hotel. After his 20 minute interview and conversation, we quickly helped Jon and James load up the Pathfinder with all the camera equipment. We were down the road not too late.

Once we arrived at the Absolute Bike Shop, he photographers did a shot of Caroline, Wes and Neil. And off they went.

When we started off in Flagstaff it was gorgeous. Pine trees and a snowcap mountain in the back ground. The weather was cool. A one point, Caroline had to stop and adjust her seat. Then about 10 miles east of Flagstaff, it suddenly turned desert. Long straight road. Hot Hot Hot.

They did not want to travel the popular road of I40 which is also Route 66, so Wes and Jeff looked at an alternate route which took them up through a Navajo Indian Reservations. We made a "pit stop" and the bicyclists continued on. They stumbled on a "Flea-Market".

We were at the Flea-Market for a good 2 hours. Here we made a picnic sandwich. WE really have to eat on the fly and in a hurry. Sometimes the cyclists will sit inside the air-conditioned van to cool off. After a quick lunch, Neil struck up a conversation with several folks. One couple, the wife didn't want to be on camera, but her husband spoke. He shared about life on the reservations. Neil had a conversation with another gentleman who son has served 2 terms in Iraq. I know. Neil had another conversation, but I'm not aware of the details. For a hot, sunny and windy day, it was good to even meet up with these folks on the reservation. Wes, Caroline and Neil continued on. I mean it was hot. Very Windy.

Around 5pm, Neil and Wes finished after going 102 miles for the day. The back drop was beautiful with a brown red mountain. I would say they traveled up hill and into the wind most of the day. Right at the end, we put the bikes on the back of the van and rode into Holbrook where we are staying. KOA.

Yes, KOA. I have never been at a KOA! The configuration here is 2 cabins that have 4 bed and 1 cabin that has 3 bed. The ladies are together and the men are devided.

Neil and Wes were starving, so we quickly unloaded the gear into the cabin so we could go to the Cowboy Chuckwagon where they serve hamburgers, steak, chicken. It was very good. Glenn and I split a chicken meal. While we were eating we all sat around the picnic table and discussed about the day. Neil asks us three Questions. What Inspired you? (Now I can't remember the other 2 questions, something along this line). My thought for the day, was summarized in how the scenery had changed as we putt putted across the barren land. We started off with pine trees and slightly rolling hills and then it dropped off into the baron land, and hot hot hot. We crossed the Navajo reservation where we saw lots of red rocks, and then ended up here in Holbrook off of I40 where there was color and green. We are near the Petrified forest.

After dinner while walking back to the "Girl's cabin", I bought 2 ice cream bars for dessert. After some more "cleaning out the Van", Glenn and I visited with Una while she was organizing the food boxes.

It was a long hot day. We have a new driver, as Una is driving the camera car and Jeff is sitting co-pilot. And I moved up to "first class", no just the passenger up front and Vela has the 2nd seat to herself.

  • Day 7 Holbrook, AZ - Broken Arrow Bible

    2 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Day 7 KOA Holbrook, AZ - Broken Arrow Bible Ranch (near the Petrified Forest)
Miles rides - 103 (Caroline did her first 100)
Ants killed in the Van - 34

Our accommodations at the KOA were surprisingly nice. I had always thought KOA were for just tents and stuff. I tried to get on the internet but was unsuccessful. While the team went to the Chuckwagon for breakfast, I stayed by the Van to watch the gear and the bicycles. We never go anywhere unless the bicycles are locked in a room, or someone is watching them on the back of the Van. Neil did another video conversation with a couple that had an RV just begin the girls' cabin. And then he had another conversation with a couple at the Pancake breakfast event.

Glenn filled up with gasoline as we pulled out of town. We needed to make sure we had a full take of gas because of the roads we were traveling. The cyclists were doing great. I think they stopped two times before we had lunch. We found the only restaurant opened in town. The Village Cafe. We tried to call ahead but no answer. Once we pulled over, I went into this small cafe and looked for a table. None. There was this one lady and her two daughters that offered their table to us. At this point, Neil was already engaging in a conversation, so Neil, the guy and the camera crew came inside and out fo the heat. Man was it hot. I told Uma our sandwich order that Glenn and I share, then we drove back 3 blocks to get some ice and bottles of water for the cooler. Once we returned, Glenn and I sat down to eat lunch. This was a long break. It is just hard. to have. a quick "pit-stop" when you are going to have conversations with people.

While Glenn was moving stuff around in the Van, I stood outside and were talking with the lady and her 2 daughters that gave up her table for us. She was so excited when I told her what the #conversationsCoasttoCoast was all about. She voiced that she started going to a local Community church and was really involved in it. She said she use to go to the Catholic Church but has really felt lead to go to this non-denomination church. She called up her pastor, Tim, came to the Village Cafe to meet Neil for a few minutes. He even prayed for Neil. It was exciting to encourage Monica to share her faith.

As we were leaving, and the camera crew were setting up a shot for Neil with the drone however he started having a conversation with an itinerate. Glenn was busy rearranging the back seats and securing the cold water bottles and all. I did not hear this conversation, but this is what I saw. Jeff, who is on the team, ask if he could use my to-go box and then he poor some water in the square container and walked up the itinerate man and his dog. I asked him what he was going to do with that water, and he exclaimed it was for the thirsty dog.

The scenery was just beautiful. Tall brown mountains that jutted up over the landscape. At one point, I exclaimed "Wow" as we turned the corner, then following right behind, Wes exclaimed "Wow" through the walkie-talkies!

