  • Another run in Brașov

    9 juin 2022, Roumanie ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Took another opportunity to get out for a run in Brasov. This time I ran through the park past the city center to the oldest neighborhoods.

Afterwards I got a Kürtős kalács to refuel. - Sean

  • The Black Church

    9 juin 2022, Roumanie ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

It's not as mysterious as it sounds. There was a large fire in Brasov and the church was one of the few things that didn't burn, but some of the exterior was blackened.

The inside is bright and airy (almost reminded me a bit of the Sagrada Familia) with wooden floors. It smells woodsy and homey.

It houses the largest collection of medieval Turkish carpets in the world. Pilgrims would bring them here as gifts. It's a little surreal to see rugs older than your country in perfect condition!

The reformer Johannes Honterus is buried here.

  • Romanian District

    10 juin 2022, Roumanie ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Old Town is German. We walked over to take a look at the Romanian district nestled right at the base of the mountains.

There was a flock of birds circling and circling around the cemetery.

The houses are further apart and it was peaceful. We were told that people were preparing for Pentecost on Sunday.

Brasov is known for its historical and cultural diversity which is well-represented in its districts. The German district, also referred to as the Centrul Vechi or the Old Town, is a testament to Brasov's Saxon heritage. Its architecture is dominated by baroque buildings and gothic structures like the famous Black Church, which reflect the Germanic influences due to the city's history as a part of the Transylvanian Saxon community. The streets of the Old Town are often buzzing with cafes, boutique shops, and tourists.

On the other hand, Schei, historically the Romanian district of Brasov, exhibits a more traditional Romanian culture. Here, you will find houses with typical Romanian architecture interspersed with historical Orthodox Churches like St. Nicholas Church. Schei was once a separate town, inhabited by Romanians, and it retains a quieter, more traditional atmosphere. It's also renowned for the vibrant Junii Brasovului festival that celebrates Romanian folklore. Thus, both districts offer different glimpses into the rich tapestry of Brasov's multicultural past.

  • Arad

    11 juin 2022, Roumanie ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We stopped part way through our train trip to Budapest. Thank goodness, because Romanian trains are sllloooow and even long ones don't have a dining car or potable water, so we were woefully unprepared.

We stopped in Arad just east of the Hungarian border.

Arad is a delightful city located in western Romania, a truly vibrant spot that gracefully combines its rich history with modern living. Brimming with architectural gems, Arad showcases an impressive assortment of Baroque, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau buildings that delight any architecture enthusiast. The city is also blessed with an abundance of green spaces, the largest of which is the charming Micalaca Park. Not to mention, Arad is a city of festivals and cultural events, infusing life into the streets with music, arts, and gastronomic fairs.

  • Leaving Romania, Heading for Hungary

    12 juin 2022, Roumanie ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Yet another border crossing! Ready to experience another country. We've loved Romania more than expected.

The people, the food, the countryside!

One interesting thing of note is that only a few crosswalks have pedestrian lights - but drivers are extremely courteous about noticing you and stopping. This has been very different from the other countries so far, where even with a light it's like playing Frogger.En savoir plus

  • Walking Tour of Budapest

    13 juin 2022, Hongrie ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We were on the Pest side for this tour.

Budapest, the heart-stealing capital of Hungary, is nestled on the banks of the majestic Danube River, with the hilly Buda district on one side and the flat Pest on the other. This city is a treasure trove of architectural splendors, from the iconic Gothic Revival-style Hungarian Parliament Building to the Roman-inspired Fisherman's Bastion. Budapest's rich history, however, also bears witness to somber periods. One of the city's most poignant memorials, the Shoes on the Danube Bank, is a moving reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust. This art installation features sixty pairs of metal shoes, cast in styles from the 1940s, lined up along the river edge. The shoes symbolize the thousands of Hungarian Jews who were forced to remove their shoes before being shot into the river by the Arrow Cross militiamen during World War II. The beauty of Budapest, therefore, lies not only in its stunning landscapes and architecture but also in its powerful reminders of history, fostering reflection and understanding among its visitors.En savoir plus
