Too Hot 🥵🥵🥵
August 24 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 95 °F
Ugh. I didn't sleep well at all. Despite being exhausted, it took forever for me to actually get to sleep, and I tossed and turned all night. I kept thinking something was crawling on me. It was a rough night.
When my alarm went off at 0500, I had only just dozed off again. Sitting up, this time I knew something was crawling on me. Ants. At least three different kinds and I'm pretty sure a lot of them were fire ants. I don't know why, there wasn't a nest nearby, but right before I went to sleep I did eat a little protein pack, so maybe I had crumbs in my sleeping bag. I know better than to eat where I sleep that's just dumb. What's even dumber is when I went to put my riding suit on, I tossed it down on the ground right where all the ants were. 🤦. I must have gotten them all brushed off because I didn't have problems with them at all today. But I did find a couple on my tank bag which is very strange. The joys of camping 🤣.
Even after dealing with the ants I was still on the road before 0530 trying to get a jump on the heat. I didn't get much jump though because it was already 80°F. By 10 it was 90 and I honestly didn't look again. But when it feels like I'm riding in a hair dryer, I'm pretty sure it's over 100.
Not a lot of sleep and the second day in a row of over 100° = I'm wiped out. I stopped for lunch at a Whataburger so I could go in and cool off, one of my gas stops I went into the beer cooler for a while, and I didn't need to take my shirt off to dunk it in the sink because all of me was completely soaking wet.
Worst of all, I was around Austin during the brutal heat on a work day. Yes, I got my Capitol Building picture, but I paid for it. Because of all the traffic, I could rarely get enough speed to blow the wind up into my riding suit to cool me off. That's why I was soaking wet because I couldn't get any airflow. And sitting on the bike was like harnessing the Sun. A lot of times if I got stuck at a red light just as it turned red, I just turned off the bike and got off of it. It didn't really matter, but I felt like I was doing something helpful.
When I got to New Braunfels Texas this evening around 1800, I stopped at another Whataburger to go inside and cool off. Not just me but both my phones and my GPS. Everything laid on top of a bag of ice did the trick. I stayed there for probably an hour and a half and, because I only did 500 miles today, I abbreviated tomorrow's route down to 800 miles instead of about a 1,000. So I'm still on track to be at The Woodlands HD in Houston Wednesday morning. 👍
If I thought it was hot today, I'm really not going to like tomorrow because I'm headed to Brownsville Texas, which is notoriously hot and even humid because of the Gulf of Mexico. Wish me luck 🤞💪!!
This evening I am probably camping at Gruene HD, and I'm here now, but I got here before the evening lights came on, so I haven't really set up yet. I think I may have to move over to another corner where there's no lights. No big deal.
Oh yeah. One last thing. I stopped by a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's whichever to pick up a camping pillow to replace mine that went flat last night. The cheapest one was $30 😱🤬. Insane.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️
