  • When are these people going!!

    20. Januar 2017 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Note me in traditional attire. There are alot of pretty gruesome photos on my camera!

  • Homestay near a lake

    20. Januar 2017 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Up into the mountains today to a town called Chichicastenango which has a large market and a very colourful cemetary. Loved wandering around the markets taking photos.

Bought a little hand made material cat which spoke to me - had to bargain hard though! Her name is Guatsup!

Had my smoothie for the day in a cute cafe.

Then onto our homestay in the village of San Jorge La Laguna overlooking Lake Atitlan. My room is pretty large. We share a toilet and a cold trickle of a shower with the family. There is a kitchen and two other bedrooms one which is used as a homestay room as well. So the family must sleep in one room when a homestay is on. See the various photos of the home including my colourful bed!

Then there is a central courtyard which is partly covered.

We had a traditional Guatemalan meal with the family with a very bad soapie on the tv in the background.

We were told to bring gifts for the family - food shampoo pots etc. Anything as the families don't have much. I took soap and shampoo. Others took pineapples, corn, muffins. I should have got some pencils or pens for the kids as well.

There were two kids - the boy was fascinated with the padlock on my case. The little girl was curious about everything so I showed her the photos and videos I had on my phone - including Minnie Mai dancing and skipping which she loved. She also loved the dolphin and sea lion photos.

The whole tour group got dressed up in traditional clothing supplied by our families. Then we went to the town centre to hang out. We also went to part of a church service where a band played!

Dinner was pretty good and filling. Early night as no internet and nothing to do. Our home had these crazy christmas lights in the courtyard which played the same christmas tune so in the ear plugs went!

  • Volcanoes everywhere

    21. Januar 2017 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

In Panajachel today which is right on Lake Atitlan. Its quite beautiful as you stare at the lake with the three volcanoes surrounding it.

We decide to go to two villages on the lake. You never know when the public boat goes as they wait for passengers so we negotiate for a private boat. God what a drama - it takes ages as they quote you ridiculous prices which you wouldn't pay in any western country. Finally we get an acceptable price $16 each for two villages spending an hour and a half in each with a half hour boat ride there and back.

The villages are great - the first one San Pedro has a very busy main street with a market and sits at the base of Pedro volcano. The second one San Marcos is a small village with views towards the volcanoes. Its got a very hippy Bryon Bay feel with lots of massage and yoga places and some very cute cafes with a chilled out jungle vibe.

After checking out San Marcos I decide to get a crepe at the only restaurant which has a view of the lake in the village. I paid abit more but the views were sensational! And it had wi fi. The others went and had bigger lunches at one of the jungle cafes and then crepes at one of the hip cafes. But give me a water view and I am in heaven!

Then we had the roughest ride I have ever had in a boat! We were laughing and screaming at the same time!!

I walk around town looking at the shops. I saw these really ugly bead lizards which I wanted for the christmas tree but when they start at $65 when its worth $20 I just can't be bothered with the haggling. It was hideous but I will go to bed dreaming about it!

Back to the hotel for a rest then we hit the street for dinner. I get some chicken and salad on little tortillas and the others get hotdogs with four different sauces which were put on before and after the hotdog went in then topped of with piles of cabbage!

Exhausted, hot and dusty, and looking forward to my shower. But my room is right off the lobby and directly in line with the entry from the street so its very noisy.

Good grief - went to have my shower and its cold! So I dry off, get dressed and approach reception. A guy comes in and fiddles with the shower head and the water is warm. So I think I will give this a go. Mistake - its still too cold to be comfortable. By this stage the floor is wet and filthy from the dusty shoes of the shower fixit guy.

After two days without a shower and covered in sweat, grim, dust, suncreen and mosquito repellent I need a hot shower. So I dry off again get dressed and out I go.

This time they tell me the hot showers are on the third floor! So why is anyone on the tour given a room without a hot shower. Plus my room is small, windowless and very stuffy.

Anyway they offer to change my room but I can't be bothered packing up all my stuff. So up I go to the third floor with my wash bag. The room is about five times the size of mine and has a lounge area. Too tired to care - I just want my shower.

    Now going to bed refreshed!

  • Just plain weird!

  • Back to Antigua!!