We drove through the Indian town of Zuni and then on to Broken Arrow Bible Ranch. I called Alfie P. who recommended this location for our team to stay, and he was so excited to hear that these accommodations worked out. Also the camp did not charge us anything at all to stay and eat the dinner meal.

Our accommodations were very rustic to say the least. We each had our own cabin that had 8 other bunkbeds. And the shower and toilets were just around a few trees and down a gravel pathway. As Glenn was unpacking, we couldn't locate the Tomba's sleeping bags. We gave them our sleeping bags and we used the sheet and Bolivian blanket that we had stored under neath the seat - for just like a need like this. I was very happy to sleep under the wam blanket. We arrived well after the campers had their meals, however, we saw around the table and talked with Lois and her daughter and their experiences living in NM. This was not recorded or film, however it was a conversation where we learned more. They sang a Christian song in their native Indian language.

Everyone settled in and so did we. I was so tired, that I just plopped myself down on the bed, and I had Glenn cover me up and I was sound asleep - even in my clothes. Fortunately I did not wake up at all during the night. Someone from the team said they didn't mind waking up, cause they could see the beautiful night sky and stars. That's a good way to look at it.

Pictures are not in order...but were for Day 7

  • Day 8 BABR - Grants,Nm

    3 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Day 8 Broken Arrow Bible Ranch, NM - Grants, NM
    Miles - 56
How many deers we saw - 3

We had a late start time, because everyone was very exhausted. We got a message that we would be packing up and going 30 minutes down the road to a small town of Ramah for breakfast. We would need to load up and be ready to leave by 8:15am.

It was pretty smooth as we packed up, and crammed into the van. Neil visited with old men at the Stagecoach Cafe. I sent a photo and little note to Kris back at NBC so she could pray for the conversation that was happening.

I ordered pancakes and Glenn ordered biscuits and gravy. Very good. When I started talking about lunch options, Glenn realized that he left the "cooler" stuff at camp and then quickly called the camp to ask if they could bring it to us. By the time we were ready to leave, Ann showed up with the cold stuff.

The ride today was gorgeous also. It took us through beautiful and breathtaking locations. We stopped at the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano. Neil was exhausted, so after cooling down and stuff, the rest of the gang wanted to visit the Ice Cave and Volcano. So while Neil slept in the 2nd seat of the van, we ventured out to Ice Cave. Unbelievable how the Cave can be so cool. Aerage temperate is 33 degrees. That felt wonderful for the cyclist. They continued on to the volcano, but I decided to go back benches outside of the rustic lodge. Glenn and I then started talking to Dave and Debbie the owner of this place. Its not a national park, but privately owned. This couple have been married for 45 years, met and attended the Air Force Academy and served for 10 years. He was very interesting. Once Neil woke up, he started speaking and having a conversation with Debbie.

Well, this stop was longer than normal, but a good stop for Neil to get some additional rest and then for everyone else to take a walk and see the Ice Cave. The bikers got back on their bikes and continued onto Grants. As we pulled into Grants, we decided to go to the hotel, check in, unload the van, and then take a shower and be back at the van in 30 minutes. And we did!

I called ahead to the Steak Restaurant to make sure they had room for us. They had the table ready for our arrival. I had enchiladas and Glenn had Fajitas. Very good. Afterwards, we came back to the Southwest Motel and rested for 5 minutes before we took Una to the laundry mat and she washed ours and the boys clothes. Thank you Una. I told her to text us when she was done and we would pick her back up. We drove towards Wall-Mart and got some gas. We checked about a GPS Garmen to buy, since Betsy died 2 days ago. They did not have any.

The other folks that went to Walmart purchased vanilla BlueBell iceceam to go with the apple pie Neil bought at the Stagecoach Diner in Ramah. Good idea. We sat out on the park area and enjoyed the delicious pie. Glenn offered to give the "left over nearly melted vanilla ice-cream" to Kim, the owner of this cute hotel. Kim was very grateful and then even accepted Neils offer to have a filmed conversation together.

Glenn and I drove to pick up Una and on our return back to the hotel, there was Neil in the parking lot filming with Kim.

I am two days behind in my blogging, but I feel better, now that its only 10:30 and all I have to do is answer a few emails and send a deposit to Darla via Paypal and sometime in the next few days, I need to get my pills organized.

Good night. And if you have made it this far. Great

  • Day 9 Grants, NM - MoratieY, NM

    4 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Day 9 Grants, NM - Mororiaty, NM
    Miles - 85
How many we spotted along the fields - Dogs = 15 Horses = 22

The hotel we stayed on the 8th night was your typical iconic Route 66 Motel. Southwest Motel. It was cute and just adequate. Its what you think of a typical hotel room back in the 60's. Our room was full with our suitcases and then the food and blue box container, plus the extra bicycle.

We loaded up and was out of the parking lot pretty much on time, at 6:50am. As we were heading back on Route 66 to go to the Wow Restaurant, Neil Tomba suggested that we get a breakfast meal at the upcoming McDonalds. I then texted Jeff in the other car and they followed behind us. Glenn was out checking stuff when I ordered him the 2 burrito meal. I ate 1/2 of my Egg McMuffin. We headed out of town on Route 66 to the East. We were basically on the service road taking it north of I40 and also south of I40. At one point we were on about 5 miles of just a very poor road, and lots of washboard. It was very bumpy.

This day, the cyclists rode for Chessman Wealth Stragesis. And the cyclists rode their bikes with special t-shirts designed for this special day. I know there was another day, where Neal was wearing a special shirt for a friend of his that recently passed away. I don't know the whole story because We were not around when Neal was being filmed for the documentary.

