  • Village of Amityville (yes, that one😱)

    18. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

I had a really good day today. I probably shouldn't have, but I did.

The first thing this morning was the ferry from New London CT to Orient Point NY. I'd taken this ferry line before, and today was no different except the direction. Check out the attached video.

Once I got on Long Island I was just in mission mode. Get to the photo stop then get to the next one. Going through the Hamptons was frustratingly slow, and it took far longer than I anticipated.

I had hoped to be in Manhattan by lunch, but that didn't happen. I wound up in Amityville eating a lobster roll with french fries and a tiny little cup of coleslaw for a mere $50 including gratuity 😱. BTW, the house is still there, but I didn't go see it. It's a private property and its facade has been changed a bit (perhaps disguised 🤔). Anyway, other than traffic and the cost of a lobster roll, I found no horrors in Amityville 😉.

I'm really glad I hit Manhattan on the weekend. The traffic was still bad, but nowhere close to how bad I've seen it before. Getting in and out, I decided to use the toll roads and bridges and tunnels, and I'm sure that helped a lot as well. I actually found myself smiling a lot while riding in the city.

I would really love to live in NYC for one full year, all the seasons. No car, though. I passed one of those parking lots with the vertical car stackers. The monthly rate to stack your car there was over $1,000 😱. I'd have to live in the car if I parked it there 🤣.

I really didn't have any major issues with traffic, but by the time I got down on the Jersey shore, the temperature had dropped from about 70°F to only 50 with fog and the light mist that comes with it. By the time I pulled into the gas stop at 2000, I was really cold and getting wet. When I looked at the radar and the weather forecast, I decided not to camp and grabbed another hotel room for the night.

If I have to start tomorrow in the pouring rain, which it looks like I will have to do, then at least I can get dressed inside before going out into it versus having to dress and pack my camping gear in the rain, which is simply miserable.

So I plan to sleep in a little bit in the morning since sunrise is at 0615. With the couple of hundred miles I did not do today, plus what I'm going to lose tomorrow, I am probably going to have to cut a chunk off my route. But that's okay. Flexibility is the only way to do this 💪.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Half an inch is not 200 miles 🤔

    17. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

As it turns out, the wash tent did a fine job of protecting me from the storm last night. Even though I was sleeping in my riding suit and didn't even think to unlace my boots 🤣, I was out cold until the storm woke me up. A seamed section of the roof gave way presumably under the weight of the water, but it wasn't the part above me and neither me nor my stuff got wet, so I went back to sleep. When my alarm went off at 0400, it was still pouring, so I reset for 0500 and went back to sleep. My brain turned on at 0430, so I got up to find just a little bit of drizzle. It almost completely stopped while I was packing up! But just as I was about to ride off, the rain started again.

It was barely daybreak and I had only made a couple of stops before I looked at the radar again. Just a couple of blocks down the street from Freedom Road Harley was a McDonald's, so I decided to go there and let the storm move on to the West. Once I sat down with some coffee I pulled out my GPS to review my routes to see how long I could let the storm move. Turns out, I don't know how to read a map in the Northeast 🤦.

Being from Texas, it's difficult for me to adjust my internal map proportions meter. You see, on a Texas map, half an inch is about 200 miles. So, when I look at maps of other states, I think half an inch is about 200 miles. But on my maps of Connecticut and Rhode Island, the only two states I'm in today, half an inch is definitely not 200 miles.

The Rhode Island 50 Rides route I was planning to ride and considering not riding if I didn't have enough time? I thought that was about 25 miles. Nope. 6 miles. That's it 🤦. I thought I had 600 miles to ride today. Nope. Make that 250. I only had 250 miles to ride today 🤣.

I didn't wind up leaving McDonald's until after 0830 since I had so much time 🤣. But it was nice and sunny all day after that.

Even after stopping for lunch, adding several AULDR stops, and only going a little bit over the speed limit, I still got to my final stop in New London before 1400 🤣🤣🤣. With so much extra time I decided to get a hotel room so I could work on my routes. And stay out of the rain apparently.

I had a second round of great fortune with the rain today because just as I was covering the bike in the hotel parking lot, the sky opened and a deluge of epic proportions descended. Check out the videos below. Crazy. I am so happy I was not riding in that because that would have sucked big time.

