  • Sandfly attack

    7 de dezembro de 2025, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Buller River: We drove up the buller river valley with some gorge like sections. A beautiful scenic road but we had an annoying driver really close behind us.

Rotoroa: The Nelson Lake National Park is a beautiful area with lakes in an amazing mountain setting. The downside of the lake is sandfly paradise. We tried to have lunch near the lake but I couldn't sit still for a second.

Bird on rock: A 4.7 star rating on google...sounds quite nice. Pictures are showing a humanmade flat stone structure in the water (only at hightide). There is a highway between this "historic mound Bird on Rock" and the pedestrian walk. There was no bird on Rock and there are so many places in Nelson, where you can enjoy the landscape with native plants around you. There was even a natural rock on the way to this place, which was more beautiful...

Water Taxi to Anchorage: What we expected was a nice scenic boat ride along the coast to another bay. What we got was a rollercoaster ride with unexpected ups and downs and a really excited woman screaming of joy. We were surprised in the beginning but we had a lot of fun. A stunning coastline with many hidden "golden" beaches.

Te Pukatea Bay: From Anchorage Bay we walked over to Te Pukatea Bay. A lovely little Bay sheltered by the rocky steep shore on both sides. The white sand is mixed with oxidated iron and orthoclase feldspar turning it into a golden coloured heaven.

  • Marlborough Sounds

    9 de dezembro de 2025, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

A mountain range with valleys full of water. Slowly sinking into the sea the Marlborough Sounds show a stunning act of nature.

Cable Bay: a windy road leading to a beautiful bay with an interesting natural connection to an island dividing the bay.

French Pass: an even more windy road that turned to a gravel road at some point. A scenic route following the mountain range far out to a narrow water passage between the mainland and an island in the sounds. The views are breathtaking and the drive is an adventure, especially with clouds which limited the view for some time.

Pelorus Bridge: A beautiful riverbed, used for a movie scene in The Hobbit. While we were standing on the bridge, a big truck crossed it and it felt like an earthquake, not knowing how the bridge withstands this weight and vibration.

Interislander Ferry: Enjoying the beautiful landscape of the sounds on the ferry with a seal swimming close by. After we left the South Island, Lukas and I started a Mario Party match as a team against two extrem coms. For the first half of the game we were slowly falling behind and we lost a few Minigames. We caught up to them and then slowly turned the tides to our favour. When we thought, we could win the game, the last 5 rounds the duel fields appeared. The first duel started with 1 Star each as the bet and the Minigame options were challenging. Some Minigames are impossible to win against extrem, but we were lucky and Lukas defeated the opponent. Right after I stepped on another duel field and now we had to bet 2 Stars each. The tension was making my hand shaking. The Minigame was collecting/catching Gumbas, where you have to draw a small circle around them, but not around the bombs! I did a practise run and lost it quite hard, because extrem was way faster. I still had a little hope but loosing the duel would be loosing the Party. I started the Minigame and in the beginning I kept up with the com. I almost circled a bomb while trying to get 3 Gumbas at once. We were even 15 / 15 then right before the finish 20 / 20. In the last second I got a golden Gumba which brought me the win and also saved us the game.

Weta Cave: We arrived early at the place and looked around the gift shop. So many things I would like to buy, but because of this amazing craftsmanship spending days for one piece, the sculptures and replicas have a proud price. The tour itself was fascinating and we learned a lot about their history, how they create thier artwork and how they combine modern technology with craftsmanship. Our tour guide did a great job, explaining everything. For one movie scene they created a full bodysuite which took about 12 hours to put on, so they started at 7 pm and filmed the scene at 7 am.

Mt Victoria / movie settings: The Hobbit hide out is next to a walkway in a forest. You can only tell from the trees in the background, but the roots they are hiding under don't exist. For people who never watched the movies, it must be weird that people take a picture of this place (last pictures). The video is another place close by, where they made a short scene with a Vertigo effect, but it's impossible with the phone and it looked quite different back then.

    11 de dezembro de 2025, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

An almost perfect circle vulcano on the west coast rising above the land. It was hidden in the clouds, but in the evening we had a nice view while shopping for dinner. We drove a long way about 5 hours and I still get confused by the christmas decorations. Other than that we did kind of a rest day to have more energy for a long day tomorrow.Leia mais

  • The final: Hobbiton

    12 de dezembro de 2025, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We got an earlier tour and enjoyed an amazing experience around the Hobbiton movie set with many funfacts and little details. Just 2 years ago in 2023 they added two hobbit holes with fully enterior and funny little eastereggs. Its fascinating how they keep this little fantasy village by its original shape. There is so much to explore and imagining the movie scenes gives me goose bumps. I am really glad, Lukas and I had the opportunity to explore the world Tolkien created and Peter Jackson gave it an actual place in the real world: New Zealand.Leia mais

  • The last day in NZ

    13 de dezembro de 2025, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After Hobbiton the last day was like a good bye. In the morning we picked up a woman from Hawaii who was hitching to Auckland. We had a funny conversation before we dropped her of at another town before heading to a gorge with remnants of the gold mining era. In Waihi we stopped at a huge gold mining hole. About 100 tons of rock were crushed to get 2 tablespoons of gold and 20 tablespoons of silver. We continued up to the Coromandel Peninsula and went to Whangamata Beach, where we saw a Pohutukawa or christmas tree in full blossom. We didn't drive all around the peninsula skipping about 2 hours driving and followed a windy mountain road through the Coromandel Forest Park instead. We arrived with an empty fuel tank at our accomodation and by coincidence the rental company is only 100m away, closer than the next fuel station.Leia mais

  • Back to the other side

    15 de dezembro de 2025, Alemanha ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

We left the car at the rental place around 11 am and spent a few hours at the airport before taking of at 3.30 pm local time on sunday. A total of about 23 hours in the air and a lay over of almost 10 hours (6.5 hours were planned) after a technical issue in San Francisco. While waiting at the gate a man was shouting at people sitting to close for his comfort, which was more than 2 meters of comfortzone. After the police came everything calmed down and the man left the place.Leia mais
