Jackson's Bay

We spent one night in the Waiototo River safari carpark, on the road to Jackson's bay, which had a nice view over the river. We had the place to ourselves, until another couple arrived after dark and parked about one metre away from us, despite having the choice of a whole carpark.

In the morning we went on the jet boat trip up the river. This was great and took us all the way from the alps to the ocean. The trip lasted about two and a half hours.

In the afternoon we went to Jackson's bay and had fish and chips at the lobster pot Cafe. The food was yum but expensive, and we couldn't eat it all. We spent the night in a freedom camping spot right by the beach.Read more

Haast to Jackson Bay

Jackson Bay is about 40 minutes south of Haast and is the furthest South you can drive on the West Coast. The Westerly Wind was very strong and the sea quite rough. One of the highlights (maybe the only highlight) of Jackson Bay is the Cray Pot Cafe and restaurant. The cafe sort of resembled a railway carriage and only had room inside for about a dozen people. By the time we got there the rain had set in. We managed to get a seat, and both ordered blue cod and chips, What a feed! Absolutely beautiful succulent fish and perfectly cooked chips, served in a frying basket. Returned to Haast and the rain continued. The rain was so heavy at one stage we couldn't hear the TV.Read more