We took a wrong road and then Neil spotted a man working on his head light on his car in the yard. Neil turned around and asked if he could have a conversation with him. There was a shade tree and we parked the van there along with the bicycles. Neil immediately to started filming. He was talking to a Jeff who grew up in the area and had recently returned to the area.

I sent a text message and a photo to Kris to start praying for Neil to have the right words to say. We were there about 45 minutes. His sister came out and gave us free tortilla. Very delicious. Neil gave them two t-shirts and his card. They gave Neil a pottery. Neil cried. He was moved by his kindness

We continued down the road and had to put the bicycles in the van for about 20 miles until we came upon the Carl Jrs. I ordered a salad to share with Glenn and a strawberry and chocolate shake. The salad was perfect for us. As we packed up to continue on Route 66, the wind was picking up. It looked like it could rain any moment now. Glenn followed the cyclists through Albuquerque. We got separated several times but caught back up together.

While we were going through the neighborhood, Neil waved to a guy that was working on his Winnebago bus. Glenn said a few words to him also. The cyclists turned around. We back a little bit so we would be out of the camera shot. The other car had to make a stop at the FedEX building so, they connected back with us. We were here while Neil carried on a conversation with the bearded man for about 45 minutes. As soon as we left, it started to rain. They got on their rain gear and continued east.

We did make another stop at a gas station for a potty stop, and Neil talked to this guy too. Only was a 10 minute conversation. We made another stop at Jack in the Box for the girls to go potty. Now it was time to head out of Albuquerque and start climbing. We were back on Route 66 and at one point, I feel asleep. They said I was asleep for 45 minutes and they even stopped to change a tire I believe. I didn't even wake up.

Occasionally I will send text messages to Dad to ask him if he knows where we are. He is looking on the Find My Friends app and can tell immediately. I love to read his comments to Glenn and Vela in the van.

We ended up on some very rough and challenging roads. Rocky and just only good for road bikes. Once they got to the top of the pass, Wes and Caroline got in the van. Neil continued on. We then hit a very steep road. I couldn't believe that Neil got up it. 19degrees slant. He made it to the top. And then we made another turn and Neil got in the Van. We started to head back to I40 when we got to a spot in the road that Neil said "50/50 Chance". We didn't take the chance. We returned back the way we came into that area, and headed to I40 and on to our hotel - named the Sunset Motel. Again, it is your typical Route66 motel form the 60's and 50's.

For supper, we got all the food out on the table and we made ham and cheese sanwhich and chips. We also had grapes, PB&J, crackers etc.

I have been sitting in the corner of the room for the past 2 hour to catch up on my blog and my FindPenguis account. I also had to call AppleSupport for help with getting my photos transferred from my phone to my MacBookPro. Glenn has already taken a shower and is snoring. He helped clean up the bicycles and I think he'll wait until the morning to clean up the van. We have a call time of 6:30am. Luggage has to be loaded and ready by 6:30am.

Leeping deer along the highway - 8
Flat tires - 2 - Neil on his bike and screw found in tire of Pathfinder

Unbelievable, my alarm woke me up. Normally, my body clock wakes me up, but not this morning. We still had plenty of time to repack and get our luggage out by the truck in time for Glenn to load stuff up.

For breakfast, we went to Lisa's Cafe at a local truck stock. The Tomba car had a nail in its tire, so this was a "flat tire" waiting to happen. They were at the tire repair shop at 7am as they opened up for the repair.

The cyclists were able to get to ready and leave after a good breakfast and then they were on their way. It was a change of plans instead of cycling onto Hiway 40, they would cycle south and then east and then north east back to Santa Rosa. The road did not have a lot of heavy traffic. Then when they turned the corner, they were "flying" with a tail wind. It was very very windy.

When we were just 10 minutes away from the hotel, Neal had a flat tire. I texted my dad and sent a photo that said "flat". And 5 minutes later, he said that he went to Google earth and said he saw a church with a red roof and that was the same one as in my photo I texted to him.

About 20 minutes down the road, Jeff got a phone call that said there was a wallet with money and credit card left in the room. At first we were told to continue on, then we were told to turn around and go back. So, that's what we did. But we were able to go the speed limit. We got back to the hotel and picked up the wallet, then sped down the 2 lane road to catch up with the cyclists.

Glenn couldn't find one of his bungee cord, so we made do with what we had. And all of a sudden when we passed an 18 wheeler, something comes flying out of the windshield. Glenn immediately stopped and he realized it was 2 of Wes's gloves that had slid through the top of the front bucket. We strolled along the Hiway and found the 2 gloves. Then as we drove closer to catch up with everyone, all of a sudden the lid flew off. Yickes. Glenn corrected that, and he then stole a bungee cord from Jeff's sleeping bag for his blue box.

Everyone kinda made sandwiches at 11am at the "pit stop". I didn't eat any thing. It was very very windy at this location, which was near a windmill farm. Huge white windmills blowing.

I feel asleep for 45 minutes as we headed eastward. We made pit stop at the local grocery gas station. Then we continued on.

Because it was so windy, the guys were making 20-30 mph. They were flying. And also we arrived in our hotel room at 4pm instead of 8pm. There was a hamburger event at the Santa Rosa town square - so we joined along. It was a promotion to make families and children aware of nutritions and to make better choices in their food and diet. We talked with several folks. Neil was able to talk and visit with a gal named Sarah. I believe she is in charge of this state wide funded program. I didn't hear the conversation, because Glenn and I were watching the bikes. Sure don't what them stollen.

