    Flippin heck I stayed up!

    After a nice night in the diamond lounge, the girls decided to go and see the show.
    I said that I would finish my drink and take Joe back to the cabin. But after they'd gone I decided to go and have a look at the show myself. Having Joe in the pram, I would stand at the back and if I didn't like it, I could leave without disturbing anyone.
    Anyway it turned out that the act was a guy I'd seen before. He is a violinist called Gary Lovini, he once won "Britainsgottalentintheirxfactoreyes" or something similar about 20 years ago. Long before Simon Cowell had been heard of.
    He is a very talented violinist, and proves the point that if you have got real talent you can make a good living in showbiz.
    The 45 minute spot flew by, as he played something for literally everyone.
    He's one of those acts where people look at the theatre listing for the evening show and see "violinist" and think, I'll not bother as I don't fancy sitting through an hour of violin music, then spend all the next day regretting not going, as everyone who did tells them how good he was. So folks remember the name Gary Lovini, he's well worth a watch.    もっと詳しく

    It was a fairly uneventful drive down, except for Joe throwing up somewhere on the M40, where we had to pull in to the services and wash him and his seat down. The panic started when we got on the ship, and couldn't find my rucksack. Which not only had the passports and tabs, chargers, etc. Also had all of mine and Sheilas medication in. We had come through security and stopped to have a group boarding photo taken. We then boarded the ship and headed straight for the cabins. That's when we noticed that the bag was missing. I was up and down to check in, and guest services asking everyone if they'd seen the bag, with no luck at all. Then Sheila said did you check at security? No I hadn't! I was off like a greyhound, well ok, I dad ran down to security, I must have looked like a demented Mr Bean.

    Conclusions

    Overall this was one of the best cruises we've been on.
    The four days in Dubai with Maz and Sue were once again brilliant.
    Just the same as two years ago they were the perfect hosts, sometimes too perfect lol.
    I had to fight Maz to allow me to pay for anything, he did conceded once or twice, but under duress lol.
    Sue explained that it was the Arab way, not letting guests pay for anything when visiting their home.
    As for the cruise, I really enjoyed it, the fact that we hadn't done a cruise for six months probably helped as last year we did to many all very close together and we were cruised out.
    Also the new ship helped, as it's totally different from any other Royal Caribbean ship, especially in the layout, it was a very tranquil ship, nobody seemed to be rushing around and the whole atmosphere was sort of calm.
    Even the artwork was themed to be calming and reflective.
    As for the staff, we only had a problem with one of them, that was a guy in future cruises, everyone else was brilliant.
    The Captain was one of the best I've met, and definitely the most visible, we saw him all over the ship.
    He came up to the concierge lounge about 10 times during the trip, and covered the whole room each time, speaking to everyone.
    For the first time in ages we used the restaurants on board and not just the Windjammer, giving the dynamic dining a fair try, and I must say we where pleasantly surprised, it seemed to work perfectly.
    We tried most of the free restaurants the best of which imho was Chic, and two of the pay restaurants the best of which was Jamies Italian restaurant.
    The concierge lounge and diamond lounge where both nice if a bit small, considering the amount of diamond and above passengers on Royal ships these days.
    The diamond lounge at least is situated in a place where it is able to allow an overflow. The concierge lounge is situated right at the back of the ship, where it has beautiful views of the seas but no overflow availability.
    The entertainment on board was excellent and the cabaret lounge, which is called Two70, is beautiful and puts on AMAZING shows the one we saw was called Starwater.
    The lounge itself is very high tech with huge video projection screens, and robotics.
    One sad thing about the entertainment on our trip was that there was no Broadway show as Mama Mia had been taken off and nothing replaced it, to be fair we where informed of this and compensated for it.
    But it was still a disappointment.
    One show in the theatre that we missed was Sonic Odyssey and it got rave reviews from everyone who saw it, so not missing that one next time.
    Other entertainment which we didn't actually try but looked brilliant included, the Seaplex,, which has Bumper Cars, XBox room, table tennis, indoor basketball / football court, which converts into a roller rink complete with disco lights.
    Outside is the usual rock climbing walls, and Flow Rider, one great addition is the IFly, which is a skydiving simulator where you actually skydive in a big glass tube.
    Also there is the North Star which is basically a giant glass pod on the end do of a huge crane, that gives you amazing views of the ship and the sea, or the port if you're in Port.
    There are lots of other things to do, to many to mention here.
    Overall I'd score the Quantum of the seas 8 out of 10.    もっと詳しく

