    A few months ago, Donny’s friend mentioned a condo near Tampa, FL was free until January for a great deal.

    So, we figured, why not? And this road trip was born.

    Teton Valley Splendor

    When it comes to natural beauty, it’s usually all about the mountains for me, and the Tetons rank at the top of my favorites.

    The rest of the Teton Valley does not disappoint. We spotted a cow moose (Donny’s first), heard flocks of migrating trumpet swans (my first-so cool!), and generally stood in awe of the beauty here.

    Both towns of Victor & Driggs are charming and surprisingly full of amenities (given their collective population of 4,000)— I’d have to give Driggs the edge for dining options.

    We took advantage of a very chilly day to walk around the private golf course at the Sanctuary in Driggs (formerly Huntsman Springs). The David McLay Kidd design was stunning and a particular highlight for Donny, as he got to meet the famous designer just last week at Gamble Sands. If not for the weather, we were seriously considering sneaking onto the deserted course for a quick nine. Next time...

    For dinner, we enjoyed a lovely charcuterie board and delicious cream of zucchini soup at Forage Bistro & Lounge in Driggs, accompanied by a nice house red and huckleberry spritz (which, if I’m not mistaken was flavored by a huckleberry shrub...swoon).

    While I spent the morning working from the hotel room (today’s remote work flexibility brought to you by Covid), Donny explored more of the valley, snapping some more great landscapes.    Baca lagi

    Beautiful waterfall and a short walk to stretch our legs.

    The nearby road was built in 1938 when the average worker made $5-6 per day. Gibbon Meadow about a mile up the road housed the camp and office, featuring one telephone for both business and personal calls.Baca lagi

    This feels like someone had some public works money left to spend.
    “We should build a museum.”
    “Yeah, but we’re not really famous for anything around here.”
    “Hmmm. Well, what if we put it in an arch over the freeway.”
    “An arch over the freeway?!? I love it. Make sure to put some random sparkly shit on the roof.”

    As we were approaching Lincoln yesterday evening, I mentioned to Caroline that we should go to a steak for dinner. Nebraska being world famous for its beef.
    After a good search on the inter web, it became somewhat evident that Steak is not really a thing in Lincoln. So Sushi it was then. Go figure.Baca lagi

    Nebraska

    Waking up in Lincoln Nebraska, I am looking back at our 550 mile drive yesterday. We departed Cheyenne Wyoming and headed south to Colorado and took a left.
    We had noticed that a wild fire had started to the south the prior evening as we approached Cheyenne. It must have grown sizably over night time because the smoke now filled the sky as we approached Colorado.
    My memories of hearing about Nebraska have been about how flat it is. After about 400 miles I feel I have to disagree. I found the drive pleasant. It may be the time of year but my attention was drawn to the fields and all of the hard working farmers who were busy bringing the harvest season to an end. I love it.
    The one thing that stood out was the visual lack of wildlife sightings. In Wyoming and Colorado the day prior we must have spotted 100+ antelope and lots of deer and even one small but very fast Coyote. (Trying to avoid our truck) But since we entered Nebraska nothing not even roadkill.
    Getting up now to take on another wonderful day. Let’s see where it takes us.    Baca lagi

    Corn

    Now I understand why there is corn in almost every processed food we eat. There have been corn fields since we entered Nebraska and they are still going here in Missouri. We are not talking miles, it’s hundreds of miles of corn fields. Only to be broken up by farm yards and grain silos.
    As we move further into Missouri, there are a lot more deciduous trees of which most are just starting to take on their fall colors.    Baca lagi