After checking into the hotel and getting our room assignment, we went to the grocery store and to fill up our tank. We got some food for the bikers, plus we got some call from Neal that he needed some medication. There was no pharmacy in this small town grocery store, but we did find one thing he wanted. We also did a letterbox. One was located at the library, which was under the book drop off. Glenn and I returned the magnetic letterbox.

We had dinner with Jeff and Wes down the street. Now to rest up for tomorrow's day.

  • Day 11 Santa Rosa,NM - Adrian, Texas

    6 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Day 11 Santa Rosa, New Mexico - Adrian, Texas
    Miles - 107
    How many broken-down wooden windmills - 44
Turtles in the middle of the road - 1

Good morning. Today, actually we were on time. We had folks bring their luggage out by the van by 7:15am and it was all pack and we were ready to roll by 8:00am. We're finally getting it together.

There are two things that help Glenn in the process of packing. He puts on a dirty shirt, not the one he'll wear all day, and the 2nd thing he uses are those styrofoam knee pads. He put down a plywood floor to help move the luggage around and at times, Glenn is definitely on his knees. I think he has it down to a science. We had a short devotion then headed to Annie's diner. The cyclists got their food first and then loaded up for the 107 mile trip.

To avoid Interstate 40, which is also Route 66, the cyclist biked south and then east and then back north to Interstate 40. There was nothing to see. Barron land. It was hot too. Lots of blue sky. Again, Glenn followed behind and the Pathfinder was ahead with the 2 camera people. Several times they deployed the drone or they took shots as the cyclists drove by.

I did take a "cat nap" in the morning. My knees and ankles, especially my ankles were swollen, so I stuck them up on the dashboard. That really helped. We stopped once or twice before we stopped for lunch. Again, there was nothing out in the desert land of northeastern part of New Mexico. No towns. No one to run across and have a conversation with.

We had a picnic lunch out in the hot sun. The cyclists came and sat in the air-condition van to cool off. Una message Wes's calves at one point. We had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and also ham and cheese. Fruit was apple, grapes and bananas. Before the cyclists would get on their bikes again, Glenn and I would fill their bottles up with water. We ran out of "clean ice". But at least we had water.

Again, there was no gas station or convenience stores to stop at. The gals needed to go to the bathroom, so Una and Jeff drive on up ahead and they spot a small town, about 1.5 miles off the road that had a community church. Walk in, and in the back is the bathroom. Boom. Problem solve.

Wes and Neil cycle until past the 100 mile marker and then we head onto the interstate. We have dinner at the Russell's Truck Stop just before the Texas/New Mexico State line. Glenn and I shared a chicken fried steak dinner. We visited with Wes. And Neal visited with a couple that wanted to have a conversation. He was in the navy and was an Admiral. I don't know exactly what they talked about, but I took a photo and then sent a quick message to Kris who prayed for Neil.

Our overnight accommodations at in Adrian at the Fabulous 40's Motel. The air-condition works. and I'm getting caught up on my blog. I was also able to get on the internet and pay a bill to Darla. Glenn and I went outside to watch the ISS fly over.

  • Day 12 Adrian, Tx - Wallace Ranch, Tx

    7 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Day 12 Adrian, TX - Wallace Ranch, Canyon, TX
    Miles - 85
Turkeys and Rabbits in the middle of the road - 1 each

As I woke up this morning, I was counting the hours until our next stop - Rest day in Wallace Ranch. Man, I'm tired. I had a relatively good night. The hotel was unique in its own right.

I feel that we were more ready for the day, as we had requested ALL the luggage out by the Van by 7:00am even though the riders were not leaving until after breakfast at 8:00am. Glenn is getting the system down as to where each piece of luggage fits best in the van. He puts on his knee pads for the first part of packing and it has it so designed that when you open the back door, you only need to open the right side, which would have the essential tool repair kits and such. Maybe there will be extra water there for the cyclists.

We had a delicious breakfast at Mid-Point Diner, which is the mid-point on Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica pier, California. This is exactly half way between the two cities on the famous Route 66. We had a long discussion earlier in the #CC2C that you should pronounce Route 66, as "Root". Thank you Vela for this education lecture.

We did some filming with Vela as she learned more about the Armenian culture from our new friends, Aida and Victor. They took us into their hotel room and she describe the process of the incense and stuff. Beautiful expression of faith. Vela asked some very pointed question. Aida and Victor really loved making new friends. Neil also had a conversation with Ramona, the owner of the Fabulous 40's Motel. Neil encouraged her that she has the opportunity to make new friends each day and can share a little of Jesus with the folks that stay in their motel.

Then on the road again. The route took us along the service road of Route (pronounced: Root) 66. Insert smiley face here. There were moments when the photographers took video and pictures of the cyclists with the back drop of grass and windmills blowing.

Today, we had several good stops. We stopped at the famous Cadillac Farm. The cyclists took their bike into the corn fields. Vela started Facebook live. She is hilarious. Once out at the 10 Cadillacs, Vela grabbed a can of blue neon spray paint, took her shoes off and waded out in the mud to paint: #CC2C. Of course we were cheering her on. Once back on dry land, she painted #CC2C on the ground then Neil painted the "messy cross". This is a tradition for those that visit the farm, to paint graffiti on the 10 uprighted cars that are buried 1/2 into the ground.