    Dubai, Waffi Gourmet

    Last night Maz arranged for us all to have a meal at Waffi Gourmet as his daughter Reima and son in law Hussam were going to be in Dubai overnight on business.
    We'd been to Waffi before with Maz so we knew that the food is good, and this time was no different.
    As last time we left the ordering to Maz, and he didn't let us down.
    The starters were typically Arabic with lots of dips, salads, falafel and freshly squeezed juices.
    At an Arabic meal you eat warm pitta type bread with the starters, which is replaced regularly when it cools.
    Then came two massive plates of lamb chops, and chicken which had been marinated in yogurt and spices.
    It was amazing, especially the lamb, which was also marinated in something then cooked on a griddle.
    Reima and Hussam where lovely and it was nice to put a person to the Facebook profile.    もっと詳しく

    Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Mosque

    After we'd seen the hotel, as I said we went to Starbucks in the local mall for a coffee.
    We then headed for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
    Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure which unites the cultural diversity of Islamic world, the historical and modern values of architecture and art.
    His final resting place is located on the grounds beside the same mosque.
    The mosque was constructed from 1996 to 2007.
    It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates.

    That's the official bit, on a more general level, the Mosque is an amazing piece of architecture.
    As with the Emirates Palace Hotel being one of the best hotels I've seen. I've also seen quite a few mosques in my time, and seriously this is definitely one of the most beautiful.

    Although very beautiful and traditional it also has quite a modern feel to it, this may be due to the electric prayer clock, or the cooling fans discreetly hidden in the four legged pillar sections that hold the place up, or maybe it's the gold chandeliers with the quite modern multicoloured cut glass droplets dangling from the centre.
    Either way it's a very beautiful Mosque.
    One last thing I want to mention is the marble inlay work that adorns the whole place, looking closely at it, you realise it can only have been done by hand.
    You can then understand why this mosque cost over half a billion dollars to construct.

    As I've said many many, times before to the people who know me, I'm not at all religious these days, but I can appreciate the architecture of all churches etc, and this mosque is definitely among the best and most beautiful places of worship I've ever seen.

    Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace Hotel

    Yesterday Maz took us all for a drive to Abu Dhabi, the temperature was 46°c, so thank god for air conditioning in the car, which btw is a Porche Caynne, so we travelled in style.
    We passed through a town called Jebel Ali, which is 35km southwest of Dubai city.
    As well as being the 9th busiest port in the world, is a tax free industrial zone.
    In 1985, the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) was established.
    Jafza, an industrial area surrounding the port, allows the international companies who relocate there to enjoy the special privileges of the free zone.
    These include exemption from corporate tax for fifteen years, no personal income tax, no import or export duties, no restriction on currency, and easy labour recruitment.
    This came as a big surprise to me, as I thought that Dubai had no real industry and was just a tourist destination.
    Anyway the drive to Abu Dhabi took just over an hour as the road is a 4 lane highway and virtually straight as a die.
    On the way we passed the strangest office block I've ever seen, it is completely circular and looks like a giant Frisbee stood on end. It's about as thick as a Frisbee too, very strange.
    We headed to the world famous 7 star hotel The Emirates Palace, and it is just about the most beautiful hotel I've seen. We headed straight to the "Gold to Go" vending machine where you can literally buy small gold ingots from a vending machine!
    I checked out the afternoon tea menu, and a cup of tea and a piece of cake would set you back £52 each. The cake does have a small piece of real gold leaf on top, but we gave that one a swerver and went to Starbucks in the local mall instead, lol.
    But it is interesting to see how the other half live.
    The dining area where you have afternoon tea is really beautiful and sumptuous and a violinist and pianist entertain the diners, so all joking aside apart from the price it would be a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake.    もっと詳しく

    Fame at last, well sort of.

