    Tampere

    July 5 in Finland ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

    Hello!
    We arrived in Finland yesterday (Helsinki Airport) and took a train to Tampere, where we met up with two friends today.
    We walked around the city a little, checked out a video games exhibition in a museum and spent time in a Barcade.

    Tomorrow, we will continue to Savonlinna, a small town in southeast Finland with many lakes around.

    Weather has been mixed so far. It's been raining a lot but so far, this has been okay because we came prepared (with rain coats ;))    Read more

    Savonlinna Boat Tour

    July 6 in Finland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    After leaving Tampere, we took some trains (and a replacement bus) to Savonlinna, a small town/city located right in the middle of Finlands biggest lakes. Weather was good when we arrived so we decided to go on a boat tour around the lakes.

    Halfway through, it started to rain heavily. What a vibe!

    On return, we walked around in the rain a little before returning to our hotel.    Read more

    Olavinlinna & Riihisaari

    Our second day in Savonlinna was entirely for some historical castle and museum visits!

    Walk around Helsinki

    July 8 in Finland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    Another long train ride later we arrived in the center of Finlands capitol city, Helsinki.

    We decided to check into our hotel first before taking a long walk around the nearby park, where we found a funny thing™, the sibelius monument.

    Afterwards, we headed back to our hotel, preparing for a full day in the city tomorrow.    Read more

    Suomenlinna

    July 9 in Finland ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

    Early in the morning, we took the ferry (which was conveniently included in our HSL public transit day ticket) to the Fortress Island Suomenlinna.

    After arriving, we ate some cake in a Café and then walked across the island and checked out the historical buildings.

    The whole trip took us two hours, then we headed back to the mainland.    Read more

    Helsinki City Center

    Continuing through Helsinki, we checked out some of the "must see" spots, including some pretty buildings.
    Mioh also wanted to go into a store called "Music Hunter" and they got two CDs out of it.

    We took a bus to Porvoo, a small town just an hour drive away from Helsinki, with one of the most iconic Old Cities in Finland. We only had around 90 minutes here before our bus ride back, but we used it to check out the river area and the old abandoned railway station.Read more

    Tallinn City Tour (Part 1)

    July 10 in Estonia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    We left Finland today and continued on the ferry to Estonia, where we arrived in Tallinn.

    Together with a friend, we spent the day in the city, learned a lot about the history of this place and visited a museum, including a walk through the old city defense wall.

    Estonia greeted us with perfect weather: Sunny and 20°C.

    It was finally time for some nature, after spending so many days in cities.

    When doing some research for this vacation, we realized there's an island just 30 minutes away by ferry from Tallinn, so we planned a full day for hiking across that island today.

    We arrived at around 10:30 in the morning and arrived back at the dock by around 15:30.
    After eating some food at the Café, we waited for a while and then took the ferry back at 18:30.

    The island is very pretty, very silent, clean and there were not many other people around. There's also a lot to see, since it used to be a military station. The landscape is very varied too even though the island isn't big. If you're ever in Tallinn and have a day to spare, this island is a clear recommendation.    Read more

    Train to Rīga

    July 12 in Estonia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

    Today was a travel day. We left Tallinn with a train at 10:51 to Rīga. More precisely, the train was said to go to Vilnius, but it actually stopped at the Estonian/Latvian border where we had to switch trains.

    Continuing on the Latvian side of things, we arrived in Rīga six hours later, at around 16:50.
    Starting tomorrow, we have three days here and will make good use of them.

    Rīga Old City

    July 13 in Latvia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    It is Rīga time. And oh boi, this city is pretty. There is so much to see! We started by walking to the river and then around in the old city area. So here is the first half of our day in pictures!

    Ķemeri National Park

    July 14 in Latvia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Today, we wanted to have another nature day. And that is what we got.

    We left our Rīga Hotel by 08:00 in order to get a train running hourly from Rīga directly to Ķemeri. From there, it is just about half an hour to get to the parking lot where the park starts.

    We read online that there will be many mosquitoes on our way so we were mentally prepared for those. What we didn't expect was the swarm of horseflies waiting for us in the shades of the trees. At some point, we had at least 10 of them following us while we tried to reach the parking lot area.

    Luckily, there was a store at that parking lot, where we were able to get Anti-Insect Spray. Smelling like something that mosquitoes and horseflies dislike, we started our actual adventure to the Swamps/Wetlands, more precised it was a Raised Bog.

    Following a narrow wooden log path we made our way to a lookout tower with many small lakes around. What a view!
    During our time in the actual park, we had basically no issues with insects bothering us. It was super cool and we had a great time there.

    Once we walked around for about four hours, we arrived back at the parking lot and mentally prepared for the short distance back to the train station. We put on all the hoodies, gloves and layers we had with us and even though we were sweating like crazy and still got followed by at least 10 horseflies, we made it back alive and without any actual attacks to the train to Rīga.

    What a day. I would recommend the park itself, but probably access it with a car directly to the entrance/parking lot, because otherwise you'll have a hard time running away from the flying enemies.    Read more

    Vecāķi Beach Day

    July 15 in Latvia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Only 30 minutes away by train from Rīga is Vecāķi, a small town right next to the beach. We decided to have a beach day today so there's not much to say other than that we enjoyed it.

    Rīgas Centrāltirgus & Latvijas Zinātņu akadēmija

    July 16 in Latvia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    On our last day in Rīga, we had to check out at our hotel before noon but still had around 4-5 hours to spare before our train to Vilnius.
    So we decided to check out the area southeast to the central station.

    First, we visited the Rīga Market Halls. There were five of them, although only three were open. There was also a lot of outside area with more things to look at and potentially buy.

    We didn't buy something but it was hard to resist the urge when walking around so much good smelling food... and hats.

    Afterwards, we continued to a building that we had already seen from our hotel room for a while and wondered what it might be. Turns out, it was the Latvian Science Academy, including a panorama platform for visitors!    Read more

    Vilnius

    July 17 in Lithuania ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

    Yesterday evening, we finally arrived in the last country of our trip: Lithuania!

    Today, we spent all of our time in its capitol, Vilnius. We walked through the old part of the city, checked out the town hall and the big cathedral.

    A very cool moment was the Portal at the town hall, which shows other cities with those portals and you can then wave at people from all around the world.

    Trakai

    July 18 in Lithuania ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    Today is the last full day of our trip, so we jumped onto another train and went half an hour away from Vilnius to the city of Trakai, which is located between several lakes.

    We walked around the water a little until we reached Trakai Castle, the highlight and tourist attraction of this place.
    Since it's 14€ per adult to enter, we decided to skip it and just walk around the building instead.

    A last, very good day on this vacation and our last activity in the Baltic States before we will go to the airport tomorrow and fly back home.