Next stop was a bar-b-Que place in Canyon, followed by riding their bicycles into Palo Duro Canyon. Vela and I stopped and we looked over the edge. We walked to a gift shop and I purchased a souvenir spoon. Then we took the customary photo with the background of Palo Duro Canyon.

We loaded up the bikes onto the back of the vehicle and drove 40 miles to Wallace Ranch. Our next day off! Wallace Ranch has 4 bedrooms with double beds in each, then they have a cute red Box Car, bunk house where the Tomba's are staying. So cute. Wes and Jon are staying at a hotel in Amarillo.

Glenn and I along with Jeff and James drove into town of Canyon, so Glenn could fill up with gas. We were dry. And while he was filling up, we were inside of Braums getting hamburgers (I got a salad) and some breakfast stuff for the Wallace Ranch. It wasn't until 10pm that we got to bed.

Another day of good conversations with the Armenia couple, Ramona the owner of the motel, 2 Chinese cyclist that were fully loaded and couldn't speak a lick of English, 3 folks out at the Cadillac farm, and 3 folks at Palo Euro canyon and finally Bruce, the owner of Wallace Ranch.

  • Day 13 Rest Day

    8 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    Day 13
    Wallace Ranch
    Day OFF

I slept in til 7:30am, then didn't get out of bed until 10:00am. My body was crying out for that much needed day of R.E.S.T.

Our accommodations have been very relaxing. Glenn and I were in the master bedroom suite. He did find a step stool for me to use to get into the bed. This bed was so high. We slept good.

I did get caught up on my blogs and my FindPenguins account. And I feel GREAT. And then I was able to organize my weekly pills! I've been saying for several days now, that I needed to be caught up on my pills.

This day was such a blessing. I took a nap. Then I did the bake potatoes, Vela was in charge of the salad, Caroline prepared the vegetables and Neil helped with the cooking of the t-bone and rib-eye steaks.

After dinner, we sat around the large table and Neil led the discussion as we affirmed each other in their different roles. There were tears shed as some are riding or helping and have struggles 'back home', which is a part of reality. We laughed and we cried. Neil put his phone on the table and we sang along to two worship songs about God being our protector and He is with us.

After a quick clean up, we discussed the next day. 6:00am luggage should be out by the van, and breakfast at 6:30, and we leave by 7:25pm. The route is that we load up in the van and we drive to Pampa and then ride from Pampa into Foss, where the KOA is located.

It's after 9pm, I need to pack. Good night. Day 14 tomorrow! I'm rested. And I think the rest of the team is ready to continue with #conversationsCoasttoCoast/

  • Day 14 Wallace Ranch, Tx - Foss, OK

    9 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Day 14 Wallace Ranch, Texas - KOA, Foss, Oklahoma
    Miles - 102
Number of trucks that honked - 5
Winds speed all day - 30

Well back to the normal routine.I woke up at 4:45am and got ready. The time to have our luggage out by the van was 6:00am. Breakfast was 6:30am and we pulled out of the Wallace Ranch at 7:20am. Vela prepared scrambled eggs. I had cereal and bananas. We drove to Pampa. Texas and met up with the rest of the #CC2C team.

Two new fellows joined us. Tony and Tim. While they were getting all geared up and the mics on, Neil walked into the convenience gas station store and started talked to the gal. She shared her story how she has lived in Pampa most of her life and how she lost a child through an accident.

It was extremely windy ALL day. 30 miles an hour. It was pretty scary for me, because any gust of wind could just knock the cyclists over. Glenn spent a good amount of time drafting for them. There was constant communication between the van (Chuckwagon 16) and the camera crew car and Wes, one of the cyclists.

We stopped to use the restroom at a restaurant in Mobeetie. And then Neil started to really talk with several folks there. He talked with Mr. Boone who is a direct decendent of Daniel Boone. His great great Grandfather. Neil yelled over to me and said, Judy get me a 50.00 bill. Mr. Boone had a waiting or picture that he took, and Neil asked to buy it from him. He was soft spoken but shared his story. And then Neil talked with 2 Joes and they told of the history of the area. Again, Devine appointments along the way.

The town folks wanted to name this small Texas town in the panhandle, the name SweetWater, however there was another town already incorporated by that name. So, they ask the Cherokee Indians what was the Indian name for SweetWater. And that was Mobeetie. Come to find out later, the real translation is not sweet water, but buffalo dung.

We decided to eat lunch this quaint restaurant, named Cowboy Oasis. The service was slow, but the food was delicious. Glenn and shared the special of the day, Chicken Fried Steak. After a 2 hour break, the cyclists got on their bikes hoping the wind would have died down, but it hasn't

They continued on. Vela drove on ahead and scouted out the Pizza Hut in Elk City for dinner. We pulled into Elk City at 6:30pm. Shared a salad and then the ChuckWagon16 drove on to KOA in Foss so we could get the cabins ready. Neil, Caroline and 2 others rode on into KOA for 102 or 103 miles for the day, So proud of them.

Tonight, we have the girls (Caroline, me and Una) in 1 small cabin, Glenn is with James, and the others have cabins. Some with a shower and some without. This is my second time at a KOA. I think I could do this again.

Its been a long hard day. We just have a good "day off", but at least we didn't go anywhere, I did a load of laundry,. I kinda repacked, so I could snd some stuff back with the Coxs when we see them on Tuesday in Tulsa,

Day 15 Foss, OK - Edmond, OK
    Miles 118
How many truckers kindly honked - 3
How many rude cars passed us - 2

Warning: This is going to be a long Blog post

I got up before Caroline got up. I didn't want to be in the small bathroom when one of the cyclists should be in there preparing for the morning ride. So I tip-toed out of the small framed 1room cabin and walked to the community shower and bathroom. Once I got dressed and ready for the day, I went back to the cabin and got my laptop out. My pictures had not been synced from my iPhone to my computer when I was working on my blog on Sunday night, so here I was able to quickly add the correct photos onto Day 14 and send that out before we left on our journey for the day.