    21. Januar 2017 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Love this town. This afternoon going to look at the handicrafts and just wander taking photos.

Some are going to climb the volcano which overlooks the town. There were five deaths last week when a group and their guide were blown off the volcano in their tents when the weather turned.

I asked our idiot guide (who has insightful comments such as 'there is alot of history there' but doesn't tell us any!) about the walk and his reponse was that it was quite short. We have all learned that he is quite stupid so I start interrogating him. Its actually a six hour walk on loose rocks!!!
    Is he for real!!

Weather is abit overcast which I love. Cooler for walking. Its Saturday and some streets are closed off and everyone is out walking. Great atmosphere and it got even busier in the evening.

So nice not to have to dodge the cars and the closed off streets are so pretty without them.

We have dinner in this fabulous restaurant in terms of its decor. Its quite spectacular as you can see from the photos. In the evenings its dinner by candlelight. So my travelling companions - a swiss girl and a Perth uni student and I all have pasta which we have been craving. The service and the meals were great.

Then we head to the town centre which has a park in the middle and cafes and shops surrounding it and have some great gelato.

End of a good day which is topped off by me catching up on my washing! Yes its the little things like clean clothes.

  • Chilling in Antigua

    22. Januar 2017 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Just having a chill day today. Catching up on emails and postings.
Walked around abit and did some cafe hopping. The cafes here are fantastic.

Finally got my key lime pie! It was fabulous.

We got our lunch from the back of a car for $1.00! Really nice pastrie filled with chicken and it was heated.

Also looked at the lovely churches and old buildings here. The town has lots of little parks scattered around.

Walked up to the cemetary which overlooks the town to have a look at the view.

Meeting the new tour guide and group additions tonight. And then we leave for Honduras at 4am!!

We all need some bland comfort food so we are having McDonalds for dinner tonight in the most placial McDonalds I have ever seen. Beautiful outdoor courtyard in a colonial building.

Then a quick stroll around the centre of town with a gelato and an early night. You can see one of the lovely courtyards in our hotel.

Oh and I can rest easy as you can see from the sign our hotel has got it covered!!

  • Its in the Guatemalan detail

  • Off we go in the dark

    23. Januar 2017 in Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The 4am start was to ensure that we don't get stuck in traffic in Guatemala City which can take three hours.

Last night I ended up going back to the restaurant where we had dinner the night before indulging in a glass of red with some bread as I sat in a window seat watching the passing parade. The street is still closed to traffic - must be a weekend thing.

Our tour guide is much better than the last one which is a welcome relief from the idiot we had. This one gave us more information in the pre tour meeting than dopey had in the previous 15 days!

I am in Honduras now! So far it looks like Guatemala.
Except that there are alot of cowboy hats!

The town we are staying in is close to the Mayan Copan ruins which we are seeing tomorrow. The town itself is lovely with cobbled streets and its so nice not to have all the pushy hawking. Also there are not many tourists.

We drive an hour into the mountains to these amazing hotsprings set in the jungle. There are about 20 pools to soak in, lots of mud to smear all over us and stones to sit on near the hot water waterfall so its like a steam room. So relaxing and just what I needed. Also I skipped the awful lunch provided on the tour and got my own from the supermarket and also got a discount on the tour. This meant I had the springs all to myself for an hour! Bliss!

Then off to the best restaurant in town where every tourist that is in town is eating in as well. Its nicely decorated and my simple meal of chicken salad and roast potatoes is the best I have had since leaving Sydney.

  • Honduras in a day!

    24. Januar 2017 in Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Disappointed we didn't spend more time in Honduras but I guess you can't do everything.

They used to drive to the coast but the tour buses kept on getting robbed! So you have to fly and given that, the company decided to go to a beach resort in El Salvador instead.

What we did was great though.
The hot springs and the Copan ruins.

Got up early and wandered around the town which was nice and peaceful at that hour and watched all the street businesses setting up.

I went on a guided tour of the ruins which I won't do again - three hours of non stop talking - way too much information. I'd rather google the information I am interested in and wander around the ruins in my own time.

There were not many people there and it would have been so peaceful except for the non stop talking. But he was just doing his job and was very passionate about it.

