We got the word late yesterday that due to excessive winds in the Beagle Channel that we would not be able to dock in Ushuaia. There was of course some disappointment around the ship, a little bit of grumbling from some people, but after we entered the Beagle Channel this morning, and passed by Ushuaia and experienced those winds, nobody is questioning the Captain’s decision. We hit winds of 65 knots

It is snark’n gnarly out there and getting our Pilot on Board was a bit of a sport’n adventureLeia mais

A Brief Cruising Moment Interlude

Our ship’s captain is Croatian and although his English is very good he has a distinct accent.

Every time he’s on the public address system giving updates on ships location, etc. and he refers to Punta Arenas, it sounds like he is saying “point at your anus”

Nancy gets Penguinized!

A catamaran trip to Magdelana Island to visit the Magellanic penguin breeding colony. About 7,500 breeding pairs, each normally with two chicks, return annually to breed and raise the next generation. The waters around the island are rich in sardines and we saw lots of whale spouts and dolphins and seals on the 1.5 hr trip to the island and the penguins have a great food source very close to their nests.

Most of these penguins are going through their annual moulting . . . growing a new set of feathers. It takes about 3 weeks and they are confined to land and don’t eat for the entire duration.

They make burrows in the soft ground and will live on the island for about 5 months to raise chicks. Then it is back to the ocean for the rest of the year.

After getting weathered out of seeing penguins at our Falkland Island port call, Nancy was a very happy girl at the end of this day😎Leia mais

Sea Day: Land of 1000 Waterfalls.

All day yesterday in the fog and clag we sailed out of the Magellan Straits and into the Chilean Fjord district. A moody, beautiful landscape.

Last night we attended a Captain’s Reception event, a very pleasant evening of music, canapés and socializing with fellow cruisers.

Puerto Chacabuco

One of the advantages of cruising in smaller ships is the ability to get into small remote ports the big cruise ships simply can’t use. This was the case visiting Puerto Chacabuco which gave us access to the small city of Coyhaique and the surrounding beautiful region.

Inland, the landscape transitions toward glaciated valleys and the Northern Patagonian Icefield. Overall, the area around Puerto Chacabuco is a beautiful and remote, very rugged and distinctly Patagonian region defined by water, forests, and glacier shaped mountains.

UNESCO Wooden Churches Day in Castro

After threading our way up a narrow channel lined with mile after mile of commercial mussel farm beds, we anchored in the harbour at the city of Castro on the island of Chiloe. We have definitely left the rugged glaciers and mountains of Patagonia behind.

The day was touring a series of UNESCO World Heritage churches built by local fishermen. Wood was the most available building material and they turned their boat building joinery skills into church construction . . . No nails used! Quite amazing buildings.

Some craft market shopping, a nice lunch and back on board to head north to warmer climes.Leia mais

Port Montt Chile wakes
Sunrise reveals volcanos
Mt. Fuji flashback

Sailed into a stunning sunrise early this morning to drop anchor in Puerto Montt. The large volcano at the city edge had a distinctly Mt. Fuji vibe

We are back in the Andes geologic section of Chile and had an excellent day visiting the Petrohue Waterfalls and the Osorno volcano.

Even had time for quick ice cream stop in the nice VaCay oriented town of Puerto Varas on the way home. Had a bit of a Penticton feel about it😎

Sea Day/Last Day/Packing Up Day/Suitcases Out Day tomorrow. The usual end of cruise ritual . . . The trip has just flashed by.Leia mais

Hallways full of bags.
Last meals with cruising friends
6500 nautical miles of wakes that disappeared behind us

Been a really great trip. A day in Santiago tomorrow, a very late departure and a long pair of flights home via Dallas puts us back in Yaletown for supper on Monday.

A long day of touring Santiago, then a loong 6 hrs at the airport waiting for a looooong 10 hour overnight flight to Dallas then a sorta longish 3.5 hour layover then a kinda maybe long 4.5 hour flight to Vancouver to end up with us back home in the Yaletown crib.

Time for a nap😎
