Ist es von den Azteken? Von den Maya? Weder noch, Monte Alban war die Hauptstadt der Zapteken, also eines Volkes, das immernoch in der Umgebung Oaxacas lebt und wir mit unserem Verständnis von Lateinamerikas indigener Bevölkerung (oft denken wir an Azteken, Inka und Maya) meistens vergessen. Generell gilt: ist es eine sichtbare Ruinenstadt, ist es meist nicht von den Azteken.
Was euch dieses Wissen nützt? Keine Ahnung aber ihr seid top vorbereitet, wenn das nächste Mal historische Stätten mesoamerikanischer Kulturen beim Smalltalk aufkommen.
Ich konnte als selbsternannter Ruinenenthusiast natürlich nicht widerstehen und musste mir das ansehen. Also falls ihr mich sucht: Ich laufe mal wieder mit leuchtenden Augen zwischen alten Steinen herum.

Is it Aztec? Mayan? Neither. Monte Alban was the capital of the Zapotecs, a people who still live in the Oaxaca region and are often overlooked in our understanding of Latin America's indigenous populations (we tend to think of the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans). As a general rule, if it's a visible ruined city, it's usually not Aztec.
How is this knowledge useful to you? No idea, but you'll be well prepared the next time historical sites of Mesoamerican cultures come up in small talk.
