I decided to spend the first of three long weekends on Pulau Belitung, a relatively small island between Jakarta and Singapore. This is a place you don't find in German guide books (haven't checked the Lonely Planet) and that's probably one reason why there are almost only Indonesian tourists. Most people on the island don't speak English and so I got to practise speaking bahasa indonesia a lot which was great. I had found a wonderful little homestay-like resort with a few cottages on a small but beautiful beach. Since I was the only person staying for all three nights I basically had the place to myself. Pulau Belitung, Day 2 - Eye Candy

On my second day, I woke up to sunshine and decided to rent a scooter to explore at least parts of the island. Went to the two main beaches, had lunch, had to escape the rain, saw some really nice spots, chattet with a lot of locals and took hundreads of photos of fishing boats.Read more

More impressions of this gorgeous island ... I even ended up finding a beach bar where I had a Mocktail before heading back on my scooter (and almost got lost)

Pulau Belitung - Island hobbing (1)

On day three I did an island hobbing trip with my friend Birte and her husband (who happens to be my boss...). We had a really awesome day snorkeling, enjoying the beautiful clear water ( I've never seen such clear water - not even in Sulawesi) and eating. Had to escape from another downpour which got wet almost all our stuff and we did see some interesting animals as you will see in the sceond post for this day....Read more

Island Hobbing and Snorkeling (2)

On the island with the lighthouse we saw a few dragon-like creatures, some of them pretty big. Later on we discovered a cute little turtoise who seemed to be quite relaxed (but probaly wasn't). We had a sundowner at the Crabby Hut Beach Bar before we headed back to our respective accomodation.Read more

Before heading of to the airport I went for a stroll through the fishing village close to my accomodation. I was welcomed with a lot of smiles and curious questions especially about the fact that I was "sendiri" - on my own. But had I not been on my own, I would have proabably never had the chance to watch all these people carry out their jobs: fishing, getting the fish out of the boat, drying the fish and putting it into bags. By the way, all these people in the pictures asked to be in my photos. Indonesians love that. And since everybody has twitter, istragram and facebook, it's absolutely normal for them that their photos will be spread. That's a big part of the culture and mentality here whatever one might think of that.Read more

I wish I could have stayed longer, but I had to head back to Jakarta. i was on the last plane to leave the airport with only an hour of delay (which is not bad for Indonesian standards).
