  • Exploring and Punanga Nui Market

    August 7, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

First day out and about so after a nice "Island Buffet " brekkie we hop the bus and go see the Punanga Nui weekly market. Local produce, crafts and souvenirs mainly. Checked out "town" ... back to our room then sorted snorkeling gear for the week. Took our first dip in the lagoon not as warm as we expected but nice anyway. Drinks, dinner and day 1 is done. Super relaxing and friendly place...Read more

  • A long trip for lunch!

    August 8, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After brekkie we caught the "clockwise" bus and travelled an hour and about 25km to see Maire Nui gardens which was just 5km in the anti clockwise direction ... ah, island time! Gardens lush but in need of a lot of care .. the cafe we thought would be nice for lunch was closed so we walked another 3km anti clockwise to a cafe...! Then missed the next bus by 2 mins as we finished lunch and waited an hour for the next one. All up 5 hrs out and about for an average lunch ... but hey, we're on holiday - who cares?Read more

  • Highland Paradise cultural tour

    August 9, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After a lovely warm day relaxing - with a side of snorkeling and beaching - we were picked up for an evening out at one of the local cultural experiences. The most authentic according to several locals. Very well done, most hospitable and meaningful. After being picked up at our hotel, we drove halfway up the mountain to the reinvigorated meeting place of a family descended from one of the original island chiefs. We are treated to a traditional welcome, our bus "chief's" fruit basket offering was accepted and we were shown the ancient marae the view and regaled with wondrous tales of war and peace. The marae is not at all like a NZ marae in appearance, but equally significant. Followed by an umu feast, wonderful "dinner music" and of course, a dance show. Great humor throughout, beautiful singing and dancing. A top notch evening! Notably, no poi used in the dances. Where did NZ Māori pick that up I wonder...Read more

  • The Great Migration departure point

    August 10, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Departure point for the Great Migration circa 1350CE to NZ. Seven vaka, "canoes", sailed out through this inlet as the local Māori set forth in the search for new lands, likely not on the same day as each "canoe" may have been a flotilla of many actual double hulled boats. The vaka Aotea landed in Auckland. Takitumu at East Cape, Mataatua in Whakatane, Arava in Maketu, Tainui eventually landed at Kawhia, Tokomaru vaka at Whangaparaoa and Kuraaupo near North Cape. The Rarotonga legends vary a bit from NZ Māori versions but it's clear a large migration did leave from here for NZ around 1350.Read more

  • Arai-te-Tonga

    August 10, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

The remains of an ancient court of justice. Accessed by the surrounding 7 or 8 tribes there were stone seats for a representative from each. Judgement was passed here and punishments meted out. Severe crimes received severe punishment (adultery resulted in him being assigned the front line in the next battle, where death was likely, and her being stoned to death and eaten...). Times have changed...Read more

  • Safari Tour into a Caldera

    August 10, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We took a Safari tour today which is how we saw the other footprints, too ... our tour guide was a hoot, but knowledgeable and entertaining. The cross country part of the tour meant holding onto rails as our jeep bounced and climbed ever steeper tracks and paths until we burst out onto the top of a grassy ridge where we can see we are in the centre of a huge volcano caldera. Maybe 3km wide at the top...? Luckily there's a telephone tree for those who need to call home. Some old volcanic plus remain, notably "the needle" kindly left for photo ops. Great views out to sea.Read more

  • Bit of a washout!

    August 12, 2021 in Cook Islands ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

A second day raining but we set off by bus anyway. Richard takes pics of grave headstones and there are 3 requested for a Cemetery in "town" (Avarua...). The plan is take the pics between showers, find a nice place for lunch, head home in the afternoon. However, mother nature has other plans, the squall turns into a mini-cyclone and hits as we are still looking for the last 2 graves. We took shelter in the church entrance and waited. A hour later it was pelting down harder and harder, wind was up around 60-70 kmh. At 2.30 we made a dash for "The Café" across the road with lunch in mind only to be told it closes at 3pm and the kitchen has already closed. Next bus was due 3pm so after a very (!) strong coffee we waited in the rain until the bus arrived nearly 20 min late. Two bedraggled rats finally made it home at 4pm, drenched, no lunch, only 1 of 3 headstone photos ... but still smiling. Until we entered our room to find the rain had blown into our room under the 3m overhang and flooded the floor. But even that couldn't make it a bad day. This is, after all, a vacation we'll remember!
P.S. overnight the sea surged and nearly every ground floor unit had the sea come right on it at 2am. 5 broken windows around the resort, clean up crews out and guests being shuffled to new rooms. We are up a floor where the view remains great!