But instead of being soaked, I'm now sitting in a Red Roof Inn less than 2 miles from the ferry terminal 🤣. I finished working on my routes for what I can do right now (what I'm willing to do right now), and Netflix is calling me.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • A Minute in Sleepy Hollow

    16. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

What an exhausting day! I had probably 40 different stops today. I sure am thankful I got my only problem out of the way before 0500 🤦.

I spent last night at Lancaster Harley and was up and rolling by 0430. Just a few hundred yards down the road, I noticed a little strap coming out of the pocket on the right side of my fairing. I immediately gasped, flipped open the pocket lid, and knew that I had really screwed up. I flipped a u-ey and went straight back to the dealership.

While packing, I had placed my second Sena headset on my seat with the two charging cables. I did not put them back in the fairing pocket, which is why the other little cord was dangling out at me 🤦.

Unfortunately, neither the cables nor the headset were in the parking lot where I camped 😨. So, while trying not to panic, I very slowly crept along the two-lane blacktop highway scouring the verge for the headset and cables.

Believe it or not, on my second pass I found one of the cables, then on my third pass I found the headset in the grass. Both were melted from apparently falling off the seat and onto the pipes while I was getting ready to roll. I gave up trying to find the other cable assuming it also would be melted. I went back to the dealership parking lot where I trimmed off a bit of the melted headset so it would fit back on my helmet, and crazily it still worked!!!! $300 disaster avoided. Barely 🤞.

The rest of the day was smooth in comparison. I intentionally routed myself through the village of Sleepy Hollow because it's Sleepy Hollow, you know the headless horseman, Christopher Walken, Johnny Depp and all that 😉. Unfortunately I was pushing myself so hard that I didn't spend the time I wanted to there, so I'll have to go back someday.

I really pushed hard today trying to get as many miles as I could so I'll have more time tomorrow. I have to be through all my stops or cut some of them off because I have a ferry ticket that leaves at 0630 Saturday morning. I don't want to try to ride until midnight tomorrow, so I rode longer than I probably should have tonight.

I've made my bed at Old School Harley where I found a wash tent in the back of the building next door. As I was pulling in, the lightning was fire in the clouds and the thunder was just beginning to growl. I looked at the radar and realized I was going to get hammered probably before I even fell asleep. So I decided to leave all my gear packed except my cot, which I took into the wash tent. I hope it keeps me safe 🤞.

  • Service

    15. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

I'm at Old Glory HD getting a 75,000-mile service today...all day...so I've set up my office to work on my routes 🤣.

"Tell me you ride a lot without telling me you ride a lot":
    - I'm at one dealership getting service and another dealership calls me about my next service 🤣.

I left the dealership just before 1800 and rode until 2300...only getting 200 miles 😔. Traffic out here is the worst. At least in California you can lane split. Out here, you have to sit in the middle of it all 🥵 (or run the tiny shoulder. Not that I would do that. Ever. 😉)

  • On To Connecticut

    12. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

All's well and I'm squiggling my way up to my next state capitol building in Connecticut.

Today was uneventful except for two things.

First, I almost started the day with a really bad taste in my mouth...literally. Note to self: the next time you buy athletes foot cream, make sure it's not in a tube like toothpaste 🤦. Luckily, I caught my mistake just as I was about to squeeze it on to my toothbrush 🤢. Too close though. Waaaay too close. 🤣

Second, as you may know, I use ear plugs, listen to music, and always wear a full-faced modular helmet while I ride. Despite that, as I was entering Guthrie KY on Highway 79, I heard a thud. I knew it wasn't from my bike, so I continued. Seconds later, as I crested the hill, I found out what the thud was: a really bad two-car accident at the crossroads (here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZhuQtHraK3zFtHqo9)
Pickup vs. SUV, the offset front end collision. Both vehicles destroyed. Each driver was an adult male and they were just stumbling out of their cars. Other people who had seen it happen were just getting out of the their cars, too. One was calling 911. One was checking on one driver. I went to the other driver rolling on the ground (in the glass from his windshield) holding his stomach. No blood, no bones sticking out, nothing I and my little first aid kit could do. The lady on with 911 came over to try to tell the dispatcher his symptoms, so I started directing traffic. I kept that up until all the emergency folks arrived and shut down the road completely. The Fire Chief thanked me and I rolled on. Only took about 30 minutes. But I'm really glad I didn't have to see a dead body today. Be safe out there 😘.

  • I Outran the Storm! Phew!!

    9. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Because of the cold last night, I only got a couple of hours of sleep. It was somewhere around 35-40°F this morning, so of course I put on all of my heated gear before I rolled out at around 0630.

