    📍 John o’ Groats – A Milestone Moment

    Made it to the very tip of mainland Scotland — John o’ Groats! This little place has huge significance: the famous “end of the road,” the symbolic finish line after nearly 900 miles from Land’s End. 🌍

    I had my photo taken at the iconic white signpost, a must-do when you’re here. Behind me, the sea stretches out towards Orkney, with ferries, seabirds, and that wild coastal energy that makes this spot so special.

    It might be a small village, but standing here feels like standing on the edge of Britain — the perfect reminder that the journey is just as important as the destination. 🚐✨    Baca lagi

    Progress

    📍 Thurso – NC500 Progress

    I’ve now finished the entire east coast stretch of the NC500! Starting in Inverness, I followed the road north through Tain, Golspie and Helmsdale, up past Wick and on to John o’ Groats before reaching Thurso. That’s around 125 miles – about a quarter of the full 516-mile loop.

    From here the route swings west across the very top of Scotland towards Durness, before diving down into the wild west coast with Assynt, Ullapool, Torridon and Applecross still to come.

    Bettyhill Beach – Where the Sands Meet the Highlands

    Tucked away on the rugged north coast of Scotland, just off the A836, Bettyhill Beach feels like it belongs in two worlds at once. One moment you’re driving through windswept moorland and rolling Highland hills, the next you crest the rise and there it is – a vast golden sweep of sand framed by grassy dunes and the River Naver gently spilling into the sea.

    It’s not just a beach; it’s a stage where land, river, and ocean all perform together. The Atlantic rolls in with a steady breath, sculpting the sands into ripples that shimmer in the sun. At low tide, the bay opens wide and you can wander across miles of firm, clean sand, with seabirds wheeling above like kites strung on invisible threads.

    Bettyhill itself is a small village with a big heart. You’ll find the friendly Farr Bay Inn nearby, and the Strathnaver Museum tells the stories of the Highland Clearances – history woven into the very fabric of this coast. Walkers love this stretch because from the dunes you can follow coastal paths that give you huge, cinematic views across Torrisdale Bay.

    For those with a drone (and I know you’ve got one buzzing in your kit), Bettyhill is a playground. The river mouth cutting into the beach makes for dramatic aerial shots, especially when the tide’s on the turn. And if you’re lucky enough to get one of those big Highland sunsets, the sand glows like it’s been dusted with bronze.

    Bettyhill Beach isn’t loud, flashy, or busy. It’s raw and calm, a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful places don’t need to shout for your attention. They just wait, quietly, until you arrive.    Baca lagi

    Third night

    23 September 2025, Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    I’ve pulled up tonight at the Kyle of Tongue, ready to rest before crossing the famous causeway tomorrow. From this side, the view is already spectacular: the waters of the Kyle stretching wide, with the peaks of Ben Loyal rising proudly in the distance.

    The village of Tongue waits just across the water, with the Tongue Hotel and the Ben Loyal Hotel promising a warm Highland welcome, a pint, and maybe a story or two. But for now, it’s just me, Vanilla, and the evening light reflecting across the loch.

    It feels like the calm before another chapter of the NC500 – parked up with the Highlands wrapped around me. Tomorrow, the road carries on across the water, but tonight, the Kyle is my front garden.    Baca lagi

    Highland Chicken

    The plate descends like a gift from the Highlands themselves. A chicken breast, butterflied and stuffed with fiery, pepper-laced haggis, lies wrapped in a cloak of smoky bacon, crisped to perfection. The scent rises first — salt, smoke, spice — before the crowning glory is poured: a shimmering cascade of whisky cream sauce, golden as dawn, spilling across mash and tatties like molten treasure.

    One bite is enough to silence the room (at least in my head). Bacon crunch yields to juicy chicken, then comes the thrum of haggis, bold and unapologetic, its spices singing in harmony with the silky whisky cream. Each forkful is a Highland ballad made edible.

    🥃 The Whisky to Match the Mountain

    At my elbow: a glass of Glenmorangie 10-Year, glowing amber under the pub lights. I take it neat first — honey, citrus, a lick of oak — the kind of dram that warms the soul as much as the throat. A few drops of water release hidden notes, a Highland alchemy that softens the fire without dimming the flame.

    Together, food and whisky form a duet:
    • The haggis spices tease out the whisky’s pepper.
    • The bacon echoes its caramel depth.
    • The cream sauce smooths into the whisky’s sweetness, lingering long after each sip.

