Atty the dog found me on the trail and we quickly became good buddies. I was open to the idea of him walking with me all the way home and quickly formed a bond. After a couple hours we met a dog momma who knew of a friendly shelter nearby. Since his family might have been looking for him it felt irresponsible to keep him with me. I shed a few tears saying goodbye. 1/4 way for many but less for me!En savoir plus

Tennessee, 90 miles in 3 days

I was pushing hard on my final days in Tennessee. 90 miles in 3 days. 40 miles on the last day. My mind was up for the challenge but my body is still recovering many days later 🤪.

Trail Magic abounds

One of the most special surprises of the Appalachian trail so far has been the presence of “Trail Magic”. Hikers from previous years or local folks setup little (sometimes big) stations at road crossings with all sorts of goodies to keep us smiling down the trail. Often these angels are cooking up burgers or pancakes and have an assortment of snacks, fresh fruit, and hot/cold drinks. They offer it all up for free and are rewarded with so many smiles and super grateful through hikers. The following photos represent less than half of the trail magicians that I have come across. Dragon's Tooth

I climbed the Dragon’s tooth and watched 4ft King snakes have sex in a 300yr old oak tree. A weeks worth of tasty food thanks to a friend and a hiker box (piles of food/gear and very random stuff that hikers leave behind at every hostel/outfitter store).En savoir plus

Great Newts!

So many Eastern Newts (salamanders) everywhere on the trail. I move them to the side because they are so slow and likely to get stepped on. I got stung by a bee the other day and got itchy hives all over, even my ears. Thankfully some hikers ahead on the trail had some Benadryl for some rapid relief before it got too uncomfortable. My first time having a reaction like that and taking Benadryl. More trail magic!En savoir plus

For 99.999 % of our species time on this planet we’ve been walking through the forests. It’s been painful but wonderful to get back to my roots. It doesn’t get much better than waking to birdsong, drinking spring water all day, and walking through the woods. Love this trail.En savoir plus