Then back to town for lunch in last night's restaurant. I didn't have much time so I ordered to go. They said 10 minutes but I thought more like 25 minutes. Closer to 30 minutes. Then a mad rush up a hill to the hotel for our departure to El Salvador.

I spoke to the restaurant owner, who I thought had to be a westerner for the quality of the food, the menu and the decor. He has been in Honduras for 15 years and sounded american. He also has a little hotel attached to the restaurant and runs tours! He said his main business comes from middle class Hondurians and that he tries to pay more than the average wage.

  • Gory!

    24. Januar 2017 in Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

These are photos from the Copan mayan ruins in Honduras. They are not as big as others but they are renown for the number of statutes that were found there.

In the fourth photo you can see the restored section on the left and on the right how it was before restoration.

Had to include another annoying selfie and notice the hat has made a comeback!

The big round stone was where the human sacrifices were made. You can see at the top where the head goes and as you were decapitated the blood would run down the grooves in the sides.

Only the nobles were sacrficed as it was a great honor and you turned into a god. The male nobles had concubines and had a pretty good life until sacrifice time! To select the person they played a game which went on for days. I wonder if some lost on purpose! If I won by some miracle I think I would be saying sure but just let me 'walk the dog' one last time!

  • Driving through El Salvador at night

    25. Januar 2017 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Never thought I would be doing that!

The drive to El Salvador seemed to take ages - even though it was only six hours it felt like 10.

The border crossing was pretty quick. Our guide told us it took him about four trips to have it run smoothly. He said sometimes they can keep you there for hours. The border police came into the van and looked at us and our passports even though they had already been stamped.

When we cross the border the town has alot of bars on windows and doors, fences and barbed wire. The middle class homes are surrounded by fences and barbed wire and there is even barbed wire on their balconies.

Plus for the size of the town there are alot of funeral homes!

The countryside is hilly and brown and the rural homes are similar to Honduras and Guatemala.

As the sun goes down I just want to get to the hotel, have a shower and go to bed.

After hotel checkin we are briefed on all the tours. The tour company really presses these tours and doesn't cater much for the budget traveller so you really have to press the guide for information on how to do things yourself and then half the information is left out.

None of the tours appeal - a three hour town tour (no way) and a boat trip to watch the sunset with alot of drunk aussies and poms (shoot me now).

There was a very interesting tour which would have shown us where all the guerilla warfare took place, given us the history and allowed us to meet a former fighter who joined up when he was 12. Then the tour finished at a waterfall. Fabulous I thought but only two of us were intetested and they needed four.
They offered to drive us there and back for $50 when the tour with an English speaking guide was $35!!
    No thanks was the response.

Kayaking to watch the sunrise on the lake sounds nice but not sure I could keep up with two hours of kayaking or get up st 5am.

No hot shower so out I go and after alot of fiddling around I am told there is hot water. When I have my shower its barely luke warm. They must have a different definition of hot here! Too tired so cold shower it is and to save time I wash my clothes in the shower. The joys of budget travel.

  • First day in El Salvador

    25. Januar 2017 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Wake up feeling tired. Hot room and rock hard mattress so on the denco rub goes.

Decide to take a tuk tuk for $2 (50 cents for a local) down to the lake (Lake Suchitlan) as bus (35 cents) was taking too long.

Have to pay either $1 or $3 to enter lake area. As I have no idea whats what I go for the cheap option!

Turns out the $3 gains you admission to a pool with a view of the lake!! Nice. Pity our guide didn't bother to tell us this! I would have swum in undies and crop top with no towel but decide just to chill by the lake.

Its so lovely and peaceful and no tourists which is wonderful. I have the whole lakeside to myself so I just sit and relax with the dog who joined me.

Next is lunch at the most fabulous place. There are lots of little places to choose from under the one roof. Each place had its own table setting.

And have a look at the chicken and avocado sandwich I ordered!

I spend a while here and run into Suzanna my buddy from the tour group. We think she has bronchitis but its been getting worse so she saw an El Salvadoran Dr who was actually an obstetrician! last night and has been put on all this medication.

We hang out then I catch the public bus up the hill.

Wander around the town which is lovely and peaceful. The handicrafts are way over priced.
Indigo dye is big here! Go figure.

