The Land of Israel

A few months ago we went to spend the weekend in Jerusalem, that Saturday we woke up, packed some snacks and begun to walk toward the Jerusalem Forest. We decided to pass through some places ''in the way'' like the Parlament (Knesset) and a park with olive tress and an old olive oil press next to a Georgian Monastery in the Rehavia neighborhood,
At the end we walked till Mount Herzl besides the Jerusalem Forest, also known as the Mount of Remembrance, because there is the National Cemetery and also there are some memorials for the vicitms of the Holocaust and for the victims of Terrorism as well.
The place is beatiful, the Jerusalem hills full of pines and cypress are breathtaking and we were ready to head back to get some food and to shower, we went back walking in the Rail-way of the Tram in Jerusalem and we were not the only ones, the rail was full of families and playful kids enjoying the day.

-Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest, remember the biblical story describing the creation of the heavens and the earth in six days and the God's command to rest in the seventh day and since Israel is a Jewish State there are some pecularities that happen every week on this day.

- Israel uses two different calendars the Gregorian calendar widely used all over the world and the Jewish calendar, a lunisolar calendar and for that reason every jewish holiday starts in the evening instead. For example according to the Hebrew Calendar today is the day 23 of the month of Elul and the year is the 5780.

-Shabbat is observed from a few minutes before sunset on Friday evening until the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night. That means the Shabbat hours are constantly changing every week and drastically between seasons. Obviously for the amount of day light hours.

-Traditionally, the woman light on two candles before sunset, and at the beggining of the dinner the man say some prays and distribuites the wine and the Challah (bread) with salt among all the familie memebers.

-Everything get cancel every week between Friday eve to saturday evening, including Public Transportation and Shop, with nearly not exemptions. To me means a lot of preparations for the weekend, since I was use to CR where everything is open nearly everyday. For example, in another countries like Germany, on the Sunday the supermarkets and almost every shop are closed, but the public transportation is still running.

-Shabbat Observers follow a whole package of rules including: not cooking, not writing, not using phones or any kind of technology, working, smoking, whatever it could count as a creation.
People for example turn on the lights day need before and also there is an special thing that keeps the food warm the whole Shabbat. Elevators in residence buildings have an automatic way on shabbat that make them stop in each floor, without pressing any buttoms or so.

Hace un par de meses fuimos a pasar el fin de semana a Jerusalem, ese sábado nos despertamos, empacamos algunos snacks y comenzamos a caminar hacia el Bosque de Jerusalem. Decidimos pasar por algunos lugares '' en el camino '' como el Parlamento (Knesset) y un parque con olivos y una vieja prensa de aceite de oliva junto a un Monasterio georgiano en el barrio de Rehavia,
Al final caminamos hasta el Monte Herzl, a la par del Bosque de Jerusalén, también conocido como el Monte del Recuerdo, porque está el Cementerio Nacional y también hay algunos memoriales para las víctimas del Holocausto y también para las víctimas del Terrorismo.
El lugar es hermoso, las colinas de Jerusalén llenas de pinos y cipreses son impresionantes y estábamos listos para regresar a buscar algo de comida y ducharnos, volvimos caminando en el ferrocarril del tranvía en Jerusalén y no éramos los únicos, el riel estaba lleno de familias y niños juguetones que disfrutaban del dia.

- Shabat es el día de descanso judío, conmmeora la historia bíblica que describe la creación de los cielos y la tierra en seis días y el mandato de Dios de descansar en el séptimo día y dado que Israel es un estado judío, hay algunas peculiaridades que ocurren cada semana en el Shabbat.

- Israel usa dos calendarios diferentes, el calendario gregoriano ampliamente utilizado en todo el mundo y el calendario judío, un calendario lunisolar y por esa razón cada día festivo judío comienza en la noche. Por ejemplo, según el calendario hebreo, hoy es el día 23 del mes de Elul y el año es el 5780.

-Shabat se observa desde unos minutos antes del atardecer del viernes por la noche hasta la aparición de tres estrellas en el cielo el sábado por la noche. Eso significa que las horas de Shabat cambian constantemente cada semana y drásticamente entre estaciones. Obviamente por la cantidad de horas de luz del día.

--Tradicionalmente, la mujer enciende dos velas antes del atardecer, y al comienzo de la cena el hombre dice unas oraciones y distribuye el vino y el jalá (pan) con sal entre todos los miembros de la familia.

-Todo se cancela todas las semanas entre la víspera del viernes y el sábado por la noche, incluido el transporte público y la tienda, casi sin exenciones. Para mí significa muchos preparativos para el fin de semana, ya que estaba acostumbrado a CR donde todo está abierto casi todos los días. Por ejemplo, en otros países como Alemania, los domingos los supermercados y casi todas las tiendas están cerrados, pero el transporte público sigue funcionando.

- Las personas que guardan Shabat siguen un paquete completo de reglas que incluyen: no cocinar, no escribir, no usar teléfonos ni ningún tipo de tecnología, trabajar, fumar, lo que sea que pueda considerarse una creación.
La gente, por ejemplo, enciende las luces el día antes y también hay algo especial que mantiene la comida caliente durante todo el Shabat. Los ascensores en los edificios residenciales tienen una forma automática en shabat que los hace detenerse en cada piso, sin presionar ningún botón o algo asi.Okumaya devam et
