    Decided I'd take a quick trip to Oakland to see old workmates and friends I hadn't seen since I moved to Hawai'i in 2017. It would be a chance to test the waters for longer distance flights to see family.

    I was SOOO nervous about flying, I got cramps in the morning and wondered if I should see a doctor and get a medical certificate so I could claim the trip back on my travel insurance. LOL.

    Part of my anxiety was to do with the photos of long lines for the TSA checks in Kahului, but all was well. Except that the full-body scanner misread my body powder as explosives and I had to have a patdown and palm scan to check I wasn't wearing a bomb. TSA no longer expects you to take everything out of your bag for scanning, but you do still have to take your shoes off unless you're over 75.

    Excellent flight on Hawaiian Airlines and we arrived in time for me to grab a cup of hot chocolate from Oaklandish's airport cafe just before it closed. All good!!    Read more

    Had a great sleep at the Econolodge near OAK, then took bus and BART to Berkeley. Had some delicious pizza from Sliver and iced coffee from the cart in the newly updated Downtown Berkeley Plaza. Then hopped the Perimeter line to my old stomping grounds at EECS Cory and Soda Halls.

    Nearly everybody was working from home, so I only got to see one former workmate! It was the week before classes started and I was a bit surprised there weren't more students around checking out the campus. Met up with the person who first employed me at UCB and her husband and did a bit of wandering with them. Then took public transit back to the motel, getting a delicious roasted veggie salad from Market Hall in Rockridge on the way.    Read more

    Took public transit from Lafayette to Alameda Landing via the Fruitvale transit center to meet up with friends. Had a lovely visit with them and was driven back to the motel.

    The sailing ship was abandoned at the Landing and a search for the owner so that he could be charged docking fees proved fruitless. The Port of Oakland left it there anyway, as it's quite a tourist attraction.Read more

    I had to use a library PC for my work, and went to the Cesar Chavez branch of Oakland Public Library, in Fruitvale. I used to live there in 2004-5 and really love the area.

    Another former workmate picked me up from Rockridge BART and we went for dinner at an Italian restaurant in Montclair. Then she dropped me off at the motel for my final night's sleep before the trip back to Moloka'i.Read more

    The free shuttle from the motel left at 7am and I had no problems--apart from once again being suspected of being a bomber--going through check-in and TSA. Another good flight with good service back to Kahului Airport on Maui, where I had a four-hour wait until my Mokulele island-hopper flight back to Moloka'i.

    When I planned the trip, I thought I would use those four hours to take a quick trip to the QKC shopping center, but I was entirely pooped out by my whirlwind trip and just hung out in the commuter terminal.

    Things I learned from my test flight: I should probably break up my flying time into 5-hour segments, as that seemed about right comfort-wise. I shouldn't go rushing about when I get to my destination. LOL.    Read more