Then a banana and chocolate crepe sitting watching the town centre activities! Lovely day.

  • Off to the beach in El Salvador!

    27. Januar 2017 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Up early for breakfast in a cute cafe.

Then its a 6 hour van journey to the beach!

On the way we stop at a shopping mall! I am in heaven - an El Salvadoran mall! The group vote was to wait to have lunch an hour and a half away rather than at the mall which meant lunch at 4pm! I hate this group.

Mad - there was a KFC there which had my name on it! We therefore had only 20 minutes which meant speed walking to check out the mall and get soaks band aids and stock up on food from the supermarket as the hotel is 7km from town and may be overpriced like the Guatemalan jungle resort.
Went at it like a maniac but KFC had to be dropped - devastated but I got everything else.

Arrive at the hotel which is shacks near the beach with two hut restaurants and a bar overlooking a gorgeous beach. Have a quick dip in the pool then have my avocado and tomato roll then straight into a hammock with an ocean view with two margaritas as its happy hour! Bliss!

Meanwhile the rest of the tour group has yet to order their lunch.

This time I was given an even bigger knife to cut my tomato and as I walked past our tour group they wanted to know if I traveled with this knife! I looked a real sight!

So rest of the day spent in the hammock and had dinner laying on a beach chair listening to the ocean.

    Wonderful!

  • Up the volcano I go but land in hell!

    27. Januar 2017 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

So we get a great sales pitch on this volcano visit by our tour guide. Easy he said - two hour drive there and back in a pick up truck plus 60 minutes hiking. Ok I thought. I can do that.

Back by 1pm at the lastest - so that leaves plenty of time for hammocking and margaritas!

The pick up truck arrives and there are 12 people - first sign of trouble. A mattress goes in the back and seven people are expected to cram into the back with five inside. I'm not stupid - as everybody eagerly jumps in the back I make it to a seat.

An hour's drive there? Three hours later we get to the volcano but the driver takes us to the wrong volcano!!

But let me back up abit. We assumed it was a drive on a road as we were not told otherwise. Part was a road then a very bumpy dirt track uphill followed by very steep cobblestone! It was so bumpy we were being thrown all over the place. Thank christ I was inside.
And this pickup truck wasn't a four wheel drive!

There was not even a remote bit of commonsense from our tour guide - who I might add has done this trip three times before.

So we are struggling up hill and the truck is basically sliding backwards down the hill! So we all yell stop and stumble out of the truck. Not sure if the driver or tour guide would have made this crucial safety decision!

Then half get back in and half start walking. The truck finally makes it to the wrong volcano. So while waiting for the others we walk to the top of this volcano which has telco towers! No much of a view so we trudge down. Turns out a large chunk of this volcano is owned by one person who likes to live alone. He charges $5 to get to the other side of this wrong volcano. The tour guide does say this is his fault and then says he will pay the $5 (to the wrong volcano I might add) and has rung for another truck. I just want the last 5 hours back!

The $5 volcano has a lovely view and it looks like they are building a cafe and there is a half finished viewing platform.

Then back to the new truck which you stand in hanging onto a rope which gives you rope burn because the truck shakes so much going over the rocks!

There is a vote as to whether we carry onto the planned volcano. I vote quit but majority vote means we start hiking. I'm so over it and am thinking of my hammock.

At the top is a timber lookout which can only hold four people at a time - its pretty shaky though - hope no one is on it when it eventually collapses.

Back down the volcano in the rope truck then we have to cram into the original truck. Will this nightmare never end.......
We put another person in the front sitting between the gear stick so there is more room in the back and the guide sits in the back this time.

Once we arrive back we all rush to order lunch as that can take an hour. I go straight in the pool then to the hammock to have lunch.

I won't bore you will the bill saga at the hotel but I wasn't going to pay $9 for a piece of chicken when you can get a massive dinner of chicken rice beans and vegetables for the same price. The perils of ordering off menu.

    Day over thank heavens.

  • 5am and heading for Nicaragua

    28. Januar 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We are going to Nicaragua by boat and not a fancy boat. The trip is quite pleasant and we get ponchos smelling of fuel when the waves just start getting bigger and start soaking us!

