  • El Pavon Waterfall

    January 4, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

The students got up early so we could arrive at this beautiful waterfall and have it all to ourselves. It is really off the beaten path and not everyone knows about it. But if you want to have it to yourself you must get there by about 8 o'clock. First you have to drive a few miles down a small dirt road to get there. Then it's just a short hike into the forest. From the pictures you can see who is the most adventurous. Not everyone chose to go in so some students are not pictured.Read more

  • Boruca Masks

    January 4, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Every year we stop at this little hut where an indigenous artist sells his family's masks. These are probably the most unique thing for us to bring home from Costa Rica. They have a history for the tribe related to fighting against the Spanish. And artisans continue to make them now, although quality can vary. If you buy them in a tourist souvenir shop you will pay three times as much. The work is just stunning.Read more

  • Spheres

    January 4, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We have not received a very good explanation of these but these huge stone spheres were found. They are indigenous artifacts and it's not fully clear what they were used for. But now they are on display in a local park.Read more

  • Mask Workshop

    January 4, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Students completed a workshop on indigenous mask making with a local Boruca artist. Here you see them painting their own masks and also attempting to carve the Balsa wood to form the masks. We then learned about indigenous weaving, and how to make all of the different colors using natural ingredients like turmeric.Read more

  • Daisy the Duck

    January 5, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Our current hotel comes with a house duck. Her name is Daisy and she was found as a baby by the side of the road and would not have survived if the hotel owner did not grab her. She likes to fly around and land on people. This morning she flew into my room around 7:30 in the morning and startled me. But she is very very sweet.Read more

  • Alturas Sanctuary

    January 5, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

The group visited an animal rescue center today. Many of the residents will be there for the rest of their lives. They were either pets that were turned in, they were injured, or they were turned over by families who were caught in possession of wild animals. Families can avoid financial penalties if they voluntarily give up the animals. But they can also go to jail. When animals are able to be rehabilitated, they are returned to the wild.Read more

  • Coati

    January 5, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

This coati has somehow endeared himself to the owners of the lodge where we are staying. He comes over to eat a banana or egg and is very friendly. That's not necessarily a good thing, as feeding animals and interacting with them changes their behavior. However, it was very fun to see him.Read more

  • Turtle Rescue

    January 5, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

We had the opportunity to visit a turtle rescue center. Each plot in this space may eventually house up to 100+ eggs. But somebody has to be there 24 hours a day during hatching season to see if any eggs open. When they do, the babies need to be quickly released into the water to avoid predators and poachers and dehydration.Read more

  • Playa Ventana

    January 5, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Students are at a beach that is named window beach. That is because the water has carved caves through the limestone and it looks like there are windows. I love this beach because it is a locals beach. It has way more local color than some of the more touristic beaches.Read more

  • Savegre River

    January 6, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Our activity today was rafting on the cleanest river in Costa Rica. This is not the rainy season so the rapids are only level two and maybe a level three here and there. But the scenery is beautiful and the students had a fantastic time.Read more