    Sue and Maz had a meal with the Captain the other day, and during the meal, Sue told the Captain my old joke about the Somali pirates.
    The one about the safest place on the ship if the pirates get on board, being the concierge lounge, as the pirates would be first time cruisers and not have a card to get in.
    Later on that night the Captain came to the concierge lounge just for a chat with people, and Sue told him that the joke she told him was mine.
    The Captain does no more than ask if he can use it sometime.
    So obviously I say yes of course.
    Well at the end of the next days security announcement he actually used the joke, I was gob smacked, as I didn't actually think he would.
    The only thing is that only a couple of people know that the joke was mine, so it's not really fame at last... Just sort of... Lol    もっと詳しく

    Three people were picked up by the Omani coast guard and taken to hospital.
    Their luggage was sent with them so it looks like they are staying for a while.
    At least they will get medical treatment, I've heard that the Oman medical system is one of the best in the Middle east so hopefully they will be ok, but we'll have no way of finding out.

    Will I never learn

    Well Saturday morning started as normal having breakfast with Sheila, Sue and Maz.
    Then at 12.15pm we had our lunch with an officer, which is one of the diamond plus benefits when you reach 350+ cruise points, there where five or six tables with six or so passengers to each table, we had Ken Rush, the cruise director and a junior officer on our table.
    The meal and the company where excellent, the problem was, well I should say my problem was, the wine, it flowed very freely, and it would have been rude to refuse. Lol.
    Anyway almost immediately after the meal, a group of us went up to the concierge lounge to set up a small party for Doreen and Eric, two friends of ours who turned pinnacle on this cruise.
    And of course we all brought a bottle of wine, it would have been rude not to, lol.
    Well by the time the party finished, it was 4.30pm.
    Just enough time time to clear every thing away ready for the 5pm drinks.
    When Ike the waiter came around for the order, I ordered another glass of wine, it would have been rude not to.
    Btw, can you see a pattern appearing here? Lol.
    8.30pm and we're all booked in the Grand restaurant for dinner, and once again
    We had wine with the meal, needless to say, I don't remember going to bed.
    So for the following two days Sheila and I both abstained from alcohol, and on the first day we only left the cabin to grab some food on a couple of occasions.

    Operation Safe Haven

    Today at 10.30am we are having the "pirate drill" to get everyone ready for our transit through bandit country in two days time.
    We already have a security force of about 15 to 20 ex marines on board, they came on in Aqaba, although they will have no real security duties to do until we turn in to the Arabian sea where the possibility of pirates exists.

    Another nice resturant

    Last night six of us booked in to the Chic restaurant, and the meal was excellent.
    I've come to the conclusion that I actually like this Dynamic Dining.
    Initially I thought you had to pre book all your meals before you boarded the ship,which is what all the advertising tells you.
    But the reality is that in most cases you can book on the same day that you want to go.
    Also with the variety of complementary restaurants to choose from, there is no real need to book any of the so called speciality restaurants which charge you a cover of between $30 and $45.
    As far as the formal nights go, there actually none, but some people still dress up in their tuxedos and evening dresses when dining and don't look out of place.
    So all in all Dynamic Dining is working, well for me anyway.    もっと詳しく

    Today we are docked in Aqaba, and most of the ship will probably be going to the ancient city of Petra.
    But with the temperature due to be in the 40s, I'll be giving that one a miss.
    Also the trip takes about 12 hours in total, and it's a lot of walking over quite rough terrain.
    Anyway if I do decide to get off the ship for a walk, Aqaba itself is quite nice, and there are some ancient ruins of the old town which you can visit and they've been quite well looked after and most importantly they are free of charge lol.    もっと詳しく

