  • Down from Pordoi Pass

    September 21, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

This side of the mountain is full of very steep ski slopes. We watch a gondola high on the mountain peak and find a tiny patch of Edelweiss. Despite the narrow road, the switchbacks and the death-defying drop-offs from the road, there are only these small concrete plugs by the side of the road to stoop any vehicle going over the edge..Read more

  • Bolzano

    September 21, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Our lunch stop after a very winding but beautiful mountain day in the Dolomites. Bolzano is a bustling city with a mix of old and new. The city square is called Piazza Walther; there's a market in another piazza; shopping streets are pedestrian but because there is a lot of rain here, there are undercover colonnades to protect shoppers.Read more

  • Otzi at the Archaeological Museum

    September 21, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The big drawcard for us is the museum that houses the story of Otzi, the mummified Iceman who was found by 2 hikers in 1991. He was a well-preserved specimen of the late Stone Age. He had been deep-frozen in ice and snow more than 5,300 years ago. We viewed him through a window in his refrigerated cell. Several items of his clothing and personal hunting items were also found nearby. No photos are allowed at all - so these came from the brochure.Read more

  • Venosta Valley

    September 22, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Bolzano, Merano and the Venosta Valley are the centre for the apple growing industry in Italy. One in 3 apples grown in Italy comes from this valley. We travel for almost an hour through apple orchards. High on the steep hills are grape vines. The area is famous for its Riesling and Traminer varieties. It's the start of the picking season and people are hard at work in the orchards, the trees laden with fruit. The big green packing boxes are spread through the orchards. We follow a small truck taking filled boxes into a village. We pass by a roundabout where trees have been topiarised into cyclists. This area is an elite cycling training ground. The Stelvio is nearby and it is often used in the Giro & the Tour de France routes.Read more

  • Glorenza - a fortified trading centre

    September 22, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

The smallest town in South Tyrol, Glorenza, has an eventful history and an interesting past as a late medieval trading centre. The town walls, still fully preserved, lend the little town a unique character with their imposing gates and fortified towers. Glorenza is first mentioned in 1163 but was originally a Roman settlement. It became a free city that was chartered in 1304. The city walls were built in the 16th century and are 10m high with town gates. The current wall protects the old town from regular flooding from the nearby small river. A tide mark about 2 m up the wall marks the highest flood level.Read more

  • Glorenza - Inside the Walls

    September 22, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

The 14th century church still has the original frescoes which are very bright. The city square is a vibrant hub of activity. Today it is filled with cyclists taking a break in their tour. The other church is just outside the city walls and has the most beautifully tended graveyard in the grounds.Read more

  • Parc Naziunal Svizzer

    September 22, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

This adjoining park is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. We follow a very deep gorge all the way to St Moritz. Sun denied us the ability to take photos of this gorge from the bus. We have followed the Inn River which continues downstream to Innsbruck and further along.Read more

  • St Moritz

    September 22, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Playground of the rich and famous, St Moritz is one of the most well-known ski resorts in Switzerland. It has 3 Five Star hotels which regularly host royalty and celebrities. The town is built on the steep sides of the mountain beside a small lake that freezes over in winter. It is surrounded by mountains. We do an orientation walk around the town. In the middle of town is a large herd of grazing sheep, many of whom have bells around their necks. At the carpark, we learn that there are special car parking spaces for women (Frauen) that are slightly bigger than a normal space (go figure that one!).Read more

  • Piz Corvatsch

    September 23, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Today was a free day in St Moritz. We had been given a travel card for our stay. It gave us unlimited access to the buses, cable cars, gondolas and funicular. This was amazing - so today we climbed 2 mountains and walked around the entire lake at St Moritz, Beautiful weather but quite windy on the high peaks, particularly this afternoon. We took the gondola (with a change midway) to 3,303m at the top station on the Corvarsch.Read more

At the Corvatsch Bergstation, you can see all the surrounding mountains - almost all over 3,500m high and some 4,000+m. Deep below in the valley we can see all 3 glacial lakes of the St Moritz area as well as 8 small glaciers. It's so clear, we can make out the Matterhorn on the other side of the Swiss Alps.Read more

  • A Walk Around St Moritz See

    September 23, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

Hiking the entire circumference of the lake (about 4km) took us 1hr and 20mins. We had several stops along the way to admire the views and take photos. It's a flat walk and there's lots of families out having picnics. It's Sunday and no shops or businesses are open.Read more

  • The Funicular to Corviglia

    September 23, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Walking up the steep roads of the town to the funicular, we ride it to Corviglia at 2,486m. A huge amount of ski runs here but today it's the mountain bikers who rule the slopes. It's very cold and windy here. After a change of funicular, we decide not to ride the gondola higher because of the cold wind....so back down we go and walk back to the hotel.Read more

  • Bernina Express

    September 24, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Travelled this famous train route from St Moritz to Tirano in Italy. The high peaks were around us as the train wound its way down through the mountains. There were several stops along the way. The rugged terrain took us close to Alp Glum and it’s glaciers. We pass over and under a semi-circular viaduct. The journey takes a little over 2 hours.Read more

  • Adda and Po Valleys, Lombardy

    September 24, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The Po River is the longest in Italy, starting in these mountains and draining into the sea near Venice. It’s headwaters are joined by smaller rivers, like the Adda. The area is a fertile foodbowl for northern Italy. Grapevines layer the hillsides. The area seems prone to flooding as there is a wide flood plain and many homes and roads are raised. Villages dot the steep hillsides.Read more
