      Etapa 7: Alvaiázere

      January 12 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

In this town, I met another pilgrim from South Korea. His name is Lee and he brought wine and cheese and popcorn to share with everyone. He said he hadn’t seen any other pilgrims in 3 days so I think we was quite happy to have others around. We talked in the Alburgue quite late into the evening! Meeting people has been quite nice, but it’s been harder to keep up with this travel journal at night though. Lee doesn’t speak great English but really enjoys saying very humanist statements and seeing where that leads us like ‘I don’t think anyone is truly evil’ or ‘I think K-pop has unfair standards’. Margarida seems very interested in American politics but didn’t seem to want to ask me anything directly, so instead she asked me to describe what the American national identity is.

I enjoyed some Bifanas for dinner which is essentially pork and bread. It’s very filling but quite simple, so I added some cheese to mine!

      Etapa 8: Rabacal

      January 13 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Tonight’s Alburgue has been the nicest so far! True lux living! They have a pool out back and amazing have heat in the bedrooms for the winter which is super nice to have!

The owner of the Alburgue also owns a restaurant in the village and has a good deal for pilgrims. I had stingray for dinner. Very good but tons of bones which are supposedly edible but did not really felt that way. I dined and had good conversation with Lee and Margarida!Read more

      Day 10: Ansião to Rabaçal

      May 13, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Friday the 13th - what a lucky day.

We one again had the pleasure of Wil's company for the 19-km walk from Ansiao to Rabacal. Most of the walk was on country roads, gravel paths and tractor lanes, and there were some challenging ascents and descents. At one point, we passed by what looked like a water pump so Ernie decided to give it a crank, or rather many, many cranks. Just when we thought the pump must be out of order, a stream of cold water came gushing out.

Anita and Ernie are staying in Zambujal tonight but due to limited accommodations, I stopped in Rabacal. I'm actually staying in Chanca, a little town perched high on the hill 3 kilometres from Rabacal. Luckily, my amazing host, Paola offered to pick me up from Rabacal so I didn't have to hike up the steep hill in 31 degree sunshine. Her husband will drive me back to Rabacal tomorrow morning so I can continue my Camino journey.

Villa Chanca is a beautiful place to stay. The property has a pool, hammocks to relax in, a gorgeous garden with a fig tree, walnut tree, peach tree, wild loquats, wild strawberries and more. But as gorgeous as the property is, the best thing about Villa Chanca is the host. Paola offered me homemade vegetable & chickpea soup for dinner. I sat outside to eat and we chatted and shared stories like old friends. Her kindness was heartwarming and I am filled with gratitude on this lucky Friday the 13th.

Kilometres walked since Lisbon: 216. We are now approximately one third of the way to Santiago de Compostela

      Victor from Sintra

      May 8, 2021 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

This afternoon while checking my route at a crossing, Victor appeared next to me asking in perfect english whether I'm on the camino? We ended up chatting for half an hour. Victor is history professor at Sintra University and was visiting his mother in the region he was born. An incredible discussion ensued about covid as a curtain to cover up what is really going on in the world, the "Great reset". His knowledge about what is going on simultaneously in different countries of the world was incredible. In summary authoritarianism is back, religion is dying and being replaced by a technocratic world without values and human empathy. I was deeply impressed by the complexity of his thoughts and explanation and it keped my mind busy as I rode on.Read more
