    Cuenca & Ciudad Encantada

    July 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

We left Xativa with (lots of) pain in our heart 💔 and arrived at our first park4night spot in the dark. We woke up with a great view of Cuenca's houses built on top of limestone cliffs and surprisingly found ourselves in the middle of climbing Walhalla 🧗. After conquering some rare easy routes we visited the old centre with its impressive casas colgadas.

Even though we were already impressed by the weird rock formations around Cuenca, the nearby Ciudad Encantada took it to the next level!

  • Somiedo NP

    July 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

A Spanish friend recommended us to go to Somiedo NP because it's less touristy than Picos de Europa. He wasn't lying, because the only company we had during the beautiful 'Ruta de los lagos de Saliencia' were some cows 🐂.Read more

  • Playa de las Catedrales

    July 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We made a detour to Galicia to visit the 'Playa de las Catedrales' . The beach is dotted with impressive cliff formations, natural arches, caves and maaaaany tourists during the day. When we came back at sunset, we were magically alone to enjoy the amazing views 😍. Our camp spot right next to the ocean (= sleeping with the sound of the 🌊) made it the perfect stop!Read more

  • Oviedo

    July 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

After a few breathtaking stops along the coast, we took a city break in Oviedo - the capital of Asturias. We walked around the beautiful city centre and ate the best ice cream🍦.

Oviedo is famous for its cider and the traditional way of pouring it (from a high to create bubbles), so we had to try it. After finishing our glass with some effort - cider's not really our thing apparently - we realized that it always comes by the bottle and had to drink 4 more🤦‍♂️. We finished our night here with an unforeseen open air movie.Read more

  • Costa Verde

    July 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Asturias has one of the most spectacular coastlines in Spain! The 'Costa Verde' has an impressive mix of cliffs, deserted beaches and quiet coves backed by green valleys and forests.

Miel climbed on some beautiful rocks right next to the sea and convinced Laura to trailrun along the coast, which was hard, but really worth it (damn those views from the cliffs 😱). As it rained in the charming town of Llanes, we did some window-shopping & drank the heaviest hot chocolate ever (1 cup felt like three meals).Read more

  • Picos de Europa - Lagos de Covadonga

    July 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Our tour of Picos de Europa started with a visit to the Lagos de Covadonga. To be able to reach these lakes on your own, you have to enter the park before 7:30 (😱). A clear sign of how busy this place would be 🙈. Luckily, we found a less popular walk to enjoy our first glimpse of the Picos! As this National Park isn't too big, we drove around it to get a better impression and to reach the departure point of our multi-day hike!Read more

  • Picos de Europa - Multi-day hike

    July 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    Day 1: Fuente Dé - Refugio de Uriellu - 11km, 1300m↗️, 500m↘️, 6h30

Instead of taking the popular teleférico, we took the steepest way up to reach the Central Massif. After losing our way countless times and some reeaaally scary moments while descending, we finally reached the hut right under the famous Picu Uriellu.

    Day 2: Refugio de Uriellu - Bulnes - Caín - 22km, 500m↗️, 2100m↘️, 7h30

After a terrible night with virtually no sleep (a lot of snoring 🥺), we descended more than 2000 meters, first to the charming village of Bulnes, and then through the beautiful Cares Gorge. We had a welcome first real shower in our hotel in cozy Caín.

    Day 3: Caín - Fuente Dé - 17km, 1600m ↗️, 1000m↘️, 8h30

We embarked on our toughest day and immediately got lost. We crawled and stumbled through the thick forest and had to use all our navigation skills to finally find a path. Luckily we were rewarded with some of the best views, which we could enjoy all by ourselves, except for the vultures, horses, cows and ibex.

Lesson learned: creating a route on Komoot yourself ensures adventure!

  • Bilbao

    July 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

The biggest city of Basque Country is mostly famous for the Guggenheim Museum, but we were more interested in the food. After stopping at every possible vegan place and admiring some of the old houses and street art, we drove to San Juan de Gaztelugatxeko (better known as Dragonstone from GoT if that's too difficult to pronounce).

Before Bilbao, we enjoyed the beauty of the Costa Verde once more by swimming at a crystal clear bay and camping on the remote cliffs. We also visited the Altamira caves, or better said, the fake replica of it since there are only 5 people a day admitted in the real one.

  • Ruta de Flysch & San Sebastián

    July 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We made some beautiful stops on our way to San Sebastián!

We ate breakfast in Guernika, the city that was almost completely destroyed during the civil war. A bit further, we climbed at a hidden spot, with crazy seaviews from the top 😍.

After parking our car in Zumaia & taking the train to Deba, we were ready to tackle the 'Ruta de Flysch'. A little help from Wikipedia to explain what 'flysch' is: 'a sequence of sedimentary rock layers that progress from deep-water & turbidity flow deposits to shallow-water shales and sandstones'. If this doesn't make any sense, just check out the photos! As usual we didn't plan too well ahead so the high tide eventually forced us to climb some of these formations!

San Sebastián/Donostia is known as the Foodie capital veganism still has a long way to go. We had to look long and hard to find some vegetarian pinxtos. We did like the ever busy waterfront and Miel even tried some surfing 🏄.

These were our last stops in Spain 😢. After traveling/living here for almost two years, we can say this is one of our favorite countries ❤️. We will be back!
