The only place with no goulash

    29 décembre 2019, Hongrie ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

We got off to a little bit of a bumpy start with Budapest, one of those days where nothing goes right. I was excited for goulash, managed to go to the one place in the city probably that had run out, with the slowest service in the world, etc etc. But we had a Danube cruise to look forward to in the afternoon!En savoir plus

    1Me in the pool

    Sunrise Szechenyi

    30 décembre 2019, Hongrie ⋅ ☀️ -3 °C

A strategically early start this morning, arriving at Szechenyi baths at 7am in a bid to outrun the bulk of other tourists - it worked! The baths are the biggest in the city and very much plural - lots of different temperatures you're meant to cycle through.

When you go in, you get changed in a little cabin with a clever locking system so it can be used from both ends - it has two doors, you walk in one end, flip a plank over to jam both, and when you're ready, walk out the other. You put your stuff in a locker then have a shower, and go explore.

We gunned it for the two outdoor pools as we knew they'd be most likely to fill up later, and did our time in the indoor ones (full of locals, mainly old fat men) towards the end of our two hour stay.

No pictures of inside the pools because we left our phones in the lockers but it was a new experience for sure, particularly being in a steamy 38 degree pool in - 2 outside, walking on ice to get in. Loved it.

We got to the market hall with about half an hour to go before closing but it was still pretty busy! Fake it til you pee

    1 janvier 2020, Hongrie ⋅ 🌙 1 °C

We stood in the street for midnight on NYE, to be specific, outside a concert hall (pictured in daylight in the last shot).

The Hungarian approach to celebrating this seems to be either go and see a classical concert or sell any drunk bastard a truckload of fireworks and let them set them off, willy nilly, in the street, and bugger safety. Very entertaining but I'm sure someone has lost a finger.

At 12 the concert hall had intermission so the very fancy attendees could stream outside, champagne in hand, to watch the festivities. I took the opportunity to try to blend in and sneak inside to use the loo and have a poke around. Some ladies spoke quite a lot of friendly Hungarian to me in the toilet queue which I did my best to respond to confidently to so as not to blow my cover. Some well placed eyebrow raising and sympathetic nods got me through. I got asked to take my seat in the concert hall but decided not to push my luck. Success.

Lou and I stayed up all night with the aim to roll straight through to the baths at 6am, but just as we were about to leave (after 3 hours of dancing in the kitchen to stay awake, and everyone else dropping off, including Rich at 5am, succumbing to napping on the kitchen floor) a last minute google revealed they only opened at 11am on New Year's Day - foiled!! Buda Chinese

    1 janvier 2020, Hongrie ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

On our last night in Budapest we took a tram over the river to Buda, and had a really delicious meal at a Chinese restaurant - a solid open-on-1-January option. We pigged out on soup, dumplings, Kung Pao chicken and Szechwan beef, with an embarrassing amount of (non-alcoholic) drinks, for about $45 and it was fab. After dinner we met Lou, Seb, et. al. in a Scottish pub for a Guinness and a coffee, then said goodbye as they leave for Vienna in the morning and we're off to Bratislava in the afternoon!En savoir plus

    Fife, Andy and Andy

    3 janvier 2020, Slovaquie ⋅ ☁️ -2 °C

At Baudelaire bar, which, quietly, I chose, and was well timed defrosting, Rich discovered an excellent drink so we've nicked the recipe and intend to recreate it, with raspberry instead of mango as that's what they did now, to his delight.

We've just booked a post-communist tour for tomorrow using the Christmas money Mark gave us (and Jo - I bought a lovely cashmere scarf today, finally, thank you!!), so looking forward to that, hurrah.

Not that we're big on chatting to people at the best of times, but we ended up talking to a gorgeous Irish couple, Andrietta and Andy, at Baudelaire for about an hour, and could have stayed longer - they've got kids about our age and we ended up swapping emails in case we ever visit each other's countries and need some tips.

Was a great tour. Got the rundown of Slovakian history from the occupation in WWII, liberation by the USSR, and the subsequent communist Czechoslovakia up until 1989.

Highlights: the old radio/tv building (upside-down pyramid), memorial to Soviet soldiers that liberated Slovakia (mass graves and monument), and the Iron Curtain and remaining outpost bunkers.

    4 janvier 2020, Slovaquie ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

We joined two other couples for the tour, one from the Gold Coast and one from the Netherlands. Our guide was born in Bratislava in 1990, and says this means when his parents were attending the revolution marches, his mother was pregnant with him, so in a way, he was there too. He was very sweet and the tea spiked with Grand Mariner and soviet wafers he produced at the hill monument was perfectly timed as there's certainly no heater in that van!En savoir plus
