Day 61
Mount Everest - Basecamp

Frisch aufgetankt ging es weiter Richtung Pheriche, ein kleines Dorf.
Der Pilot hat sich hat die Sauerstoffflasche angeschlossen- auf dem Weg dahin dann auch aufgedreht. Da wusste man es wird ernst.

Da sind wir dann etwas unterhalb des Dorfs (ca. 4300m) neben dem Flussbett gelandet und haben die zwei Italiener abgesetzt da wir sonst zu schwer gewesen wären für die weiteren Höhen. Und weiter Richtung Basecamp zu Füßen des Mounteverest. Ein Wahnsinn. Man bekommt ein gutes Gefühl dafür, wie gefährlich es ist dort. Das Ganze unheimlich beeindruckend.

Das Basecamp liegt auf ca. 5300m, also sind wir in ca. 5500m Höhe da drüber. Man merkt die Höhe übel. Man hat das Gefühl dass man dort nicht hingehört. Für Everest Bergsteiger geht da erst das schlimmste los.

Das Basecamp selbst ist aktuell leer weil die Saison bereits Ende Mai beendet wurde, nachdem bereits 17 Tote und Rekordanzahl Bergsteiger zu verzeichnen waren.

Weil das Alles so grenzwertig ist, ist da auch nur ein kurzer Überflug möglich, landen im Basecamp auch nach einem (weiteren) Heli-Unfall im Oktober nicht mehr erlaubt.

Dann wieder zurück nach Pheriche und mit den Italienern getauscht und somit ein bisschen Zeit sich ein bisschen umzuschauen.Read more

Day 11
Everest Base Camp!

We woke not feeling too bad from the exertions of the day before. It was a reasonable easy (aka bloody hard in any normal circumstances!) couple of hours up to Gorek Shep.

We leave as much wieght as we can there, and make our way over a rough trail of large boulders for another 2 hours or so. Just as we are approaching the swirling clouds clear for a few moments and we get our first up close view of the main attraction. She is nestled in behind a couple of other imposing subpeaks, which adds to her air of mystery.

Everest Base Camp (EBC) itself is a little underwhelming if I'm honest. Summitting only happens in the spring season as the ice is too dangerous now, so there are no tents or any real sign of it, as the recent monsoons has disrupted any signs of human activity. You almost wouldn't know you were there if it wasn't for the prayer flags and a sign spray painted onto a large rock. They are moving EBC again after this season, due to the climate impact on the Khumbul ice field, so we are glad to have visited this historic site, even if it wasn't the focus or highlight of the trip.

It is high, at 5384m, but a little lower than Cho La Pass. Despite the height gain, the walk out is as hard as the walk in, due to the condition of the trail. We are pretty tired getting back to the tea house, but we just had an uneasy feeling about this place - partly due to concerns about sleeping at 5100m, but also because it looked pretty ropey.

We asked about going down to the next place, but we're allowed to. It's a shame as our suspicions were right, and it was a bit of a rough place. No running water, sheet ice on the squat toilet floor, and a grumpy owner who refused to put the fire on at a reasonable time insisting 'its not that cold'! It was also so busy that all the rooms were full of tourists, which meant our poor guides had to sleep outside in tents!! Mind you I could see through the plyboard walls, and it felt like I was sharing my bed with an extremely ill person in the room next door!

We did leave our signed Canadian flag given to us by Stuart when he realised he wasn't going to make it, although we felt a little bad about leaving it in such a crappy place.Read more

L'arrivo al campo base dell'everest era previsto fra due giorni ma un po' perché mi sento in formissima un po' perché pare che tra pochi giorni il tempo peggiorerà, decidiamo di accelerare il programma. Tutta una tirata fino a Goraksheep, pranzo veloce e via fino al campo base dell'everest. L'emozione è indescrivibile, per me è come se fosse l'arrivo al Santiago di Compostela dell'Himalaya. Sono stata così fortunata da prendere un caffè nell'accampamento della Thamserku con Sonam sherpa, il fondatore dell'agenzia che oggi è forse la più importante del NepalRead more

Everest Base Camp - Day 9

We made it!!!!

It was very hard to get here but finally we reached Base Camp at 5365 metres. It actually turned quite emotional for me (and some others) as I sat in the awesome view of the Himalayas thinking about life - I had a little secret cry.

9 days of trekking for 7-9 hours each day had finally come to an end. As I sat there reflecting i was thinking about four long days trekking back down.

I am immensely proud of me and my group we all did amazingly well through colds, headaches and altitude sickness.Read more

EBC Tag 8 : Everest Base Camp - 5364m

Ca 2,5 H dauert der Aufstieg zum Base Camp. Immer entlang der Schneise, die der Gletscher ins Tal geschnitten hat. Eine trockene Staub und Steinwüste. Die letzte Stunde geht es kreuz und quer immer wieder bergauf bergab durchs Geröll.
Trockene dünne Luft und knallende Sonne.

Anstrengend auf über 5000m Höhe. Aber der Blick auf die majestätischen, umliegenden Gipfel entschädigt für die Mühe und erinnert daran warum man sich das an tut. - "vielleicht hätten wir auch am Strand doch ab und zu mal joggen und das ein oder andere Bier auslassen sollen. In Südamerika waren wir echt fit und flott unterwegs. Hier nicht so" - Naja es muss halt die solide Grundkonzeption ausreichen und wir stapfen weiter.

Dann erreichen wir endlich das Ziel.

Bis zum Khumbu-Eisfall darf man laufen. Ab hier braucht man dan die Climberpermit. Dort beginnt für die Bergsteiger dann der eigentliche Aufstieg zum Gipfel. Für uns war dieses Geröllfeld das Ziel und wir sind stolz es geschafft zu haben.

Um ganz ehrlich zu sein, mir reichen auch die 30 Minuten hier. Beeindruckend ist es, aber die Vorstellung tausende von Euro zu berappen, um hier monatelang im Zelt zu hausen hat wenig Reiz für mich.

Also nach dem wir die Aussicht genießen und nach einer kurzen Fotosession gehts zurück nach Gorak Shep. Der Rückweg geht schnell, nur die vielen Staubböhen die uns immer wieder entgegen wehen, nerven tierisch.Read more
