• Going Birding ?

    September 27 in the United States ☀️ 63 °F

The plan for today was to drive 6 miles down the newly paved road just outside of the RV park to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to do birding. The weather had other plans. The sky was totally overcast and lightly raining off and on. So we had breakfast and relaxed in the motorhome. About 1:00 pm, as it hadn’t rain for few hours, We loaded up the jeep with dog, digital camera and the spotting scope headed to the Refuge. Google Maps had recommended road for tomorrow’s moving on trip to Winnamuca. No mention that after the refuge the road changed to graded gravel. We decided to recon the gravel road for tomorrow. It went on for 15 miles of washboard, not bad in the Jeep, motorhome will be a different matter. Jill went online to see what other information she could find about going to Winnamuca. ChatGP was very helpful, and definitely said not to go the way Google recommended!

We stopped back at the refuge and went through the little one room museum, full of stuffed bird and animals, We went to the gift shop, spent quite lot money there,(Christmas presents); at least we are supporting the friends of refuge. At the government visitor center we talk with a “employee.” She too was leaving tomorrow, so mostly talked about how to get to Winnamuca.

We saw rain in the distance but decided to chance it. Les unloaded the jogging stroller and was loading the equipment when started to rain… We returned to camp instead. Most of our birding was today was done through the front window of our RV. Oh yeah, the sky started to clear at dinner time. The refuge will have to wait for another trip.
