    Yogyakarta

    July 18, 2018 in Indonesia

The first stop on Valerie’s and my trip this year was Yogyakarta. We almost missed the flight as we headed to the wrong airport. I'd never given even considered that we were leaving from the small domestic airport in the south of Jakarta, but when we arrived at Soekarno-Hatta that's what we were told. We hopped in a taxi and honestly, I didn't think we'd arrive on time. But we did :-) After a one-hour-flight, we arrived in Yogya. Since I already knew the city, we did not do too much sightseeing but enjoyed strolling through the city instead. We did, however, visit the beautiful Tamansari – the so-called water palace.Read more

  • Gunung Bromo

    July 21, 2018 in Indonesia

We took the train from Yogya to Malang, where a driver was waiting for us to take us to our homestay close to Bromo. The train ride was relaxing, however the landscape was less impressive than on the way from Probolinggo to Banyuwangi (see next foot print).
On our first day at Bromo, we mainly relaxed and later got a tour by our wonderful host Aziz, who first took us to a place above Bromo to try to catch a glimpse of it. However, due to the many clouds we didn’t really see much. Later that day, Aziz took us on a stroll through the kampung behind his house where we met some locals and where able to see how they live.

  • Train ride across Java

    July 22, 2018 in Indonesia

On this journey, we took the train three times: From Yogya to Malang, from Probolinggo to Kalibaru and from Kalibaru to Banyuwangi. Especially the last two parts were really pleasant, since you could see lots of rice fields and palm trees from the train.
In stayed overnight in Kalibaru, where we stayed in a pretty little hotel which had a very mysterious atmosphere due to the clouds as you'll see in the pictures.

  • Lovina

    July 23, 2018 in Indonesia

After about two hours of driving we arrived at our new home in Lovina. Since the beach front villas were already booked out we stayed in a room in the main building, but were still able to enjoy the facilities as well as the beach. It's a really gorgeous place, and I'll definately go back there some time. The place offers reasonable food and there are some more fancy restaurants that serve delicious cocktails further down the beach. Lovina is much more quiet than the south of Bali and is definately worth a visit if you are looking for a peaceful stay at the beach. We stayed there for three nights.Read more

  • Brahna Vihara Arama

    July 26, 2018 in Indonesia

On our way from Lovina to Central Bali we first stopped at the only Buddhist temple of the island - Brahna Vihara Arama. It is a modern and quite new temple which is why it looks quite artificial, but it's nevertheless worth a visit if you're in the area.Read more

  • Munduk

    July 26, 2018 in Indonesia

  • Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

    July 26, 2018 in Indonesia

From Muduk we went to Bratan lake to visit the famous Pura Ulun Danu Bratan during sun set. Despite the many tourists it was a very peaceful place. Afterwards our driver took us to our homestay (Pondok Nyoman) not far from the lake where we woke up to a beautiful view of the surroundings. We then went to the stunning Jatiluwih rice terraces where we went for a long walk to enjoy the scenery.Read more

From Jatiluwih we went to two different temples before we arrived in Ubud. • Discovering Ubud

    July 28, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

On our first day in Ubud, we mainly strolled through the cafés, boutiques and restaurants. I also relaxed some time at the pool at Ketut's place while Valerie visited the temples. We had lunch at the pobular Bira Bira and treated ourselves to Cocktails later during happy hour.Read more

  • Discovering the surroundings of Ubud

    July 30, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

On the morning of the 29th of July, we were woken up by the first of the two strong earthquakes that shook Lombok. Even though we were hundreads of kilometers away, we could still feel it quit strongly. It happened at about 7 am and it took us some time to realize what had just happend. The first thought I had was that Gunung Agung had erupted again but social media quickly told us what had happened. We then cancelled our reservation in Nusa Lembongan (also due to the high waves that made it difficult to cross the see) and decided to go to Canggu instead. We also stayed one night longer than planned in Ubud. We went on a bike tour around Ubud and had more delicious vegan food at Sayuri Healing Food Café and the Zest.Read more

  • Arriving in Canggu

    July 31, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

On the 31st of July, we took the mini bus from Ubud to Canggu - not a very smart decision as it turned out. It was late, slow and we thus arrived about 2 or 3 hours later than expected. However, Canggu itself war definately worth it. Soon this place will be much more developped and crowded, but for now, it is still kind of relaxed and you can get great food and decent cocktails for a good price. We really enjoyed our time there.Read more

  • Pura Tannah Lot

    August 3, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

On our last day in Canggu we took a gojek to Pura Tannah Lot where we stayed a few hours. Getting back was much more difficult as the Bali taxi mafia wouldn't let us order a grab... We were being followed which was really scary. In the end we managed to find another gojek driver who took us back to our hotel in Canggu for double the price (since he took both of us at the same time). Unfortunately, we lost a lot of time trying not to give in.. in the end it would have probably made more sense to have paid the overpriced taxi fare.Read more

  • Seminyak

    August 4, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

On our last day before heading back to Jakarta/Germany, we went to spend one night in Seminyak. It is a very touristy place, but it's nice if you want to do some shopping for clothing and souvenirs. And you can get delicious food at Nalu Bows, Seminyak. Our little hotel was also a great discovery, I'll definately book it again in the future.Read more

  • La Plancha, Seminyak

    August 4, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Last but not least we went to the beach for a short last swim and a stroll along the emblematic beach front bars and restaurants. Despite the many tourists, I really enjoyed this place. The colourful bars are a pleasant sight, the food is good but pricy and you can get the best strawberry margarithas of Bali at La Plancha tapas bar. Not to be missed!Read more
