Furnas aka "Stinky Town"

We already passed Furnas on our way from the airport to Faial da Terra. We instantly smelled the rotten eggs while passing Furnas :-) There are of yourse no warehouse of rotten eggs but lots of hot springs and geysers. We also tried corn, cooked in one of the geysers and drunk of the numerous different mineral water springs.Les mer

We heard about a very famous dish everyone was eating in Furnas. It's a combination of different types of meat and vegatables cooked inside the ground with the heat of the earth. Arriving at the place it was so funny to see all the little pyramids and the signs indicating the restaurant to which the pod in the ground belongs to.

We also went on a hike in the forest to see some waterfalls and take a swim.Les mer

Chá Gorreana is a tea plantation and it was established in 1883. Because the Azores are basically made out of volcanic lava it has a very rich soil and therfor is a good place to grow and harvest Tea. We took a tour and of course tried all the different teas.

We also visited the Miradouro do Cintrão with a beautiful view over the cliffs and the ocean.Les mer

Funny sidenote: The water contains a lot of sulfur which is turning a white bathing suit into orange. If you have used sunscreen like me the skin will also turn into a carrot color as if you have used to much tanning lotion.Les mer

Confidently ignoring the signs that it's not allowed to enter we went on a journey to explore an abandoned hotel. It was such a strange feeling walking through the hotel and rooms.

Exploring Pico

The island is pretty small and I think we circuit the island at least three times :-) We explored a lot of places for example a lava cave, fancy restaurants, beautiful views and a impresive tree.

Daytrip to Island Faial

Early in the morning we took the ferry to Faial and drove straight to the big crater for a hike. Caldeira do Cabeço Gordo is the center of the island. The volcanic crater is definitely one of the highlights of the island. The huge crater is about two kilometers in diameter and 400 meters deep.

After the hike we wandered around the town visited the iconic Peter Café Sport which is a place all the sailors go to when they stop at Faial during their sailing trip around the world. You can also find hundreds of paintings along the coast with all the teams who sailed around the world.Les mer

The trip is coming to an end and we spent our last days in Ponta Delgada in a very nice Hostel. We also visited the famous pinapple plantation that is growing one of the worlds best pinapples.