My first stop was to scour a field for anything left over from an old abandoned drive-in movie theater. All I found were foundations. 😔

Then it was off to Pueblo and Colorado Springs for the Harley dealerships. I also picked up three Tour of Honor stops for Colorado.

By the time I got to Cheyenne Wells, I was crazy hot, so I stopped at a little park I got out of my heated gear. I forgot the Southwest Colorado is like Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma: flat, hot, and dusty. With so little sleep it was really hard to stay awake this afternoon. I don't think I was actually asleep, but I lost about 50 miles while I was headed to Oklahoma 🫣. More sleep tonight.

For dinner, I had a not so good, $9 hot dog on an oversized bun at one of my Ride to Eat locations, which is sitting like a stone in my gut now 🤢. I'm tucked into the corner of a closed motel in Shamrock, TX. I don't think headlights will hit me, so I should be good. I'm just really glad I'm dry. That was a massive front with horrible winds, and I was blasting down the road despite the speed limit to try to beat it. I did, just, but I did 😁.

    8. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

I'm one quarter of the way to completing my 100,000-mile charity ride!!!

I covered a lot of ground today picking up four tour of honor sites, to ride to eat photos and two dealerships. I also did the 180-mile loop for the New Mexico 50 Rides 1 Nation. I don't recommend doing that at night. My sequence of events was a huge pronghorn antelope, two turkeys, a mule deer, a couple of elk, a herd of elk, a fox, several whitetail deer, and a rabbit. And that's just what I actually saw. I'm sure there was a lot more out there just outside my wonderful lights. Oh yeah, and at 9,820 feet elevation, it was cold 🥶!!!

Despite sleeping like a log last night and oversleeping my alarm by almost an hour this morning, I'm exhausted. See ya.

  • 70K Service & Amanda Kissandhug

    7. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

I was up and gone before 0700--sleeping in, I know 🤣--in an attempt to get to Desert Wind HD in Mesa (Phoenix) by 0930 for my 70,000-mile service. Before I could leave, however, I had to break the ice off of my bike cover 😱. The water on the ground wasn't frozen though, so I felt okay to ride. I definitely put on all my heated gear because the temperature was only and exactly 32°F 😱. 🥶🥶🥶.

I made it by 0930 despite having to battle rush hour work traffic, and they rolled me in straight away. I texted a rider friend to let him know I was in town, and he and his wife picked me up and took me to lunch at Nando's. Yum 🤤🤤🤤.

They dropped me back at the dealership, where the bike was done and waiting for me. I wasn't rushed though because I only had to grab one more ToH mural a few miles away, then go to Scorpion HD in Chandler (also Phoenix) for the final rally dinner.

It was so very nice to see everyone and meet lots of new folks. I even got two more donations and signatures on the bike. One of those sigs is "Amanda Kissandhug," one of Bart Simpson's prank phone calls to Moe. "Amanda Kissandhug. I'm looking for Amanda Kissandhug. Is Amanda Kissandhug here?" 🤣 Why, yes I am looking for a man to kiss and hug, so thanks for that sig, buddy! 🤣🤣

Anyway, it was a very nice day despite the low mileage. I got back on the road at 1900 after the rally wrapped up, but only got an hour and a half away before the yawns hit me hard. Looking at the weather, I decided to splurge on a hotel room instead of battle 40° in the morning. I am crashing as I type, so see you tomorrow.

Oh, I also found out today that I won the 1st quarter Ride to Eat challenge. Where they got my picture I have no idea since it was from over a year ago when I did an Iron Butt SaddleSore BBQ 1000 🤣. But the winner gets some fuel cards, so yay!!

  • A Little Wet

    6. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

My friend and I left her home in Pahrump by 0600 to beat the Vegas rush hour. We blasted US-93 until my Tour of Honor stop at an outdoor adventure place (flag mural).

We then continued onto I-40 until we dropped south on AZ-89 into Prescott (pronounced PRES-cut) where I grabbed another ToH mural (Granite Mountain Hot Shots) and she grabbed another HD photo. We had a nice lunch just off the square, the retraced our path back up to I-40.

We stopped for my third and final mural in Williams, then blasted on east to Grand Canyon HD for her pic. Seeing rain ahead, we prepped to get drenched. Fortunately, we only got a little wet over the 15 miles to our hotel in Flagstaff. After checking in early--we arrived before 1500--I rested and/or dozed for about an hour and a half before we went to the restaurant for dinner, where we met several other folks on the rally and had some really nice fellowship.

