  • Galapagos day five

    January 23, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

    Wow! Amazing! Fantastic!

I will go straight to the highlight.

We saw a male and female orca hunting for food.
Absolutely incredible. Apparently you might see this once every two years.

Oh and Isabela and Fernandina islands today.

We were out in the zodiacs and these two orcas were jumping and diving as they chased their prey. In this case turtles. They would swim right under our boats and then jump right in front of us. There were also swarms of frigates diving and picking at the poor turtle. Pretty gruesome.

The frigates were flying about 10 cms from our heads - it was crazy! Tippi would have been nervous!

We were looking at iguanas and sea lions along the shore but that went by the wayside as soon as the orcas made their presence known.

In the afternoon ses lions iguanas crabs and birds. And a wild ocean.

    Isabela island today.

Nice walk in the morning looking at the turtles and land iguanas followed by a cool dip in the ocean.
Its so humid you end up dripping in sweat. Luckily it was abit overcast.

In the afternoon we had a zodiac ride around the mangroves seeing turtles penguins and birds.

If you zoom in on the penguin shot you can see birds in the background - they blend into the rocks.

A visit to the captain's deck and then my favorite time happy hour with a pina colada on the lower outside deck as we cruise. Its so nice laying on the couches looking at the ocean and the birds.

We often see schools of dolphins.

Interesting fact is that sharks are attracted to boats the theory being that they have learnt that food may be available from experiences with fishing vessels.
So the cruise operator does not allow any swimming near the ship.

  • Galapagos crew

    January 25, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Our naturalist was german but has lived in the Galapagos for over 30 years. Very knowledgeable and passinate about the wildlife and the landscape.

She lives on Florena the oldest island and owns 8 acres about half of which she farms. Lives very simply - very much one with the land!

The bursur (or as the sign to his office said - hotel manager!) Carlos as I mentioned was fantastic - he looked after mum wonderfully. Very attentive and caring. And it was his first time as the bursur - he told mum he was very nervous. A very sweet and gentle person.

The crew were also excellent in getting mum in and out of the zodiac. Miguel the engineer always had a smile and was great with marge.

  • Galapagos day seven

    January 25, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

    Isabel island today.

    Last day!

One of the volcanoes on this island is due to erupt any day. We are wallking on part of that volcano today - not the part due to erupt though! Its a shield volcano so the lava path is apparently predictable.

Very humid but great at the top on the edge of the volcano. The clouds come and go.

  • Goodbye Galapagos!

    January 26, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

    Goodbye Galapagos!

What a wonderful cruise! Really fantastic.

If you want to see the Galapagos a cruise is the only way to go.

You can island hop and do day trips but you will spend long hours in boats and the towns are not very interesting. Plus its a hassle in the heat and humidity. But about 70% of tourists island hop.

Our group were often the only people at a site on an island. Then lounging on deck was wonderful!

So for me its a cruise all the way!

  • Farewell Margy :(

    January 27, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We flew to Guayaquil and checked into the lovely Wyndham hotel on the river. Luxory after 4 weeks on the road. All we want to do is lay in bed and watch tv. We didn't leave the hotel and only saw Guayaquil from the airport shuttle.

So the next day Margy set off to Los Angeles via Bogota then to Sydney the following day. She is booked into the Hilton in LA for one night with a late check out. Its great having the wheelchair assistance for Marge as they take you through immigration and customs and right to your taxi/shuttle and make sure you don't miss any connecting flights.

I took her to the airport and see her off then back to the hotel to have more breakfast from the amazing buffet. Then to my hotel room and back to bed. Its so lovely doing nothing and I am glad my earlier flight got changed to late afternoon.

Next its Quito for a night then I start my private Ecuador tour!

But first a selection of Margy on tour photos!

  • Off to the Amazon

    February 26, 2018 in Ecuador ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Sacha Lodge to be precise. But very hard to get out of my Wyndham Hotel bed - could have stayed there all day watching TV.

So the amazon is an hour flight, 2 1/2 hours by boat, a 20 minute walk and then a half hour canoe ride away!

It produces 75% of the world's oxygen - the lungs of the world.
Ecuador's amazon is small but has an extensive biodiversity.

The lodge is upmarket and when at capacity accommodates 65 guests. We have about 40 I think. You are divided into groups of 4 -5 and each group had a naturalist and a native guide. The native guide spots the animals/insects.

Only ceiling fans in the room and the fast speed is not that fast but its a very nice room and bathroom. There is also a balcony with a hammock but not sure if it will be too humid to lay in.

Think I will be having several cold water showers a day. So humid!

So after snacks, briefings and room settling we have dinner and then do a night walk.

Its beautiful here and the jungle is lush. No rain for a couple of weeks which is unusual but we are lucky that it rained earlier as it means more animals and insects will come out. When its hot they are hard to spot.

So early starts - 5.30am! We will do walks and/or canoe trips morning, late afternoon and night. Siesta time during the hottest part of the day.
