Base for a few nights. A very well maintained DOC campground right on the water's edge. Bit of a drama getting familiar with the DOC online system but seems we now have a 12 month pass ... yay.

Into Picton today as ferry arrived late yesterday. Very scenic drive getting there. Looking out unto Queen Charlotte Sound...
Richard n Sheila Travels Waimahara Wharf, Shakespeare Bay. Timber out ... looks like pines that were growing among native bush. some areas appear to be killing pines while still standing - dead brown needles in large batches.

Edwin Fox preservation project

Edwin Fox lays claim to a string of astounding facts:
- oldest merchant ship in the world
- 9th oldest ship in the world
- built 1853
- only surviving Australian convict ship out of 1040 ships
- oldest surviving NZ immigrant ship
- carried troops to the Crimean War

Walked the ship hulk where the construction was self evident. This thing is huge compared to other old wooden sea-going ships we've seen. Columbus' Santa Maria seemed small by comparison.Read more

Pelorus Mail Boat tour

Booked our tix, packed our lunch and had a lovely day on the water. Levon is as much a comedic entertainer as a skilled pilot. Run by Marlborough Tours who have the contract with NZ Post for mail delivery, the boat stops in on a dozen hardy Sounds residents just once a week. There is a guy who runs an online shoe business, so he has big deliveries and shipments every time! At another stop, 5th generation sheep farmers are holding on tenaciously and another is/was a popular BnB. We drop off a young couple who are to spend a few weeks in their granddad's cottage. Some stops don't even touch land - two mail bags, one to and one from, pass each other mid-air across a meter or two of water! See other Footprints for a sample of the stops. 5th generation sheep farmers offered a great tour. Doing it tough with the possum fur industry worth more to them than 2000 head of sheep, plus the loss of most of their cattle to poachers from the next door farm.Read more

Greenacres Golf Club

A great place to set up the whare. Sheila had a couple rounds of golf and that means we can stay free. No power but toilets showers water and a nice cafe are all part of the deal.
Some of the LOTR movie was shot next door to here - some very unusual reed islands on the tidal flats. Pics coming...

Pic's Peanut Butter Tour

One cannot visit Nelson and not go see where Pics comes from! What an interesting man Pic is and what an interesting visit. It all started in a stainless steel concrete mixer in his garage.
We were stunned to learn that 70% of US homes have a jar of Pics in the cupboard but only 49% of NZ homes have one! Maybe our jars are the buckets 😁

Small but nice japanese style garden to cement a sister city relationship between Nelson and Miyazu. Has a ton of potential but needs a step up in maintenance. Rubbish in a lake, lots of dead and dying to trim and remove etc. Amazing how tranquil a japanese garden feels as soon as one enters...Read more

Natural springs with ultra clear water. A nice 60 min walk through bush, over streams and small bridges, with some spectacular views from the viewing platform hanging over the main springs.

Wildcat Charters Fishing

7am departure from Pōhara dock with Captain Leigh ... just about sunrise. Fantastic day out on the briny catching snapper, terakihi, blue cod, gurnard, leatherjacket, wrasse, mackerel and a barracuda Nicely fileted by Capt Leigh and we brought home bags of fresh fish. Lucky there is room in the caravan freezer!
Catching our fill early left time to call in to some historic coast ... like Murderers Bay where Able Tasman first set foot on NZ land about 1642 - the first known European to touch NZ soil. He engaged with local Māori but not a great accomplishment, with deaths of both sides. Also stopped right adjacent to where a Pā had been in what is now Abel Tasman Park.
Back at the dock, some large stingrays came looking for a few morsels.Read more

An outcrop of limestone rocks with paths in all directions. Thank goodness for the map! Spent about an hour exploring partly accompanied by a very friendly piwakawaka who would land only inches from us. Several rock forms had names based on what they looked like ... e.g. the glacier, water slide ...Read more

A stop near the top of Tākaka Hill on our way to next destination. We took the tour and learned much about how the caves were formed, what had been discovered so far, including many moa skeletons. One stallactite has been signed by numerous explorers, one of the oldest dated 1876!

Fuel for the truck (diesel $2.739 / litre) and the travellers! Zen kitchen much more affordable than half a tank of diesel (the very day fuel prices made top of the news and Ardern said there's no cost of living crisis. At these prices we might not be able to get home for a decade or two!Read more

Sand flies like jumbo jets but a lovely peaceful area right on top of the branch in the alps fault line.
