  • Dinner with our New Famiglia

    10 listopada 2024, Włochy ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

After our hard work, we all sat down family style to eat our freshly-made pasta. They also served a local sweet white wine that was perfect with the meal.

Éowyn made friends with Chiara's son and they played foosball. Sean, should we be worried? This is the second Italian boy she's charmed despite the language barrier. The family lives upstairs.

Nonna Margie is TINY - barely taller than Éowyn!

  • Attempted Phone Mugging

    10 listopada 2024, Włochy ⋅ 🌙 57 °F

I debated making this post because I don't want to scare anyone, but it a was something that provided a good reminder.

On the way home from pasta making, our subway line was already closed for the evening so we had to walk home from Termini. I would have told you that I was in general cautious as I know that pick pocketing is rife in large cities, but I was likely being too lax about holding my phone out away from my body.

About half way home, while I was navigating, I heard running footsteps behind us and someone yelling something. I suddenly felt my phone grabbed out of my hands. Fortunately, I had it strapped to my coat and I had my finger through a ring.

I was able to yank it back by the strap and then wrestled for control while screaming at him (Éowyn says I was yelling no and then other incoherent things). I managed to get it back after a scramble where it fell with no damage other than the case popping off.

The would-be thief ran off. Éowyn was crying pretty hard, and a couple of guys I'd been eyeing as possibly sketchy came up, concerned about the bambina. They gestured for me to put my phone away and were clearly telling us to be careful. They followed far away until we were farther away from Termini and then left.

Yes, we were very fortunate that the thief didn't expect resistance. I maaaayyy also have yelled an obscenity at him as he ran away.

So this is your reminder to keep your phone secure. Use a strap, keep it close to your body, and minimize your use of navigation - I probably could have gotten us back with just a few glances rather than holding it out the whole time.

Also, Éowyn says her reaction is freeze, while mine is clearly fight, haha.

This is not to stop you from adventuring! I didn't feel like I was in physical danger (although my wrist and elbow were a little sore). We went out the next day, even at night. It's a reminder to be smart and aware while out and about.

  • Cisterna di Latina

    11 listopada 2024, Włochy ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

My great grandfather, Giulio Campoli, came from a small town to the southeast of Rome. First, I discovered that it is on the route to Naples directly from Rome and only about 30 min from Termini train station. Second, I discovered that the tickets were super cheap (especially since Eowyn is still half-price). Thirdly, I discovered that it's pronounced Chisterna di Latina (with the "ch" sound).

The ruins in the park at the center of town were closed off due to construction, but it was so fun to just wander around a bit and see a less touristy town, especially with our family connection. The train stop right before this one was "Campoleone", and I figure there must be a connection there as well.

The countryside out here was so beautiful - I couldn't capture it through the rather dirty train window but it's lovely!

  • Views from Our Apartment

    11 listopada 2024, Włochy ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We tried something new for lodging and stayed in a room in someone's apartment (the original intention for Airbnb). It was a fantastic location in the Esquilino district in Rome. Walking distance to Termini train station, and close to the Vittorio Emannuele subway station.

The views from our balcony were lovely, the neighborhood was quiet, and the room was bright and airy.

It was so nice to be able to make meals (a Conad grocery was right around the corner) and heat up leftovers in the shared kitchen.

  • St Peter's

    12 listopada 2024, Włochy ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Since we weren't with a formal tour group, we had to leave the Sistine Chapel, go back through the museums, then walk all around the wall. Once we were in St. Peter's Square, we had to wait in line to go back in to Vatican City again and all of the security. Italian efficiency, lol!

Eowyn was in awe of the biggest church in the world in the smallest country in the world.

The glass around the Pieta is being upgraded, so the statue isn't visible. In some ways, this replica that you could get up close to was kind of neat. You could see the holes in Jesus' hands.

  • Caphuchin Crypt

    12 listopada 2024, Włochy ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Once again, photos weren't allowed so I upload a couple from Wikipedia. I am in awe not only of the artistry and care show in the crypts, but also the devotion and service of the monks in the name of the gospel.

From Wikipedia: There are six total rooms in the crypt, five featuring a unique display of human bones believed to have been taken from the bodies of friars who had died between 1528 and 1870.

Crypt of the Resurrection, featuring a painting of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, framed by various parts of the human skeleton.

The Mass Chapel, as an area used to celebrate Mass, does not contain bones. In the altar-piece, Jesus and Mary exhort St. Felix of Cantalice, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Anthony of Padua to free souls from Purgatory.

The chapel contains a plaque with the acronym DOM, which stands for Deo optimo maximo ("To God, the best and greatest"), a term initially used to refer to the pagan god Jupiter, but claimed by later Christians. The plaque contains the actual heart of Maria Felice Peretti, the grand-niece of Pope Sixtus V and a supporter of the Capuchin order.[12] The chapel also contains the tomb of the Papal Zouaves who died defending the Papal States at the battle of Porta Pia.

    Crypt of the Skulls

    Crypt of the Pelvises

Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones

Crypt of the Three Skeletons: The center skeleton is enclosed in an oval, the symbol of life coming to birth. In its right hand it holds a scythe, symbol of death which cuts down everyone, like grass in a field, while its left hand holds the scales, symbolizing the good and evil deeds weighed by God when he judges the human soul. A placard in five languages declares: "What you are now we used to be; what we are now you will be."

I thought this quote was interesting:
Mark Twain visited it in the summer of 1867 and wrote in his 1869 book The Innocents Abroad (chapter 28): "The reflection that [the Capuchian friar] must someday be taken apart like an engine or a clock...and worked up into arches and pyramids and hideous frescoes, did not distress this monk in the least. I thought he even looked as if he were thinking, with complacent vanity, that his own skull would look well on top of the heap and his own ribs add a charm to the frescoes which possibly they lacked at present."