    Tuesday Sunset

    🌅 Kyle of Tongue Causeway at Sunset 🌅

    As the sun begins to slip behind the mountains, the Kyle of Tongue causeway transforms into pure magic. The waters either side of the road catch the fading light, turning into sheets of molten gold and rippling copper. Shadows stretch long across the estuary, and Ben Loyal glows with a soft amber crown, its jagged peaks silhouetted against a sky of pink, orange and violet.

    Driving across at this time feels like gliding through a painting — every reflection, every colour amplified by the stillness of the evening air. The causeway itself seems to hover between two worlds: the wild, untamed Atlantic on one side, and the calm mirror of the inlet on the other.

    This is a moment that lingers. The kind you don’t just see but feel in your bones. Vanilla, parked up on the far side, becomes part of the scene — a silhouette of freedom framed against Scotland’s northern skies.

    🏕️ The Campsite Vibe

    Just before the great crossing, I pulled into a quiet little campsite perched at the edge of the Kyle. It wasn’t just a place to stop — it felt like a stage curtain lifting before the show began. Vanilla sat proudly among a handful of other campers, her Indium Grey paintwork catching the Highland light as if she’d been dipped in steel and mist.

    From here, the view was already outrageous: the long, thin causeway slicing across the tidal waters, Ben Loyal rising like a jagged crown to the west, Ben Hope brooding steadily to the east. The air was fresh, charged with sea-salt and silence. I brewed a quick tea, knowing this wasn’t just a campsite — it was the prelude to one of the NC500’s greatest spectacles.

    🛸 Zoom’s Flight Over the Highlands

    I launched Zoom, my DJI Mini 4 Pro, and she lifted like a hawk catching a thermal. From the sky, the Kyle revealed its grandeur: ribbons of emerald water curling into pools of sapphire, sandbars glowing pale gold under the tide, and the causeway itself stretching impossibly thin, as if it were sketched by some giant cartographer’s hand.

    Vanilla appeared in the frame below — tiny, noble, almost mythic in scale against the vast Highland canvas. Zoom hovered high, capturing the whole scene in 4K glory: the campsite, the causeway, the mountains, the shifting play of light and shadow. It wasn’t just footage; it was memory etched into pixels.

    🚐 Crossing with Vanilla

    With Zoom safely landed, I eased Vanilla back onto the tarmac. As her wheels touched the start of the causeway, I swear she straightened her shoulders. This was her moment. The engine purred low, each gear change deliberate, as if she too wanted to savour every second of this crossing.

    The water lay on either side — glassy calm, then rippled with wind, then sparkling as the sun broke through for an instant. It felt like driving through the middle of a living, breathing world. Not just a bridge, but a passage — a threshold between land and sea, between the everyday and the eternal.

    Halfway across, I slowed again. Seabirds wheeled overhead, and the Highlands seemed to pause with me. I thought of all those who had come this way before: Norse raiders, crofters, travellers with horse and cart. Today it was me, Vanilla, and Zoom — modern pilgrims in an ancient landscape.

    Looking out across the Kyle, it struck me that this place isn’t scenery — it’s story. A chapter in the NC500 that doesn’t just pass beneath your wheels, but settles into your bones.

    Driving off the causeway, I looked back in the mirror. Vanilla’s reflection framed the silver ribbon of road, Zoom’s footage replayed in my mind, and the Kyle shimmered one last time. It wasn’t just a crossing. It was theatre. It was memory. It was the Highlands at their most untamed and generous.

    Loch Eriboll

    📍 Loch Eriboll – The Wild and Endless Sea Loch

    Rolling down the NC500, Vanilla and I pulled up alongside Loch Eriboll, a place that feels like Scotland showing off without even trying. This long, fjord-like stretch of water cuts deep into the land, surrounded by rugged hills and scattered crofts, with the road hugging its edge in sweeping bends. It’s not one of those quick photo-stop lochs – it’s a slow burner, stretching on and on until you start wondering if it’ll ever end.

    There’s history in the air here too. During WWII, German U-boats surrendered right in this loch, and you can almost picture the dark silhouettes lurking beneath the surface. Today it’s calm, reflective, and almost eerily quiet – apart from the occasional sheep wandering into the road to remind you you’re still in the Highlands.

    The views change every minute: one side craggy and brooding, the other softer with green slopes tumbling into the water. The light dances across the loch, one moment sparkling silver, the next moody and dark. It’s the kind of place that makes you pull over just to breathe it in, camera ready, but mostly just to stand still.

    Loch Eriboll doesn’t shout for attention – it simply is, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.    Baca lagi