This morning, I realized that I hadn't taken a picture of Day X with Neil, so I quickly asked him if I could take his photo. The sun was rising and it was a perfect time to take the shot. I've wanted to ask him for the photo shot, but I know he is preoccupied with the day of cycling, but today seemed like a good time, as there was kinda a "lull" in the morning packing and such.

The riders left right on time. They had several other riders to join them from Dallas, plus Cherree, Neil and Vela's adult daughter had arrived and will be joining us for several days. As soon as they left, Glenn and I followed behind. We got on I40 and met them as they were going under the underpass where a bunch of birds were building their nests. I thought they were bats, but they were swollows Glenn said.

The bikers were headed to the McDonalds in Clinton. Neil ran into a motorcyclists who was traveling from Fresno or Orange County to Tennesses. We had met this same guy at the KOA campgrounds on Sunday night. Glenn and I had talked a little to him, and now we run into him agin at McDonalds. Neil was able to have a good conversation with him.

Once we got to McDonalds, we connected with Loretta and her husband. Loretta's niece is S Riffe from Northwest Bible Church. Loretta was just so super exited that the #ConversationsCoasttoCoast team was coming near her town. She is from Corn, Oklahoma. So, we made several missionary connections, as the Corn academy is famous for housing missionary kids from back in the 70's and 80's. I'm not sure if they still do that anymore. But they knew the Blyckers, Nellis from Mexico and Goertz. Now that I'm thinking, I bet they would have known the Phillippi kids. Any way, Loretta had her grandson with them, Jack and he just loved the idea of what Neil was doing. Coast to Coast conversations. And bicycles.

After a quick breakfast, the cyclists were off. We asked if we could take Jack in the van with us as we go down the highway for about 10 miles. Harold tased along. While we were driving, they got to listen to the walkie talkies and the communication that way. And we explained how we would stop for them to take a break and Glenn would serve them cold water, or just ice, or maybe some cheese sticks or even fresh fruit. We explained to Jack some interesting details about how they travel about 100 miles a day and their habits. I got a nice email from Loretta thanking us that we engaged with Jack. Even Neil had a picture of the two of them together. I was so blessed by what Loretta wrote to me in an email, that I must share it on my blog. I skipped through it earlier in the day, but really didn't read it word for word til right now, 12:55am as I write it. But I must enclose it and may it be a reminder of what it's like to share Jesus and be a light in the World.

    Judy, Glen, Vela,
It was absolutely a delight meeting the cross-country conversation team at McDonalds
this morning. Thank you so much!!!. Our 13 year old grandson, Jack Irick, is visiting
us, but lives in Euless, TX. He was so excited to learn there were fellow "Texans"
riding not just across America, but within a few miles of our home near Corn,
    Oklahoma.
Judy, your invitation to ride in the van and follow the bikers for 15 miles will
definitely compete with his trip to Disney World this summer. After meeting Neil and
the team, looking at your website, and watching several of the video posts, Jack
said, and I quote, "Today I met some people who are really sorta famousish".
Most of all, he saw the love of Jesus presented in a new, kid friendly, venue---a
    bicycle. That's Awesome!!
Now he is committed to follow you each day, pray for you and your bikes, no more
flats, strength to get up long hills and face wind, and for Jaden to be healed of
cancer. He wants to come to Northwest Bible Church and see Mr. Neil again after he
    finishes this ride.
The instagram picture of Jack sitting next to Neil at McDonalds has many proud views
    today.
Extend our thanks, appreciation, and love to Neil. We experienced JESUS in a
    fun-filled, refreshing way.

Our love, prayers, and blessings from the Oklahoma Heartland,
Howard & Loretta Schmidt, Jack Irick

PS: Glen, small world that several of your MK friends attended Corn Bible Academy

We continued on following the cyclists. They did make a quick pit stop out near some open corn or wheat fields. The done went up several times. One time we saw it flying right over I 40 was we were on the over pass, and the cyclists was on the service road. I know that will be a spectacular arial view.

Glenn was trying to connect up with John H. and another cyclists. We were trying to figure out where they could eat lunch. There were very many towns in this area. And we would pass through a town but it wasn't quite lunch time, and the next town was farther away. So, in communication with Jeff and (where's Vela when we need her? Side Note: Vela took one of the vehicles that had come from Dallas and was able to drive to the hotel, do some class work and leisurely drive down I-40 and wait for us to arrive 11 hours later and it only took her 1 1/2 hours) Glenn we decided to meet John at the Love's Traffic stop and then it was changed to stop at Sonic. Glenn and I split a hamburger and onion rings.

While sitting around the picnic table, John H got to meet their other cyclists. John knows this area. He knows what roads are good and what are not. He suggested an alternate route and he was leading the pack. I'm thankful that he was able to lead the group through the corn or wheat fields. It was here that we saw a lot of flooding. I hear that there has been massive flooding in the area, however, I haven't had a lick of TV or news in the past 2.5 weeks and even more. We saw debris of wood that was stuck in trees and you just knew it was from the effects of the flooding in the past few days or weeks.

