    Valentines Day

    February 14 in Nicaragua ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Yesterday we went to the ocean and watched the sun drop into the Pacific. Warm air, crashing waves, a sky turning gold and pink. It felt like God setting the tone before something special.

Today at the finca we hosted a Valentine’s dinner for the parents of the children in our program.

    The interns set the tables.
Cooked with Javier and Gabby’s significant help!!

    Served.
    Poured drinks.
    Cleared plates.

It wasn’t fancy by North American standards — but it was beautiful.

    Table Clothes.
    Smiles.
    Families lingering longer than usual.

Parents being honored instead of always carrying the weight.

There’s something powerful about serving quietly. Not preaching. Not building. Just honoring people.

    Love looks like many things.

Tonight it looked like interns in aprons, parents laughing together, and a simple meal at the finca.

A good reminder that mission is not only projects and programs.

    Sometimes it’s just a table.

And that is it for Mark on this trip as he leaves for Florida to see his valentine on Sunday! As well, the child is Oaklyn, his grandchild in Cochrane, celebrating Valentine’s Day with an announcement.

  • Leon Churches

    February 13 in Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This morning we walked through León’s churches.

We began at San Francisco, standing before a statue of Francis with a wolf — a reminder of the story where he brought peace between a fearful town and a wild animal. Reform doesn’t always start with confrontation. Sometimes it begins with courage, humility, and reconciliation.

I shared about the cross I received years ago at a Franciscan monastery. Francis once prayed before a cross like it and heard, “Rebuild my church.” At first he thought it meant a building. Later he realized it meant people.

From there we walked toward the Cathedral — massive, white, enduring. We talked about how the early church grew slowly and patiently, and how things shifted when Christianity gained power. Influence can protect. It can also complicate.

At La Recolección, surrounded by gold and beauty, we read:
    Micah 6:8

“Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”

    Gold, power, reform, humility.

León preaches without saying a word.

  • Kids club

    February 12 in Nicaragua ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

Thursday was our first day at Kids Club.

The interns jumped straight into different stations - reading, typing, sewing, crafts. Lots of laughter, energy and joy.

This is why we came. Four and a half weeks to love, serve, and be shaped in the process. The children of León are not projects — they are people. And today, they welcomed us.

Grateful for our Nicaraguan team who make this possible. This is just the beginning.

  • First Day in Nicaragua 🇳🇮

    February 10 in Nicaragua ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

    We didn’t waste any time.
After arriving, we headed straight north into the mountains to Matagalpa for our first night. Cooler air, winding roads, coffee country — a beautiful way to begin.

The next morning took us higher and deeper into the hills.

We went zip-lining through the canopy and visited two waterfalls — one likely El Tucumá and then Cascada Blanca EcoLodge for lunch beside another waterfall.

After lunch, we piled back in for a 4-hour drive to the Finca.

Dusty roads. Open windows. Music. Intern chatter. The shift from adventure to long-term presence.
And now we settle. And Liam used the washroom!!

The interns will be here for 4½ weeks.
Not just to see Nicaragua — but to slow down, work, serve, reflect, and be formed.

    The mountains were the welcome.
The Finca is where the real work begins.

  • Florida

    February 9 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Left the snow behind in Canada and landed in Orlando late Sunday night after a 9-hour layover in Toronto.

Tuesday we began the slow migration south — Orlando to Miami by car. Florida stretches out differently when you drive it. Palms, billboards, long flat highways, humidity starting to press in.

We stopped at the beach at Port Canaveral and at Jupiter. Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time for some. We will be close to Pacific in a day.

We’re staying in Little Haiti in Miami. Airbnb tucked into a neighborhood alive with Latin rhythm. Murals. Spanish everywhere. Caribbean colors. And this morning? Roosters.
    Yes. Roosters.

Woke up to chickens instead of alarm clocks.

It feels like the world is already shifting before we even reach Central America

    Now we’re on the flight.
Snow to sun. Quiet prairie to Latin pulse. Comfort to calling.

Interns are tired but steady. There’s something about these transitions that does formation work all by itself.

Airports, layovers, rental cars, unfamiliar neighborhoods — they loosen you up.

Let’s see what God is preparing.

  • Leaving Saskatoon!

    February 8 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ -2 °C

    Leaving Saskatchewan. Heading South. 🌎

We’re on the move again — the second 3E Internship trip of 2025/26 is officially underway.

    Destination: Nicaragua.

First stop: Saskatoon ➝ Toronto (7-hour layover) ➝ Orlando for the night.

    Toronto: –20°C
    Orlando: +25°C

    That’s a 45-degree swing in a single travel day.

From prairie winter to palm trees.

From frozen breath to humid air.

    From parkas to short sleeves.

There’s something about leaving in the cold that makes the departure feel sharper. But that contrast always reminds us why we go. Movement stretches us. Travel exposes us. Mission reshapes us.

By tomorrow, we’ll be closer to the people, the friendships, and the work that has shaped this partnership for years.

Grateful for safe travel so far.
Pray for smooth connections and rested interns.

    Here we go again!!
