    Uitgeest Campsite

    August 17, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Met up at the yacht harbour around 17.30 with Steve and Amanda who had cycled there from Hoek van Holland. First time ever that we pitched on top of a dijk! The soothing noise of the waves breaking on the sides as well as the cable noises from the sailing boats helped us to fall asleep quickly.Read more

  • Uitgeest to Texel

    August 18, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We set off along the coast of Noord-Holland towards Den Helder, the tip of the country. The sand dune cycle paths were very special with hardly any other traffic and a large array of different bikes in all sizes. Especially E-bikes!Read more

  • Texel to Vlieland

    August 19, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After arriving on Texel yesterday we very gingerly explored the island and ended up in Cocksdorp to wait for the ferry to Vlieland. The boat was a large fishing vessel with a specially adapted gangway on the front. We set of across the narrow channel whilst the seals were watching on. When we got to the other side the ship beached itself on the sandbank and the gangway was pushed out (see photo), we then all disembarked onto the soggy sandbank. A large wheeled truck came to pick us all up. Loading the truck was even more interested by the steep ramp where we had to push up our bikes and tandem! Followed by an roller coaster ride across the sandbanks and a huge dune to finish with!Read more

  • Vlieland naar Slappeterp

    August 20, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After a restful night on a 'natuur' campsite we set off to find a good swimming beach. The north-west side of Vlieland is covered by miles of sandy beaches with very few people. We managed to find a section that was covered by the KNRM, (RNLI) as we were a bit concerned about rip tides. This spot was perfect and we cooled down in a very warm (20°C) North Sea. Later that afternoon we caught the ferry to Harlingen and cycle on to Slappeterp.Read more

  • Slappeterp naar Earnewald

    August 21, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We had a lovely breakfast on a large table in the 'Tee Tuin' on the campsite followed by a gorgeous swim in a perfectly formed natural lake. This set the tone for the day and we cycled to Earnewald another Natuur campsite but this time also with storks and canoeing. We had a lovely trip through the various water ways with no other traffic present. The water lilies, herons, moorhens slowly making way for our double canoe. In the night the milky way spread itself out over our tents and the storks said a firm good night with their clattering beaks!Read more

  • Earnewald naar St Nicolaasga

    August 22, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Waking up whilst the low mist lingeres on the fields and the deer meander across the meadow. The storks sent us asleep the previous night with the clattering of their beaks. Off with the sun on our backs to catch the 10.00 pont in Earnewald, the Henley of Friesland according to Amanda.Read more

  • St Nicolaasga naar Medemblik

    August 23, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Today's ride was a classic Friesian ride with canals, pont crossings, tall ships, Friesian tjalks and Frisian cows. The target was to reach Stavoren at lunch time to catch the ferry across the IJsselmeer at 14:35. With a fair bit of wind against the average speed dropped a bit but good progress was made and after 28k we got to our coffee stop the cafe de Kuilart on the Johan Friso kanaal. We had great views and more appeltaart and oranje koek which was in fact pink! After another 40k or so we reached Stavoren in plenty of time. The cabin on the quay side served us with traditional 'kibbeling en friet' another food item on Amanda's tick list done! The trip across the IJsselmeer was like a Caribbean cruise with full sun shine and drinks served on deck. The IJsselmeer was created out of the Zuiderzee between 1929 and 1964 because of the threat by the North Sea on the coastline around the Zuiderzee. Some of the land was reclaimed and 3 polders were created. The IJsselmeer is a very popular watersport attraction for many boaters and other watersports. The great views of Medemblik welcomed us ashore and we cycled another 20k to Enkhuizen to our overnight camp.Read more

  • Medemblik to Uitgeest

    August 24, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We left the campsite at 90 for the final 60k of the trip. More canals, rivers and fields guided us through Noord Holland. Its quite amazing how in the Netherlands they manage to get the cyclists through busy intersections with so much ease and smoothness without having to work out where to go or the search for the next bit of cycle path. The new cycle highways are most impressive, the whole width of the road is coloured red as a cycle path but cars are allowed as 'guests' and have to proceed very carefully and generally do so! Try that in the UK! Alkmaar was our lunch stop and we tried working out the Latin phrase on the impressive 'Waag' building where on Fridays the cheeses are weighed and sold.
"SPQA RESTITVIT VIRTVS ABLATAE JVRA BILANCIS", SPQA by virtue of its courage and strength, restored the rights to the balance to the people and government of Alkmaar." We arrived at our car in good time and rewarded ourselves with an icecream and a swim in the Lake! Our holiday was finished with a meal on the beach near Hoek van Holland. 🇳🇱
