Nachdem ich die Nacht in einem ehemaligen Gefängnis verbracht habe, ist ein eben solches meine erste Anlaufstelle in Kingston, das Kingston Penitentiary - wenn auch dieses Mal nicht zum Übernachten. Es mag das "Heimweh" an mein Ottawa-Hostel sein, die mich antreibt - oder einfach die lange Geschichte des Ortes. Das Gefängnis wurde 2013 nach 178 Jahren geschlossen. Das Hochsicherheitsgefängnis ist also, gebaut 1835, älter als Kanada als eigenständiges Land. Es war somit auch einen Zeit lang die älteste noch in Betrieb stehende Vollzugsanstalt der Welt. Die Führung durch ehemalige Gefängniswärter ist sehr beeindruckend.
Weiter sieht man in Kingston eine alte Villa im italienischen Stil, in der der erste kanadische Premierminister, John MacDonald, eine Zeit lang gelebt hat und nun zu einem Museum umfunktioniert ist. Dazu gäbe es eigentlich noch ein bekanntes Fort aus dem Krieg von 1812, auf welches mir jedoch nur ein Aussenblick vergönnt ist, denn die Touristensaison ist im Oktober leider schon vorbei.

After spending the night in a former prison, this is my first port of call in Kingston, the Kingston Penitentiary - although not for an overnight stay this time. It may be the "homesickness" for my Ottawa hostel that drives me - or simply the long history of the place. The prison was closed in 2013 after 178 years. Built in 1835, the maximum security prison is therefore older than Canada as an independent country. For a time, it was also the oldest prison in the world still in operation. The guided tour by former prison officers is very impressive.
In Kingston you can also see an old Italian-style villa in which the first Canadian Prime Minister, John MacDonald, lived for a time and which has now been converted into a museum. There is also a well-known fort from the War of 1812, but I can only see it from the outside, as the tourist season is unfortunately already over in October.Читать далее