We arrive at a beach in Nicaragua and get out of the boat into the water then walk onto the beach. Such an odd way to enter the country.

Thankfully a guy is there to carry our bags up the beach to the mini van - the guy carried three bags at once! I tipped him well as he works for tips and only works when these tours arrive by boat.

Also the people working in the customs office only put on uniforms when tours like ours arrive!

We drive to Leon the second largest town in Nicaragua. Lots of poverty in the rural parts as you can see.

The town is very busy with lots of bars and restaurants. We have a leisurely lunch in a lovely place with a courtyard and hammocks! I am loving it.

After a late and long lunch we have a quick walk around, make a supermarket stop, eat at MacDonalds and then go back to the hotel to rest.

And what am I doing tomorrow!!!

    Climbing another volcano!!

  • Volcano attempt number two

    29. Januar 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

I hiked up a live volcano and then slid down the side of it on volcanic ash on a wooden board at a 45 degree angle!!

Never thought I would do that! The lawyer in me is saying an extreme sport will not be covered by insurance and is this a good idea!

I did ask alot of questions though after the last debacle!

This is the only place in the world where you can do this so I think it is a must. The volcano is Cerro Negro and it is one of the youngest and most active volcanoes in Central America.

We set off at 6.30am in a four wheel drive and everyone had a proper seat! An hour's drive and then we started hiking. Check out my board!

It wasn't too bad but it was abit slippery climbing over the loose volcanic rocks.

Going early we missed the heat and the crowds. Its very windy at the top though. On go the protective suit, gloves and goggles and we are ready!
Leaning back makes you go faster and you keep your heels on the ash as you go down.

Some people can clock up speeds of 100km. The record is 175km on a bike but the guy that did that broke both his arms, legs, collarbone and various other bones on his first attempt when his bike broke in half!

It was so much fun and I wanted to go faster but couldn't lift my heels up high enough! The guide said he was very impressed with my run! Some people didn't slide much at all and others only made it half way down. We all got covered in ash though with lots of grit and little rocks in our hair.

Exhausting but exciting. After getting lunch we set off for Granada about three hours away.

Once in Granada we get the most extensive and comprehensive safety briefing so far! Basically never go anywhere alone, if out at night get a taxi, if you go out at night beware of everyone, don't use any ATM that doesn't have an armed guard, only venture three blocks down the main street, avoid side streets, particularly the one that runs right pass the hotel!!, don't walk through any park after 5pm and then a list of alot of places you can't go near and a list of other places where you can go but you must get the hell out of there before 4.30 when its starts to go bad!

We are all wondering if the hotel is the best place to spend our time!

We head out for dinner and the main street and square are very lively. We have a great meal sitting outside with lots of street entertainment.

    An excellent day!!

  • I see lava!

    30. Januar 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

    Big day today!

Bit of a city tour including the cemetery. Then a visit to the biggest hammock.

Next a boat tour around the little islands that were formed by a volcano eruption. Now the rich have their homes there.

Then a few hours in a resort right on Laguna de Apoyo which is a crater lake. Beautiful and the temperature of the water was perfect.

After lunch I lay in a hammock with a smoothie - my favourite pass time here!

Then onto the Masaya craft markets where we didn't have long enough!

Last stop was the highlight which was the Masaya volcano where we got to look at the lava! It was fantastic!

You only get 15 mintures and when the whistle blows you have to quickly leave. You have to queue up and wait abit due to its popularity. All the cars and vans have to park facing the exit. Our tour guide put on a laser show in the van with some loud music which was abit of fun.

Very funny getting out of the van as we were told to be ready to rush out of the van and grab a viewing spot. We felt like the military on an operation!

  • Granada

    31. Januar 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ 🌬 31 °C

Walked around Granada - ok but Antigua was better.
So hot all you want to do is sit in a courtyard cafe drinking smoothies.

The cafes in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are fabulous and the ones with garden cafes in colonial buildings are the best.

In the afternoon off to Ometepe Island which is in Lake Nicaragua. Tedious public boat ride to the island - boat was very crowded and there were no seats. Then the kid sitting opposite me vomited.

Hotel is in the middle of nowhere but right on the lake so might have a chill day tomorrow.
