Auch in Narbonne lässt es sich gut auf den Spuren Roms wandeln - wortwörtlich, denn auf dem zentralen Platz kann man rund zwei Meter zur alten Römerstrasse "Via Domitia" hinuntersteigen. Tatsächlich war Narbonne unter dem Namen "Narbo Martius" die erste von Rom gegründete Kolonie ausserhalb Italiens. Die zentrale Lage bescherte Narbonne jedoch auch eine wechselhafte Geschichte, so war gefühlt "jeder" mal da um die Stadt zu erobern.
Mir bleiben vorallem die unterirdischen, römischen Lagerräume in Erinnerung, welche erst im 19. Jahrhundert "wiederentdeckt" wurden. Bis dahin hatte die lokale Bevölkerung diese jedoch stehts als gratis Lagerraum benutzt - blöd, wenn das plötzlich jemand ausplaudert...

Narbonne is also a good place to follow in the footsteps of Rome - literally, as you can descend around two metres to the old Roman road "Via Domitia" in the central square. In fact, Narbonne was the first colony founded by Rome outside of Italy under the name "Narbo Martius". However, its central location also gave Narbonne a chequered history, so it feels like "everyone" was there to conquer the city at one time or another.
