    Brandlehow swim

    July 18, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Great swim in Derwent Water on one of the hottest days of the year! 27c at 12:00 hrs (inside). Wonderfully quiet but cool. Water temperature was ok for 25 min, refreshing. Watch old lady with her walking stick submerge herself fully clothed! Plenty of canoes and SUP's calling into the bay. People watching and ducks cleaning themselves.Read more

  • River swim near Bowder Stone

    July 19, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Left at 12.00 with 28c inside. River at Borrowdale had been taken over my some loud blaspheming young men with a radio. Hence didn't stay long and went back to Myrtle Bay where things were a lot more quiet and tranquil! Another 1k swim too, very cool! Temperature getting there was 35c!Read more

  • Wythop Moss

    July 21, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Trip of the 'Swaites'! First to Braithwaite, then Thornthwaite and Lothwaite, Burthwaite and finally a picnic by the river at Southwaite! We did some hunter gathering at the Lorton Village Shop of ice cream and cakes. Ice cream didn't get very far of course but we did attempt to eat the cakes at Crummock Water The presence of a pack of primates with loud music and smokey BBQ stopped us in our tracks and we retreated! A bench near the top of Whinlatter became a much better choice!Read more

  • Keswick parkrun

    July 23, 2022 in England ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

In week 7 run 3 Sally persuaded me to do the Keswick parkrun. I was only going to run 25 minutes of it but ended up doing the 5km in 28 min 24 sec. Not a bad result of the couch to 5km program. Thanks Jo Whiley for encouraging me!Read more

  • Travel to Isle of Man

    July 24, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Left Portinscale just before 9.00 to arrive in Warton at 10.00 very light traffic and the rain stopped too! Temperatures rose from 18°C to 24°C as well! Coffee stop in Morecombe Bay and easy cycle into the port. No 6 hour queues here!
After a 4 hour sailing we arrived at Douglas. Last hour was a bit bumpy but the cabin with shower, TV and hot drinks made it quite comfortable! 5km cycle from Douglas to the campsite, we were the only ones!

  • Sartfell and Point of Ayre

    July 26, 2022 in Isle of Man ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Day 3 - Mountains, seals and light houses. From 12°C to 20°C pluses plenty of wind. The trip up the mountain offered beautiful views but quickly became very chilly with a quick decent into Kirk Michael where there was a nice coffee shop with great overpriced cakes. Onto the most northerly point of the island to see the lighthouses, seals and Artic Terns nesting (didn't see any!). Not many places where you can see England, Scotland and Ireland all at the same time!Read more

  • Peel and Port Erin

    July 27, 2022 in Isle of Man ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Day 4. Pretty costal bike ride to Peel. Finding the BCQ was rather fraught with difficulties and we ended up doing an extra 5km. Cheese and potato pie in Peel, like school dinners but very nourishing for the next few big hills! Port Erin and the campsite lay below as does another Manx railway, driven by steam this time. Fish and chips and a coastal walk finished off the day nicely!Read more

  • Calf of man, Port St Mary and Castletown

    July 28, 2022 in Isle of Man ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

After a wet night we left the tent on site and pedalled up to the Calf of Mann and watched the seals. The tide was running through at rather a speed! Many ships ran aground here including the brig 'Lily' that crashed in 1852 with a cargo of gunpowder, it did later exploded with another 29 men lost their lives! On the way back we called in at Cregneash, an old crofter village and cafe where we had a slice of Bonnag, the local spicy fruit cake, ideal cyclist food! Scarlets nature reserve and St Michael's Chapel followed before we made our way to Douglas via Marine Drive, rather a beautiful way of decending into the town!Read more

  • Isle of Man back to Heyesham and Wrexham

    July 29, 2022 in Isle of Man ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Early start after a disturbed night, having been woken up by a horse box at 11.00 hrs. Quick 1/2 hr descent into Douglas got us to the terminal in plenty of time to soak up the early morning sun on the 19th century promenade. Smooth and sunny cruise across the Irish Sea. Along from Heyesham to Morecombe in the sun only to find out the M6 is shut near J33, just where we needed to go! Long detour around Lancashire. Lovely green camping place called 'Wild Cherry' with own field and fireplace. Good end of the day!Read more

  • Bonus day in Denbighshire

    July 30, 2022 in Wales ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Stopover at the Cherry Orchard in Denbighshire. A green camping site with lovely spacious pitches with its own picnic table and shelter. A wet start to our ride to Llangollen but dryer along the canal on the way back. Amazing walk over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, 300m long, 38 m high and 28 pillars! Very narrow towpath with a high drop!Read more