    Good day despite the wet.

  • Death Valley 🤎

    5. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

What a nice day. First, when I was at the bike getting ready to leave, I was showing someone my auxiliary lights, which progressed into my 100,000-milencharoty ride and my fundraiser to sign the bike. At least 5 people donated and signed Michael!

Just before 0900, I met up with a rider I met at the Run to Daytona Touring Rally at the end of February. We blasted north to one of my Ride to Eat photo stops, then followed four riders into Death Valley. The riders turned out to the be the rally organizers. We left them when they pulled off to take pictures of the entrance sign.

We needed gas at Furnace Creek, about the center of the park. I was estimating Premium to be over $9 per gallon, but surprisingly, it was under $8. Cool.

    The Borax Museum
    (https://maps.app.goo.gl/G36v5SjyrVoM5dGT6)
had a burger stand outside, so we grabbed some food with a bunch of other folks on the rally, had some nice conversation, then got back into the heat. Fortunately, it was only about 90°F, but that was hot enough for me 🤣!

We took Badwater Road out of the park, stopping at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere. Really cool.

If you haven't been to Death Valley, you should really put it on your list of placea to visit. It's an incredible place. You go from 282 feet below sea level to over 4,000 feet in the snowcapped mountains in mere minutes. The scenery seems to change with every turn, from salt flats to palm trees, washouts to jagged peaks. The heat can be brutal during the day, but the nights can be freezing. If you can find beauty in austerity, then Death Valley is definitely for you!

Now, I'm back at my friend's home in Pahrump getting ready to roll to.Flagstaff in the morning.

    Great day!!!

  • Short Day

    4. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

I left the hotel at a whopping 0830 this morning 😱 to meet a rider at his hotel before 0900. We tore up the I-5 straight to Bakersfield, where I left him at the HD to meet his friend, while I tore off to Lancaster/Palmdale and Antelope Valley HD.

I got to the dealership before 1300 and set up the bike for my fundraiser. $20 to sign the bike! It went really well, and I had some very neat conversations with staff, customers, and rally participants.

We had a very nice pasta dinner, then my friend and I made it to the hotel. After dropping off our stuff, we joined some others at the BJ Brewhouse across the parking lot, and are now going to bed. I don't know why I'm so tired when I was up hours after I usually am when riding 🤣.

Death Valley tomorrow. I hope it's not crazy hot 🤞.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Spring Heat Day 1

    3. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Today, my friend and I left Pahrump and made our way down to Santa Clarita for the Harley Owners Group Spring Heat Touring Rally. Since today is our initial check in and our first dinner, it's considered the first day of the rally. Yay!

Along the way, we grabbed a couple of pictures that I needed and a couple of pictures that she needed, and, even though we stopped for lunch, we still got to the hotel before 1400 😁.

After checking in, we jumped back on the bikes--both white Road Glides--and rode to the HD. About a mile before getting there, we had another white Road Glide come up behind us, linger, then pass. As he passed he gave a little wave, and when I noticed his cut was Boozefighters, I said to myself, "Holy crap, I bet that's Robert Patrick." We followed him into the HD lot, and he pulled straight into the showroom. Sure as 💩, it WAS Robert Patrick 😱! I got to meet him with a hand shake and a quick hug. Pretty cool. Turns out he's one of the HD's owners. There's a memorabilia wall inside and even a Terminator 2 pinball machine 🤣.

Anyway, I had time to catch up with several folks, then we had a nice BBQ dinner. I won a door prize of bike cleaner and a microfiber towel 🤣. Much needed actually 🤣. Maybe I'll give him a quick once-over tomorrow, more than just the windshield and lights. Maybe 😉.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Final Day of Rest

    2. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

Again, no riding today, but an awful lot of hours behind the laptop firing out my next 10,000 miles or so 🤣.

The Harley Owners Group Spring Heat Touring Rally begins tomorrow, so we're leaving early to get down to Santa Clarita before it gets too hot (despite the forecast being 55°F with the wind chill at 42 😱).

It'll be fine. Besides, there's no whining, right?! 🤣

  • Tour of Honor Begins

    1. huhtikuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

As if I'm not stopping for a crap load of photos already, April 1 kicks off the Tour of Honor, so I decided to grab some pics today. I ran down to Las Vegas (again) for several pics, then 75 West to Beatty for 1 x RTE and 1 x TOH pics. It was odd wearing only blue jeans and a T-shirt with my military shirt and leather vest, but it was so much cooler than the riding suit. Don't get me wrong, I love that suit, and I feel protected in it. But it was really nice to ride just in normal clothes.

