My trip began very early and rainy on a Saturday. A almost 4 hour drive to Frankfurt Flughafen with a lot of traffic.
But I had the best co-drivers by my side. My mum and my girlfriend Zoë. It was a very heartbreaking moment seeing her crying right before I passed through the security gates.
It was hard balancing the feelings of excitement about starting this adventure and leaving my love behind.Read more

After an almost 10 hour flight I arrived in Vancouver in the late afternoon. It was perfect weather - 20 degrees and sunny. I was tired and excited at the same time. After 3 years of waiting for this moment because of COVID and other circumstances, it felt kind of surreal being in Vancouver.
In Vancouver it was 5 P.M and in Germany midnight and I was so tired. So, I decided to go to the stadium as it was only a few blocks away. I had been following the MLS in Germany before I flew out so I knew how the season had been going. Straight away I was able to tick one wish off my bucket list on the very first day. Not a bad start, if I do say so myself!

The following days were amazing, however, Vancouver was never going to be my favourite place in the world. It is a beautiful city without a doubt, but the fact that there are so many homeless people living almost side by side with the others is just shocking.
Anyway, I met a lot of nice and friendly people from all over the world. I met another German guy who *is a wheelchair user*. I was super impressed as he told me that he he was also going to be solo-traveling around Canada for one year now. We had a lot of fun and he had some really good stories.

After 5 days in Vancouver I packed my backpack and took a flight to Williams lake which is seemingly close to where I am now - working my first Workaway job in Canada. However, the word 'close' has a complete different meaning in Canada.Read more

Williams Lake

I arrived in Williams Lake at 10 am. My Workaway host had already told me, that I had better bring a book to keep me entertained. Therefore, it was no surprise that I had to wait a long time until a driver picked me up.
It then took another 3.5 hours from Williams Lake to Chilko Lake where I am staying now.

Chilko Lake is a Wildness experience Lodge in the middle of nowhere.
The first day was long and hard, full of waiting and driving. Luckily for me, the guy who picked me up was very cool and chatty. We had conversations about almost everything and straight away it felt like we know each other for years.
Rob was also a Workawayer and little did I know it then, he was to be my future Co-worker at Chilko.

Soon I’ll be moving on to the next stop on my travels and I’m already looking forward to what awaits me next!Read more

Town trip

After 3 weeks off the grid I had my first trip into town today.

It was nice to see something other than just mountains. We needed to get some groceries, as well as many other things as we are preparing to shut down the Chilko lake resort in the next 2 weeks. With a lot of things to do, it was quite a busy day in town. Especially as it took 3.5 hours to drive to town from Chilko Lake so we didn’t have that much time there! All in all, it wasn’t that enjoyable, but it was nice to have a change of scenery anyhow!Read more

Ice Canoeing

The resort has a big pond behind the Mainhouse. A couple of days ago we installed a pump which creates air bubbles under the ice so the fish can survive the cold winter.
However, this morning we saw a big pipe leak in the middle of the pond that had to be fixed.
So we paddled with a metal canoe through the ice and fixed the leak with our bare hands in the ice cold water. Definitely not the best canoe trip I’ve ever had!
At least, it started snowing after our expedition!Read more

Yesterday we went to the lake for a kayak trip. The weather was perfect to catching some rays before the snow is coming. We got pretty close to some grizzlies. Amazing day!

Winter has begun

It’s been snowing quite a bit since last night and it's very cold. We went for a walk today. It was very difficult to walk through 40cm snow, but it was amazing!

Finally, winter has begun!

My time at Chilko Lake is almost over. I’ll leave this Monday and try to reach Calgary within two days.
Yesterday we went kayaking in ice and snow probably for the last time. We saw just a few grizzlies out there. They’re avoiding the cold water too.
However I had a wonderful time here at Chilko Experience. I met a lot of people, I think some of them I can call friends now.Read more

After a two day trip with an one night stop at Kamloops I arrived at Calgary last night.
I travelled 1200 km and been more than 20 hours on the road.
Today I bought a new winter jacket because mine was ripped.
Tomorrow my new host will pick me up in the morning then I’ll stay at a small animal farm 30 min north from Calgary.Read more

New Workaway in Downtown Calgary

Today I just went for a walk through Calgary. It was very cold today (-22 Celsius) so I stopped in downtown for some poutine.

Sporty day

Wow that was a sporty day today. I spent the day today with Brian. I met him one year ago in Mexico so we both were happy to see each other again. He took me to the YMCA which is a sports center in Calgary. So we played table tennis, basketball then we hit the gym, jumped in the pool and finished the day with pickleball. I was very nice to see him again.

In the evening the Workaway host invited me to go to his HEMA (Historical European martial arts) Club.
I never did this kind of sport before but it was just awesome. I learned some self defense tricks and also so things on a sward.

Peter’s Drive-In

Tonight I got some food from Peter’s Drive-In.
It’s an original classic drive-in.
You can get burgers, fries and milkshakes.
Peter’s is in Calgary since 1962 and according to the owner, nothing changed since then.
Peters' Drive-In set a company record by selling 4,000 milkshakes in one day this past summer.Read more

Flight from west to east

Yesterday I flew from Calgary to Toronto. It was about 4 hours flight and it’s nice to be back in Toronto where I was 3 years ago when I first came to Canada.
Back then my very first accommodation with my best friend Melanie was close to Dufferin Station.
Since then we’re doing a little game.
Every time when one of us is in Toronto the one has to send a voice message of the Subway announcement of Dufferin Station.

On Wednesday I went to my very first NBA game. Scotiabank arena is absolutely amazing. Basketball will never be my favorite sport but it was nice to see a NBA game live.

Tonight we had dinner at the CN Tower. It was Zoë‘s birthday present from me. The view was absolutely breathtaking. The food was lovely. A perfect night.

The F•R•I•E•N•D•S Experience

Yesterday Zoë and I went to the friends experience Toronto. It was part of my Christmas gift from her. It was amazing to see a copy of the set and some requisites from the original show. I have so many beautiful memories with this show. It is by far my favourite TV show ever! Well Shameless is probably a pretty close second place 😁.
Later she took me to an very nice restaurant in downtown called Fox on John. There were many vegan and vegetarian options!
