We are at the airport ready to board our non stop flight to London. Then came the Monsoon!!! Airport closed, our flight delayed over 3 hours. We still have a 10 hour trip but we should be able to sleep a few hours in our lie-flat seats.En savoir plus

A Day in Venice

We are having a great time in Venice before we board our ship on Tuesday. An over the top Italian meal/wine ending in a perfect dessert of a cannoli, gelato, and limoncello. Touring the beautiful Venice canals on the Vaporettos concentrating on areas not seen on previous visits. Yesterday it was the Jewish Ghetto with its elegant old Synagogues, Museum, and picturesque shops.En savoir plus

Another great day in Venice

Our Concierge gave us a tip about visiting the crowded Rialto Bridge area: The new department store located in the old post office had agreed to an open to the public rooftop terrace. It was an incredible viewing experience with few people. A side benefit were free clean toilets👍We revisited the San Marco area stopping by key sites and going into the Danieli Hotel, an old palace where we stayed before. We then walked less populated areas and viewed the last remaining Gondola repair/building yard. We became adapt at using the Vaporettos and did not miss scanning our fare card once (60€ fine payable on the spot).En savoir plus

After just 24 hours aboard we agree with Silversea's advertising that "She is Simply Devine". The decor is a combination of Art Deco, Contemporary, and Classic Elements.

Our suite is huge with beautiful finishes. We have 2 interactive TV's built into huge mirrors. The service is great and the food is over the top.

This truly will be a "rough" 51 days.En savoir plus

Martini Tasting

Today we went to a typical Silversea martini tasting in an intimate bar with great views. The martini's were accompanied by hors d' oeuvres. Rose's favorite was the pickle martini and Randy's was the peach. We will soon sail to Croatia.En savoir plus

Randy got a Croatian welcome as we left the ship for our tour. Hum dates back to 10th century and today has a population of 30 residents.

After walking the entire town (it took 20 minutes) we went to the only restaurant. We sampled local cheeses, wines👎, and a brandy made from mistletoe which was similar to grappa.En savoir plus

We took the tender in and had a wonderful private walking tour of Hvar. We saw the charming old town, the Piazza, the Arsenal, and a Franciscan monastery. Our local guide was an expert on the history, and customs of this beautiful city. He was also able to explain the background of the various architectural styles of the buildings.

In medieval times, Hvar (city) rose to importance within the Venetian Empire as a major naval base. Prosperity brought culture and the arts, with one of the first public theatres in Europe, nobles palaces and many fine communal buildings.

This port city ended up being a very pleasant surprise.En savoir plus

Dubrovnik was another tender port. It was very rough and caused a 3 foot difference between tender and ship. Luckily there were 4 crew members that literally carried you from ship to tender.

This is a beautiful city with fortress towers that curve around the tiny harbor, and a World Heritage Site.

We met our private tour guide at the dock. We walked old town with its square, narrow alleys, and a lot of steps. We then met our driver who drove us outside the city. We visited small villages, went to the top of a mountain for fantastic views and saw the Kupari Hotel ruins where the Yugoslavian army was bombed out.En savoir plus

Kotor could be the most beautiful location that we have ever visited. We went up to the very top of the mountain range over extremely narrow roads. We sampled local food at two different village restaurants and visited Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.En savoir plus

As we traveled to the mountain top village of Castelmola, we viewed the smoke coming from Mount Etna. We walked this extremely old village with its tiny houses then sampled almond liqueur and sponge cake.
We then went to Taormina and walked its narrow streets and piazzas. Our tour ended when we walked though the ancient Greco-Roman Theatre that is still used today.En savoir plus

Today we drove the entire Amalfi Coast. The narrow winding road offered magnificent views throughout. We stopped in the town of Amalfi to walk its streets, visit piazzas and have lunch.

We are on the island of Elba. Portoferraio is its main town. We walked uphill with a lot of steps and visited Napoleon's winter villa and garden.
Driving about 30 minutes across the island through farmlands and vineyards we arrived at Porto Azzurro. This seaside resort was very quiet with little traffic and few people. Quite a change from the last few ports.En savoir plus

We thought that the Leaning Tower of Pisa was going to be a tower by itself. Instead we were treated to 3 magnificent buildings located on the Square of Miracles: The Battistero (a Gothic baptistery), The Duomo (the Cathedral) and The Leaning Tower. The Leaning Tower was built as a bell tower for the Duomo in 1173. It is no longer in use as the vibrations from the bells could cause the tower to fallEn savoir plus

We met our guide for a private full day tour. Our itinerary included all the key sites in both Monaco and Nice: Driving on the Formula 1 track and Corniches, Casino Monte-Carlo, visiting the Palais du Prince, the Villa de Rothschild and the medieval, mountaintop village of Eze. In Nice we walked the Vieux Nice (old square and market). We saw a long line at a food stand and thought that it must be special. It was Socca, the local pan bagnat which was very good.En savoir plus

This small port on the French Riviera is known for its sea and sun. It has 32 private beach clubs and 75 public beaches. We drove on the vine road. They have been making wine in this area for centuries. Cork trees are native to St Tropez.
We visited two mid-evil villages from the 9th century, Gassin and Ramatuelle. They were built high in the mountains to protect their inhabitants against invaders.En savoir plus

Sanary is located in the Provence area of France. We started our tour by walking through the local market.
Castellet, a 950 year old hilltop village was our first stop.
We then went for wine and olive oil tasting at Domaine de Souviou. Some of the oldest vines and olive trees are in this area. We viewed a 1000 year old olive tree. Before leaving we purchased some Herb de Provence.En savoir plus

This was our second time in Barcelona. We first walked the La Rambla promenade with its live statues. This was the site of the terrorist attack just days earlier. Our private guide told us that it was quieter than usual with relatively empty cafes. We stopped to pay our respects at several memorials. They were very moving and emotional. The people of Barcelona say that they are "fearless" and terror will not win.
Our tour focused on Antoni Gaudi. We had seen La Sagrada Familia from the outside but going inside was amazing. Then we visited two other architectural marvels of his: The Park Guell community and the Le Pedrera apartments.
We learned so much about Gaudi and now understand his work. He was truly a genius far ahead of his time.En savoir plus

Today we walked Old Town in Valencia. We viewed the Cathedral, Palace and visited the huge Central Market. Also as you can see Rose was really able to get "in the picture" with a local character.

From the pier, we went to the boarding point for the panoramic elevator that took us to the highest point in Cartagena. We then visited the Old Quarter with its beautiful Art Nouveau town houses built in the late 19th and 20th centuries. From here we went to the Roman Theatre. Believe it or not the site was discovered in 1988. We went to a wonderful museum that allowed us to see how the Theatre looked in Roman times. The highlight, however is when you enter the theatre itself and you experience the enormity of the site. With all the Roman ruins we have visited this ancient Theatre ranks high on the list.En savoir plus