Now, I'm plugging in to my Garmin Basecamp all the other Tour of Honor locations so I can pick them up as I go along. I'll get as many as I can, but several are in places I've already been, so I may not get those at all. Or maybe I'll make a final sweep at the end of the season to grab those outliers. We'll see.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Taking A Break

    31. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌬 68 °F

I'm so very fortunate to have a wonderful friend who is letting me stay with her for several days in Pahrump. We're on our way to Las Vegas right now to take care of some business. For example, I need to print my rally flags for both the Tour of Honor and the Pacific North West Grand Tour.

I finally got a haircut this morning, which meant I rode a whopping 11 miles 🤣.

Anyway, nothing else to report today 😁.

Hope to see you on the road (but not today!)! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Blasting to Pahrump

    29. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

I was up and gone from Avalanche HD at 0530, knowing I was gaining an hour while I blasted West then South to Vegas. With no pics to take since I'm backtracking from yesterday (minus Moab, although I was tempted to ride UT-128 again!), I made great time. I decided to grab a couple of pics in Las Vegas as I made my way to Pahrump.

My wonderful friend has offered me a place to stay for several days, and I am very happy to take a break for a bit. These past few days have been rough. I'm glad to relax now.

  • UT-128! Ride it!

    28. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

I left Zion at about 0530 and knew I had a big day ahead of me. It got light fairly quickly and I zoomed up I-15 as quick as I safely could. I had a good breakfast at Penny's diner before jumping on I-70 to blast across Utah.

I dropped down into Moab to grab a pic, but also to ride UT-128 north to I-70. It follows the Colorado River through canyons and is one of my favorite rides. Check out the attached video.

Once I hit I-70, I was blasting into Colorado. When I got to the Vail area, I had reached about 10,000 feet, and the temperature had dropped. At a gas stop I put on my full finger gloves, but new I would be dropping down into Denver, so I didn't put anything else on. It was funny to see people skiing on the mountains and then golfing along the interstate 🤣. I guess it's just that time of year.

Denver was, as every large city is, full of traffic. Luckily, today was Saturday, so I'm pretty sure it could have been a lot worse. I got my pictures, including the all-important photo at the state capitol building, and well after dark ended up at Avalanche HD for the night. I've stayed here before with no problem, and there's a Maverick gas station right next door with hot food and coffee in the morning.

I'm beat again and I have a long day tomorrow as well, so ciao.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • 4-State Day

    27. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

I was up and gone by 0500, but quite a few people in the apartments next door beat me 😱.

I made it up to Temecula, then just as the light was beginning to reveal the mountains, I was on my way up the twisties to Idyllwild. It's a cute little alpine village and a great ride to get there.

After coming back down and turning north to I-10, I hit a few dealerships, then decided to skip my friend's house and blast on to Denver. Colorado is my next state 😁.

But first, I spent almost 2 hours at a McDonald's figuring out where I was going to go and having a conference call with my brother. More adulting getting in the way of riding 🤣. I left around 1330 and jumped back on I-10.

It was when I was merging from I-10 to I-15 that I found all the traffic 🤣. I lane split--no joke--for 20 miles. 20. Miles. It was horrible and exhausting. Mostly people pulled aside, but the soccer moms and dualie trucks live in their own worlds and don't pay attention to anything around them. Splitting takes determined concentration on the cars immediately in front of you, the cars and brake lights in front of them, and other bikes coming up from behind you. Plus, you have to anticipate cars changing lanes, which usually happens very fast with no indicator. They usually drift towards the lane they want first, or you can see a slight twist of the front tire. Honestly, I'd much rather not do it, but I'm also not sitting on the bike in the direct afternoon sun in stop and go traffic for 20 miles either. So, I'm exhausted 🫩.

Once in Nevada, I grabbed a couple of AULDR photos and had a gas station sandwich and chips for $20 😱. But gas was about a dollar per gallon cheaper.

Back on I-15, I cut through about 30 miles of Arizona without stopping, and reached Utah (state #4 today) for a photo, bathroom break, and water refill. Now, I'm camped at Zion HD next to a sign that says no overnight parking without a permit 🤣. Oh well. Let's see if anyone comes knocking 🤣.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • 20,000 Miles Done!! 💪

    26. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

I slept in this morning, then got locked out of my room while trying to load the bike, so I didn't get rolling until after 0800 😱.