We made a "pit stop" at a convenience store. And this time it was in the shade. So often we have found no shade (especially out in the dessert), so this was a welcomed sight. We had to keep pushing as tonight, most of the team was staying at a Home2Suite Hotel in Edmond and 4 of us are staying at a lake house just 15 minutes down the road. We also had plans to have dinner together after everyone showered. A bus load of folks from Northwest Bible and the Bureau Sunday school class had driven up to surprise Neal and encourage him.

We also needed to get Una and one of the riders to the hotel so they could take an "Uber" to the airport for the 8:15pm flight to Dallas. Two days earlier I had texted 2 folks at Metropolitan Baptist Church to ask if they could drive these 2 folks to the airport. And just like clock work, Rebecca volunteered. She was at the hotel waiting for us. The hardest thing was to get Una away from the gang so they drive through traffic and get to the airport and not miss their flight. Also, I had called Joanie to come to the hotel to pick up John. They were there for the arrival of the cyclists.

Next was the party at the Bar-B-Que place the Sharla L. had organized. We took Neil, Vela and their daughter down the road to the "surprise" party. I sat and talked "a mile a minute" with Judy S. She was so excited about my blog about this journey, and I'm thinking, "its just what I do, nothing special and Glenn doesn't even proofread my stuff, because we just don't have time, and my grammar is awful, etc, etc, etc." However, Judy went on and on and on about it. Neil give a special talk, on how he was really planning on having a party to celebrate Jadon. Jadon is a young boy who is struggling with cancer and how Neil is riding 1,000 miles or it might be 3,000 miles in the month of June to Cycle for Childhood Cancer. And its all because Neil was kind to a banker, that started a relationship that will hopefully point the family to Christ. And its all about having easy to start conversations with people and like Neil has said before, just being kind. Wow, where did that rabbit trail go?

After the party, drove 15 minutes past the hotel and 4 of us are staying in John's friend that has a weekend house at a private late. We quickly unloaded our stuff and then Glenn and I turned around and drove back out to the Wall-Mart store to get a few things. James needed some cold medicine as he was feeling kinda getting that "chills" feeling. Ugh. He also needed some toothpaste. Gotta keep those teeth clean. We picked up cereal and milk for the boys, and fruit, especially banana for Caroline. It wasn't until midnight when we got. back home.

During this trip, our "Betsy", Garmin GPS died, so Glenn and I purchased a New "Betsy" to help us navigate through the streets and hi ways. I'm going to check with Glenn to see maybe this new Garmin, we'll give her a new name. I propose we use Chuckwagon 16. Hmm

And guess what? The house was locked. I told Glenn to go around to every door and make sure. It was left open for us, so we didn't have a key. Sadly, Glenn had to call Jeff up and wake him up. Tuesday morning, Glenn will work at repacking the vehicle. The van gets trashed everyday. Because there is such a rush to get the water to the cyclists or maybe they want some that is not in their "box", then we have to try to remember where something was packed. And now with more cyclists here traveling along, it will be interesting to see how this works out. But then again, we'll have more cars too. Oh well.

Sometimes I feel I wish the day would have gone smoother, I wished we would not have made that wrong turn, but thankful that we only went 1 block out of the way, or that we could have gotten that bag of ice at the last gas station we passed or that I wasn't feeling so worn out.

My heart is blessed when I read this email from Loretta (Read above). I'm thankful that I have not had any major conflicts with the other team members. I especially am thankful that Wes has been kind to Glenn and me as we have learned some of the "cyclists lingo". And I'm thankful for the divine appointments we have inspite of our weaknesses. Because those wrong turns happen for a reason. Those extra smile to someone we meet make a difference.

  • Day 16 Edmond, Ok - Tulsa,Ok

    11 de junio de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Day 16 Edmond, Oklahoma - Tulsa, Oklahoma'
    Miles - 104
Roadkill 3 stuncks 10 possum, 8 turtles and 29 others smashed beyond recognition

It was a very short night. I didn't finish my previous ious blog until well after midnight. And since we were staying and sharing a bathroom, I wanted to get all ready to give Caoline plenty of time.

It was a beautiful sunrise. Bright red colors over the lake. We threw stuff into the van to made it to the hotel by the 6:30 deadline. And like everything else, there was a quick conversation with the front deck staff.

All the guys left, oh, I saw around 8:00am or even early. We followed behind catching up with them about 10 minutes later. Then we got a call on the radio from Wes that neil was needing his eye drops. Vela graciously said she would catch up with us. Bless her heart she got lost. How ever family about 10 minutes later she was able to catch up with us. At this point, Glenn us off his bike, head bended now and crouching his eyes. He couldn't see very we'll. The eye drops helps d somewhat. He then used a patch on one eye and used it later on the another eye. By the end of the day, m Neils eye wasn't hurting as bad and I noticed he wasn't wearing a patch at all.

Vela was on her own, as he drove to Tulsa and got to do some class prepartion work. We finally got back together at the hotel.

One of the stops we had was at a roadside fruit/vegetable stand. Caroline had 2 flat tires. Neil talked to two farmers. Father and son business that was struggling. They also mentioned the difficulty with the recent rains. He pulled out of his pocket an old knife and sliced the cantaloup. Delicious. Neil also purchased a jar of pickles.

As we were coming upon one of the towns along Hiway 66, things got really busy and hectic. We were proposing a restaurant in this one town so the cyclists rode towards it then Neil and crew decided to stop at Sonic. Again. They were engaging in these 4 Latin America folks and then Glenn continued on the conversation in Spanish. All 4 from Central America. 2 from Guatemala, 1 from Honduras and I forgot where the 4 person was from. They didn't have time to to have a conversation once they needed to return back to work at 12noon. They were painters and were repainting inside the school rooms.

