Our hovercat ferry arriving. The public transit in Brisbane is amazingly efficient, including the bus network, which has it's own highways in places.

Monday was a nice quiet day with a trip to see a movie and then to meet up with my nephew and his wife for dinner at a lovely Italian restaurant.

Tuesday, I took a train down to Nerang, which is near the border with NSW. My great nephew picked me up from the station and we went sightseeing to Currumbin, on the Gold Coast.

In the parking lot of the surf lifesaving club, you could rent a surfboard. The lookout is atop Elephant Rock, which is right next to the club building,

Food at surf lifesaving clubs is legendary for the amount, the low price, and its deliciousness. Strictly speaking, you need to be signed into the restaurant and bar by a club member, but "guest" status is available even if you don't know a club member.

We had originally planned to go for a hike in a rainforest reserve on Mt Glorious, but it turned out to be closed for track maintenance. So we had a nice lunch in the local cafe. The road up to MtLeggi altro

We were able to go to the lookout. That large body of water in the distance is the reservoir from which Brisbane's drinking water comes. A few years ago, during a prolonged heavy rainfall event, the dam was opened because of fears of it overflowing. It sent so much water down the Brisbane river that it caused a very bad flood.

A few of the blokes at the cafe, where their motorcycle club had stopped for lunch. When we first drove by on our way up to the lookout, there were a lot more bikes and riders--including a whole posse of motorcycle cops enjoying an outing!

The cafe sponsors a lot of motorcycle events and has this beautiful hog on display. Buddha is its security guard.
Brisbane Botanic Gardens - Mt Coot-tha

Native turkeys have tails that are perpendicular instead of horizontal. Also, their wattles pretend to be lei!

Num! Num! Iced coffee as it should be--poured over ice cream and with freshly whipped cream on top. The friends I was staying with joined us for lunch, as well. That's Pete's fair dinkum Aussie Akubra hat behind the baseball cap my great-nephew gave me!

From the cafe, we walked back to catch the Bulimba ferry into the city. On the way, we passed the local cricket ground, which is edged by pandanus trees. The aerial roots have been protected with PVC tubing, which the community has then decorated.