But maybe that was a good thing because I didn't hit any really bad traffic. Sometimes it was stop and go, but mostly moving. I did a lot of lane splitting, which is more difficult since this bike is half the size of a car 🤣. But for the most part, drivers in the left lane move left to make room for you, including the cop I passed. It's just how it's done here. I always keep an eye flickering to what's behind me, and I move out the way of the other bikes, who are usually skinnier than Michael and who go waaaaay faster than I do.

At noon I found a McDonald's to use their wifi for a "meeting" about my RV campground membership. They swore it wasn't a sales pitch. It was a sales pitch. Only $11,000 more and all of this and that and this could be mine 😱!! 💋 MY 🫏.

Back on the road down to San Diego and another location for the Four Corners and Lap of the 48--San Ysidro--just this side of the border from Tijuana. This time I took my pic at the post office and didn't get caught in the border traffic.

After a couple more pics, I shot 70 miles out I-8 East for one single photo where I thought I also might be able to sleep. Maybe I could've, but the little dirt town was a bit too nothing for me, so I turned around and came back to San Diego. On the way back I rolled 20,000 miles on the year!!!!!

I'm a bit north in San Marcos, tucked away in a busy semi-residenntial area at the HD, but in between a pickup and a trailer with my bike in front of me, so I think I'll be okay. Must leave early though, so time to get some shuteye.

Oh, three dealerships I hit today were permanently closed 😔.

  • Still on US101

    25. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Well, today was the second day of pretty much staying completely on US 101 and just dipping off to grab a photo here and there. I had a huge breakfast in Monterey, partially because I needed a receipt for the lighthouse, which I forgot 🤦, and partially because I was really hungry.

After that lost receipt and hence no date time proof of when I was at the lighthouse, I have decided to forego the IBA lighthouse challenge. Getting a receipt for 120+ lighthouses is going to get expensive. I already have to get a receipt near each Capitol building and near each Lap of the 48 location and near each...everything else I'm trying to do. So lighthouses are out this year.

I got a little more time on PCH 1 to get a photo of a bridge, but then probably made my way back up to Monterey so I could hook over to Salinas and back to the 101.

Then it was a don't-fall-asleep-on-the-bike ride until the turn off to Morro Bay. Morro Bay is a really cool place, but this time I only went halfway to take a photo at the restaurant Halfway Station, which unfortunately wasn't open.

Back to the 101 down to Santa Maria and then Ventura. But I am so far ahead of time, like a week, I need to figure out where I'm going the next few days. So I've stopped at a hotel and cozied up with the laptop and my GPS tonight. I do know tomorrow is going to be a lot of LA traffic, which I'm not looking forward to 😔. Wish me luck 🤞💪.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • CA299, US101, PCH1

    24. maaliskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

I made it across CA-299 just as the sun was coming up and before a lot of the construction turned it into a one-lane road. It was nice and dry, so I had a chance to push the bike a little bit in the turns. I am not comfortable at all. On my other bikes I'm 15 to 20 mph over the yellow recommended speed unless it's 25 or below. On this bike 10 max. Oh well, it is what it is.

After I hit Eureka took a short break by the lighthouse and the Lost Mariner Memorial, I pretty much hugged Highway 101 all the way down to San Fran, just diving in towards the coast to grab a pic.

Going through the Redwoods is always a joy. Please make sure you take the time to park the bike, get off, and walk around to see the magnificence of these trees. A lot of it is just a tourist trap, but pulling into the free gravel parking lot of the Founders Grove Nature Loop Trail and taking a short stroll is a unique experience made up of awe, respect, and quiet that I've never felt anywhere else. I hope you discover that too.

Riding across the Golden Gate Bridge isn't too shabby either 🤣. I gave Lombard Street a pass this time through San Fran because I didn't want to tip over going down 🤣.

I made it all the way down the Pacific Coast Highway 1 from the Bridge to Santa Cruz, then turned back North to San Jose, where I thought I would be sleeping at the dealership. Negative. I forgot that one was in a very busy area, including having a food truck in the parking lot that was packed. So I kept going to Morgan Hill, where I found the dealership had moved half a mile down the road and was now behind locked gates. So I stayed at the old dealership 💪🤣.

    Quite the scenic day.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️