After lunch we continued on. I started to take a short cat nap when all of a sudden Glenn stopped in the road. I looked up and saw Wes on the road. He quickly got up and brushed himself off. What happened his tire hit the part of another cyclists wheel and down he went. Just behind us a car stopped and the gentleman driving was a medic. Wow, an angel showed up at the right time. Wes didn't hurt himself. I think he was more embarrassed than anything. And of course this made a good part of the story.

I then looked at my text messages and there was one from Jack and Val Cox, who were up ahead waiting to cheer us on. They were parked along the side of the road. Then I checked out a text from Jeff. He wrote that Jon, the photographer, that his girl friends' father was riding his bike around White Rock Lake on Tuesday morning and died of a heart attack. I showed Glenn's the text and he read it to the group. We immediately stopped to pray. Wow!

We continued on our journey towards Tulsa. There were several stops like at convenience stores where there was shade and also a bathroom. We stopped in Spolovia, Oklahoma and Neil had a conversation with a police deputy, He mention how there has been some tragedy in the department. We stopped to take a photo by the sign on the highway.

Finally arriving at our Best Western Hotel on Route 66 around 5:30pm. I quickly got to my room to take a shower and get ready for dinner. Everyone down in the Lobby by 6:30pm. Glenn didn't get a chance to come up to the room as he was getting the van cleaned out. The shower felt good.

We had dinner at Mother Road Market. I texted John C and he came down to visit with us over our meal. Good good good to reconnect with him. We sure miss him and Gail down in Guatemala.

Tonight was a longer night. I needed to call Apple Support to find out why my photos were not syncing with my computer. Got that solved. I was literally 'fading' and nearly fell asleep on the phone with the Apple computer person.

Day 17 Tulsa, Oklahoma - Joplin, Missouri
    Miles 104
How many "Stand back" yelled from the front car as they shoot a drone shot - 7 times

oday, Neil and the camera crew drove out to Southern Hills Golf course and Neil was able to share some with the 15 men that gathered there. Again, I'm not sure if this is a weekly thing or if its's something special that Neil did since he's in town. After the breakfast Bible Study, Neal met us and the rest of the crew at a Wal-Mart parking lot just 20 minutes north o fTulsa. Instead of pulling into Walmart, we unloaded the bicycles at the Whataburger parking lot. Glenn parked kinda "crazy" as he's driving this big long long van, so the manager came out and mentioned Glenn was in the handicap parking. So, Glenn pulled out his handicap card. True Glenn.

It was a pretty straight shot on the 4 lane highway. Most of the truckers were kind to the cyclists. As we turned the corner in Chelsea, Oklahoma, Neil noticed a young man with a 9 or 10 year old boy with their fishing pole. Neil engaged a conversation with them and found out that Nathan had some trouble with the law and that he was going to Celebrate Recovery and was really doing good. HE and his son were going to walk about 1 mile down the road to their favorite fishing hole which is an old rustic out steel Route 66 bridge that is no longer in use. Neil asked if Glenn and I could take them out to the fishing hole and take some pictures. It was our pleasure to do that. I radio back to the cyclists that they should veer off about 100 yards and see this spot. Beautiful.

We continued biking (oops, cycling) along the small 4 land road, when I suggested we stop at the Hi-Way Cafe in Vinita, Ok. I read the reviews on Yelp and one comment was "don't let the outside appearance discourage you". Here we had several conversations. I think there were two sets of conversations here.

All the while I had been texting Virginia and her sister Evie to see where they were going. Virginia decided to drive 4 hours down from Hesston KS and meet us and spend one night in Joplin, MO with the #CC2C.

We connected in Miami, OK just before we got to the Braums. And Vela connected with her friend, Jody, who is from the Dallas area and was traveling through. As we rode into Miami, we were looking for a place to use the restroom. And the camera people were looking for a placel to have a great shot for the 3 bicyclists to "roll into town". They got their shot, then we followed Virginia to Braum and had a scoop of ice cream.

Oh, yea, just before Baums we stopped so the 2 cyclists fromDallas could load up their bikes and head on into town and catch a plane plane back to DFW

Im glad I connected up with Virginia. I then went straight to the hotel room with her and Evie. The rest of the team traveled on Historic Route 66 until they got caught up in a rain storm. I couldn't check into my room since Jeff was not around, but we got Evie and Virginia checked in.

Once we got up to her room, we waited for everyone else to arrive. I tried to get on the internet but couldn't. It wasn't too long until the whole gang arrived. They we cold and wet.

Today is Virginia's birthday. We went to Outback Steak House to make it a special one. It was fun to catch up. Thankfully we didn't need to "catch up too much". I had just seen her at Mom and Dad's 70th anniversary party just 3 weeks earlier. And it was another late night. It was after 10pm when we dropped Evie and Virginia off. Glenn and I needed to run to Walmart to get a few things and to fill up with gas.

We didn't get back to the hotel room until after midnight. And I didn't even try to get on the internet. We had a2 room suite. We pulled stuff off and took up to our room. Glenn took the big black box and put it inside for the night.

Again, another late night. But I'm thankful for the many conversations (even one in the city park in Miami, OK while we connected with Virginia. I'm thankful for the group of friends that drove to see us (Jody, Virginia and Evie and then a group of Tomba's friend that met them at the hotel here for a few minutes). And I'm thankful for the rain and the protection from the rain and elements
