    Monday is NOT a Hashing Day

    Well, I have had a fantastic time since I arrived in Scotland on 9 August. I met some new friends, reconnected with lost friends, and hung out with my NZ and Oz family. I miss them already.

    Now I'm on the train to Manchester to meet up with another friend and her husband for a couple of nights. Yay!

    Reading and Packing

    Yesterday afternoon, a Hasher I met in 2015 dropped by to say hello. Later, we had a nice evening with another couple, one of whom I also met in 2015, who came over for dinner. It's been so lovely to see my friends.

    Now, I'm reading with Nibbles while Chris is packing for our flight to Germany this evening. On on to German Nash Hash!

    Lunchtime Near Frankfurt

    I have the most amazing friends! After German Nash Hash finished yesterday, I jumped on the train with Jürgen and his wife Jean, who invited me to stay with them until my flight on Wednesday. The train was overloaded, so I had to stand almost the entire three-hour trip, but it was worth it to spend some time with them.

    The three of us once drove from Germany through Austria, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Slovakia on a 12-day hash scouting and Vineyard Hash weekend. We've also been to Greece, Iceland, Poland, and Belgium together, and Jürgen and I traveled to Peru and Chile late last year. (All of these were as part of larger groups except for the drive.) I love these guys!!!

    They're at work today and giving me a beautifully peaceful day to relax and rehydrate after three weeks of hashing. Whew!

    I'm making some lunch now from groceries I picked up at the local market and have just started another book.

    Last Day in Germany

    3 September 2019, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

    I finished my book yesterday before Jürgen and Jean got home from work. We had a nice meal and I called it an early night around 22:00.

    Today, I'm just hanging out with the internet when I can get a signal. I forgot how irritatingly limited connectivity is in small villages. Oh well. I leave tomorrow anyway.

    My First Day in Portugal

    5 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

    I'm enjoying my first full day in Portugal by staying in bed. Nah, I'm really getting up. I've been chatting with friends about further travel plans.

    I went to the Hard Rock Cafe after I got settled in the hostel. Another HRC under my belt. I wound up staying for dinner and watching music videos.

    This hostel is strange, but okay. It's really just a second floor with one room partitioned into six cubes with mattresses in them. A coed bathroom is en suite. Everything is plywood, but it works. There's no air conditioning, but there's a small fan/dehumidifier that I turned up to blow into my cubicle. It works. €90 for 5 nights. It really works.

    Saturday is a Hashing Day!

    7 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    I had a nice breakfast around 08:30 yesterday, then walked up the Avenue da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) to catch a city sightseeing bus. I left on the first bus at 10:00 and spent all day on three routes, the Red, Blue, and Green lines. I jumped off at a Blue stop for lunch in the Praça do Comércio.

    After finishing the Blue route, I took Green to see a couple more things. I did the full route, then I jumped off at Green Stop 3 at the top of Barrio Alto neighborhood overlooking the city. I wanted to and did take the Elvador de Santa Justa (Santa Justa Elevator) down to the part of the city where I'm staying. I got back to the hostel around 18:30, and it was straight to the shower. I had intended to go out for dinner, but after cleaning up and getting in front of the fan, I just couldn't get out of the hostel.

    This morning I grabbed a cod and cheese roll, a specialty of Lisbon and walked around a bit by the river. Then I grabbed a pork bifana (sandwich) with a small beer...all for €3.50! Wow and delicious! I picked up some green grapes at a grocery on the way back to the hostel. Later I am going to the hash. Yay!

    At the Zoo

    Aquarium and Zoo

    8 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

    The hash was terrific yesterday! I met several new friends, one of which told me how easy it is to move to Portugal. Hmm.

    I've spent this morning at the aquarium. The main tank was nice, but a little barren. The Sunfish, Manta Rays, and a massive Sandbar Shark were gorgeous, but the tank just had rocks in it. The rest of the aquarium was okay with some penguins, four funny sea otters, and a tropical rain forest. I only spent an hour there, which says a lot since I can watch animals for hours on end.

    Now I've just arrived at the zoo. I should have come here first, then done the aquarium in the heat of the day. I suspect most of the animals will be sheltering from the sun and heat, but perhaps some will be out. I hope this is an ethical place. I didn't do any research about it. I'll let you know tomorrow.

    All Good Things Must Come to an End

    9 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

    The zoo was great, but as expected, many of the animals were napping in the shade. The dolphin show was cool.

    Unfortunately, today is my last day outside of the United States. I left the US on 10 June 2018 and when I return today 9 September 2019, I will have visited 4 continents (2 new ones for me), spent time in 17 countries (14 new ones for me), hashed in 15 countries (14 new ones for me), and literally flown around the globe.

    A friend asked me what was my favorite part of this trip. Seeing old friends and making new ones was definitely the best. However, what brought tears of joy to my heart was touching rescued elephants in a Thai sanctuary, hearing the piercing calls of gibbon apes from a treehouse in the jungles of Laos, feeling the surge of water from dolphins encircling me at arms length in New Zealand, smelling a glacier in Chile, and seeing prehistoric Komodo dragons in Indonesia. That just scratches the surface of how incredible our world is and the life it fosters. I am so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in just a tiny fraction of it during this trip.

    Thank you to all the beautiful Hashers who opened their homes to me along the way, particularly but not in any particular order Soak&Romney, Xerox&Lexy&Leon, Meat&Easy, Tongue Lasher, Red Light District, Gypsey&Rewd, Automatic Balls&Time For Bed, Tickler, Sniffer Dog, Black Dog&Green Finger, Both Ends&Madam Sin, Jubes (the awesome campervan), and (almost) Mongo.
