Zurück in der Stadt stolpere ich mit einer Walking Tour durch die Stadt. Und stolpern trifft es, denn Mexico City sinkt jährlich um etwa 30cm - das jedoch nicht gleichmässig, was die Unebenheiten des Bodens verursacht. Sie ist damit eine der am schnellsten sinkenden Städte der Welt und lässt sogar Orte wie Venedig hinter sich. Eine der Ursachen ist, dass die Aztekenhauptstadt Tenochtitlan, welche die Spanier im frühen 16. Jahrhundert eroberten, auf einer Insel in einem See errichtet worden war. Der See, welcher etwa die Grösse des Kantons Zürich hatte, wurde von den Eroberern trockengelegt als sie an gleicher Stelle ihre neue Hauptstadt erbauten. Heute sinken die Quartiere auf dem ehemaligen Seegrund ein und die Übernutzung des Grundwassers tut das Übrige.
Zu sehen gibt es hingegen eine prachtvolle Altstadt, an dem sich eine schöne Fassade an die nächste reiht. Was für eine schöne Abwechslung zu Toronto. Zudem darf der Templo Mayor und die aus seinen Steinen erbaute Kathedrale nicht fehlen. Als kleine Stärkung zwischendurch gibt es dann Tacos al Pastor in einem von Hans empfohlenen Restaurant.

Back in the city, I stumble through the city on a walking tour. And stumble is the right word, because Mexico City sinks about 30 cm every year – but not evenly, which causes the unevenness of the ground. This makes it one of the fastest sinking cities in the world, leaving even places like Venice behind. One of the reasons for this is that the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, which was conquered by the Spanish in the early 16th century, was built on an island in a lake. The lake, which was about the size of the canton of Zurich, was drained by the conquerors when they built their new capital on the same site. Today, the neighbourhoods on the former lake bed are sinking, and the overuse of groundwater is doing the rest.
On the other hand, there is a magnificent old town to see, with one beautiful façade after another. What a nice change from Toronto. In addition, the Templo Mayor and the cathedral built from its stones are not to be missed. For a little refreshment in between, I have tacos al pastor in a restaurant recommended by Hans.Read more
