    26. mai 2019, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today we moved just a few km down the hill Castagniers. We are staying in a house with Max and Ingela and friends of theirs from Sweden, Marie and Taubion(?). The house looks out over the Var valley and to the Mediterranean in the distance. The property has it's own petanque court, so one important feature of the week will be an international tournament.Les mer

  • Munich

    11. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We decided to catch the train into Munich to hire bikes for our two week trek along the German Danube. We booked a night at the Hotel Metropole right near the main station for 62 euro. We thought we would book three nights there for two weeks time and leave our luggage there. It turns out that in two weeks time all the prices go through the roof due to some event(s), and the Metropole would be about 900 euro for three nights.
A bit of searching and we found a good alternative around the corner at Arabest Aparthotel for 95 euro per night, and they will store our luggage.
We rented our bikes from Steffen at bikebringer.de. He delivered them to our hotel and was very helpful. Highly recommended.

  • Tuttlingen

    11. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We arrived back in Donaueschingen on the train at about 3pm. It was quite cool and overcast with rain threatening, so we made it a short day to Tuttlingen. We stayed at Charlie's House, a modern hotel with self check in and no soul. Dinner at the nearby Irish Pub.Les mer

  • Gutenstein

    12. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

It was raining steadily in the morning, but the radar looked promising so we waited it out. We had a long chat with Ron and Jan who were also waiting for the rain to stop before continuing the Eurovelo 6 towards Basel. We got away about midday, and it was a beautiful afternoon and a beautiful stretch of the Donau.
We stayed at a very ordinary backpackers in Gutenstein and had dinner at a very good, if overpriced, German restaurant nearby.
Thinking of breakfast, and not wanting to give the backpackers owner any more of our money, Tracey asked at the restaurant where we could buy some milk (in a very small village at 8pm). They pointed us towards the fresh milk vending machine attached to the dairy farm next door!

  • Obermarchtal

    13. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A very nice day for riding. Our first stop was Sigmaringen for morning coffee and to get some rolls for lunch. A very picturesque town. After having a picnic lunch along the trail, our next stop was Riedlingen, another very picturesque town with an Italian "eiscafe" that made a very good iced coffee. The final downhill run towards our accommodation provided good views of Obermarchtal.
We stayed at Berghofstüble Obermarchtal, a nice guesthouse with a restaurant. Paying with a credit card, while accepted, seemed to cause the owner some degree of pain. Acceptance of credit cards in this part of Germany is very patchy.

  • Ulm

    15. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

One of Ulm's claims to fame is the enormous cathedral, which has the tallest church spire in the world, at 161.6m high. We have seen a lot of enormous and ornate cathedrals, but sometimes they contain interesting or unusual statutes and pictures. The six metre high statue of the Archangel Michael is controversial because, with it's sword brandished in a threatening manner, it was installed in 1934 by the National Socialist (Nazi) regime.
Ulm is the birthplace of Albert Einstein.

  • Höchstädt

    16. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

It was forecast to be pretty hot so we got an early start. Ulm is a city of 120,000, but early Sunday morning it was very quiet. Even the traffic lights were turned off, so we had a very easy exit from the city.
We arrived at our hotel in Höchstądt by mid afternoon, had a rest and a walk around the small town. Dinner in the hotel, schnitzel and potatoes, was quite good.

  • Neuburg

    17. juni 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Once again the forecast was hot so we got an early start. The highlight today was Donauwörth, where we arrived by morning tea (coffee & cake) time.
After Stepperg much of the bike path was closed, and the detours took us on a lot of gravel, up some extra hills, and quite a bit further. We found that if you stopped for a rest in the forest you were instantly set upon by hungry mosquitos.
Arriving in Neuburg hot and tired we went to the tourist info centre to find accommodation. They directed us to Gasthaus Zur Blauen Traube, basic but cheap and very central. Of course our room was up the flights of steps.
