    22 januari 2017, Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Just having a chill day today. Catching up on emails and postings.
Walked around abit and did some cafe hopping. The cafes here are fantastic.

Finally got my key lime pie! It was fabulous.

We got our lunch from the back of a car for $1.00! Really nice pastrie filled with chicken and it was heated.

Also looked at the lovely churches and old buildings here. The town has lots of little parks scattered around.

Walked up to the cemetary which overlooks the town to have a look at the view.

Meeting the new tour guide and group additions tonight. And then we leave for Honduras at 4am!!

We all need some bland comfort food so we are having McDonalds for dinner tonight in the most placial McDonalds I have ever seen. Beautiful outdoor courtyard in a colonial building.

Then a quick stroll around the centre of town with a gelato and an early night. You can see one of the lovely courtyards in our hotel.

Oh and I can rest easy as you can see from the sign our hotel has got it covered!!

  • Its in the Guatemalan detail

    22 januari 2017, Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C
  • Off we go in the dark

    23 januari 2017, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The 4am start was to ensure that we don't get stuck in traffic in Guatemala City which can take three hours.

Last night I ended up going back to the restaurant where we had dinner the night before indulging in a glass of red with some bread as I sat in a window seat watching the passing parade. The street is still closed to traffic - must be a weekend thing.

Our tour guide is much better than the last one which is a welcome relief from the idiot we had. This one gave us more information in the pre tour meeting than dopey had in the previous 15 days!

I am in Honduras now! So far it looks like Guatemala.
Except that there are alot of cowboy hats!

The town we are staying in is close to the Mayan Copan ruins which we are seeing tomorrow. The town itself is lovely with cobbled streets and its so nice not to have all the pushy hawking. Also there are not many tourists.

We drive an hour into the mountains to these amazing hotsprings set in the jungle. There are about 20 pools to soak in, lots of mud to smear all over us and stones to sit on near the hot water waterfall so its like a steam room. So relaxing and just what I needed. Also I skipped the awful lunch provided on the tour and got my own from the supermarket and also got a discount on the tour. This meant I had the springs all to myself for an hour! Bliss!

Then off to the best restaurant in town where every tourist that is in town is eating in as well. Its nicely decorated and my simple meal of chicken salad and roast potatoes is the best I have had since leaving Sydney.

  • Honduras in a day!

    24 januari 2017, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Disappointed we didn't spend more time in Honduras but I guess you can't do everything.

They used to drive to the coast but the tour buses kept on getting robbed! So you have to fly and given that, the company decided to go to a beach resort in El Salvador instead.

What we did was great though.
The hot springs and the Copan ruins.

Got up early and wandered around the town which was nice and peaceful at that hour and watched all the street businesses setting up.

I went on a guided tour of the ruins which I won't do again - three hours of non stop talking - way too much information. I'd rather google the information I am interested in and wander around the ruins in my own time.

There were not many people there and it would have been so peaceful except for the non stop talking. But he was just doing his job and was very passionate about it.

Then back to town for lunch in last night's restaurant. I didn't have much time so I ordered to go. They said 10 minutes but I thought more like 25 minutes. Closer to 30 minutes. Then a mad rush up a hill to the hotel for our departure to El Salvador.

I spoke to the restaurant owner, who I thought had to be a westerner for the quality of the food, the menu and the decor. He has been in Honduras for 15 years and sounded american. He also has a little hotel attached to the restaurant and runs tours! He said his main business comes from middle class Hondurians and that he tries to pay more than the average wage.

  • Gory!

    24 januari 2017, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

These are photos from the Copan mayan ruins in Honduras. They are not as big as others but they are renown for the number of statutes that were found there.

In the fourth photo you can see the restored section on the left and on the right how it was before restoration.

Had to include another annoying selfie and notice the hat has made a comeback!

The big round stone was where the human sacrifices were made. You can see at the top where the head goes and as you were decapitated the blood would run down the grooves in the sides.

Only the nobles were sacrficed as it was a great honor and you turned into a god. The male nobles had concubines and had a pretty good life until sacrifice time! To select the person they played a game which went on for days. I wonder if some lost on purpose! If I won by some miracle I think I would be saying sure but just let me 'walk the dog' one last time!

  • Driving through El Salvador at night

    25 januari 2017, El salvador ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Never thought I would be doing that!

The drive to El Salvador seemed to take ages - even though it was only six hours it felt like 10.

The border crossing was pretty quick. Our guide told us it took him about four trips to have it run smoothly. He said sometimes they can keep you there for hours. The border police came into the van and looked at us and our passports even though they had already been stamped.

When we cross the border the town has alot of bars on windows and doors, fences and barbed wire. The middle class homes are surrounded by fences and barbed wire and there is even barbed wire on their balconies.

Plus for the size of the town there are alot of funeral homes!

The countryside is hilly and brown and the rural homes are similar to Honduras and Guatemala.

As the sun goes down I just want to get to the hotel, have a shower and go to bed.

After hotel checkin we are briefed on all the tours. The tour company really presses these tours and doesn't cater much for the budget traveller so you really have to press the guide for information on how to do things yourself and then half the information is left out.

None of the tours appeal - a three hour town tour (no way) and a boat trip to watch the sunset with alot of drunk aussies and poms (shoot me now).

There was a very interesting tour which would have shown us where all the guerilla warfare took place, given us the history and allowed us to meet a former fighter who joined up when he was 12. Then the tour finished at a waterfall. Fabulous I thought but only two of us were intetested and they needed four.
They offered to drive us there and back for $50 when the tour with an English speaking guide was $35!!
    No thanks was the response.

Kayaking to watch the sunrise on the lake sounds nice but not sure I could keep up with two hours of kayaking or get up st 5am.

No hot shower so out I go and after alot of fiddling around I am told there is hot water. When I have my shower its barely luke warm. They must have a different definition of hot here! Too tired so cold shower it is and to save time I wash my clothes in the shower. The joys of budget travel.

  • Dumped car in the middle of the money shotFor $1.00 I got to look at the pool

    First day in El Salvador

    25 januari 2017, El salvador ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Wake up feeling tired. Hot room and rock hard mattress so on the denco rub goes.

Decide to take a tuk tuk for $2 (50 cents for a local) down to the lake (Lake Suchitlan) as bus (35 cents) was taking too long.

Have to pay either $1 or $3 to enter lake area. As I have no idea whats what I go for the cheap option!

Turns out the $3 gains you admission to a pool with a view of the lake!! Nice. Pity our guide didn't bother to tell us this! I would have swum in undies and crop top with no towel but decide just to chill by the lake.

Its so lovely and peaceful and no tourists which is wonderful. I have the whole lakeside to myself so I just sit and relax with the dog who joined me.

Next is lunch at the most fabulous place. There are lots of little places to choose from under the one roof. Each place had its own table setting.

And have a look at the chicken and avocado sandwich I ordered!

I spend a while here and run into Suzanna my buddy from the tour group. We think she has bronchitis but its been getting worse so she saw an El Salvadoran Dr who was actually an obstetrician! last night and has been put on all this medication.

We hang out then I catch the public bus up the hill.

Wander around the town which is lovely and peaceful. The handicrafts are way over priced.
Indigo dye is big here! Go figure.

Then a banana and chocolate crepe sitting watching the town centre activities! Lovely day.
