Die Pont du Gard braucht wohl keine Vorstellung. Von den Römern vor rund 2000 Jahren erbaut, ist sie heute noch eines der bedeutendsten antiken Bauwerke des Landes. Während die Römer damit Wasser in in die Stadt Nîmes bringen wollten, wurde sie später als normaler Flussübergang benutzt. Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde während eines Krieges gar Artillerie darüber transportiert, was dann die Brücke definitiv in Mitleidenschaft zog. Zuletzt wurde sie bis ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein als reguläre Strassenbrücke verwendet. Umso erstaunlicher ist es also, dass sie bis heute überdauert hat. Ich habe grosse Zweifel, dass wir auch unseren modernen Gebäuden eine so lange Lebensdauer attestieren dürfen.

The Pont du Gard needs no introduction. Built by the Romans around 2000 years ago, it is still one of the most important ancient structures in the country. While the Romans wanted to use it to bring water to the city of Nîmes, it was later used as a normal river crossing. In the 17th century, artillery was even transported across it during a war, which definitely damaged the bridge. Finally, it was used as a regular road bridge until the 18th century. It is therefore all the more astonishing that it has survived to this day. I have great doubts that we can also attest to our modern buildings having such a long lifespan.Read more