    Suez Canal

    Just started the Suez transit, it's 5.30am so we should be out the other end about 6.30pm. Then the next day we dock in Aqaba Jordan, after which we sail on to Dubai.
    Just before we pass between Aden and Somalia we will have the pirate drill, "Operation Safe Haven".
    Having done the trip a couple of times before we know that there is nothing to worry about, as we are to big, to fast and have to many people on board to be of any interest to the pirates. But there are a few passengers, mainly American who are a bit worried.
    We're the 3rd ship in the convoy of six ships in our time slot, and apparently the Egyptians charge by the tonnage and our cost is $500,000 and the other cargo ships look huge too so just for our one convoy they will make the best part of $3.000,000 not a bad little earner.    もっと詳しく

    Just Maz and I got off today just to stretch our legs.
    Didn't bother getting the bus to Athens as we'd both been before, anyway it was too hot.
    There was not a lot to see in Piraeus but we did find an impressive church, with beautiful painted ceilings, but as I said we only got off for a bit of exercise rather than the local culture. Yesterday was Christiane's birthday so six of us had booked Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurant last night to celebrate.
    I must say I was impressed with it, both the food and the service where excellent.
    Later we all went to the theatre to see a Motown and Soul group called Emperors of Soul, they were good considering that it was the late show and the theatre was half empty.
    After that it was off to bed, well I mean, it was 11.30pm! and for me nowadays that's LATE!    もっと詳しく

    Didn't get off in Naples either

    The weather wasn't up to much again today, so we stayed on the ship, been to Naples a few times before so not missing much.
    Had a good walk around the ship, and it's a beautiful ship.
    We went to look at the bumper cars, but didn't get to try them out, as that's one of the things being worked on.
    We were told in advance by RCL that a few things would be closed as they are getting the ship ready for China, we were all given $250 as compensation so that's fine.
    We did get to ride on the North Star, which was nice, you got brilliant views of Naples.
    Later on Sheila and I went to the American Icon restaurant for lunch, and we had one of the best burgers we've ever had, it was almost as good as my own home made burgers lol.    もっと詳しく

    Been here lots of times, and it's a lovely place but today the weather was crap, so we stayed on the ship.
    So I'm afraid there's nothing to report.
    Other than that we slept a lot in the Solarium.
    Tomorrow is Naples, so we might get off weather permitting.

    Devinly Decadence

    This is one of the free speciality restaurants and I must honestly say that the food was just about the best I've ever had on board ship.
    I had a sort of surf and turf, of filet mignon and crab cakes, with asparagus, broccoli and creamed potatoes.
    The crab cakes were delicious and the filet could be cut just by looking at it, it was that tender. Also the service was excellent with a friendly and very competent waiter.
    Along with great company it was a lovely evening.
    Also but they were there was a drunk American lady who was about 75 years old who kept coming across and telling us she was from Boston, she asked my name and when I said it was Dave, she kept doing part of the Cheech and Chong sketch, saying "hey man it's Dave I've got the stuff".

    The usual furniture removing

    Had a great night in the concierge lounge last night.
    With lots of old friends the company was so big we did our usual furniture removing getting chairs from all over the lounge.
    A quick name check, there was Egbert and Christiane, Larry and Phyllis, John and Janice, Eddie and Janice, another guy named Clyde and his wife whose name I've to my shame forgotten and of course Maz and Sue and Sheila and I.

    Quantum ots, first impressions

    Not really seen much of the ship yet, but first impressions are good.
    It really is different to other Royal ships, in layout and the atmosphere on board is different, it seems much more relaxed.
    The concierge and diamond lounges are both very nice and decent sizes, as with all ships if you where on a transatlantic crossing they would not be able to accommodate the large number of diamonds and above who travel on the transatlantic cruises.
    Also the concierge lounge is in a weird place right at the back of the ship, but the view is brilliant.    もっと詳しく

    Barcelona, Silken Diagonal Hotel

    The pre cruise hotel we stayed at was the Silken Diagonal and it was excellent, clean, friendly and very modern.
    The only thing I didn't like was that the bed was a bit hard, but everything else, especially the breakfast was top notch.
    We went for a walk in the afternoon and found a lovely little tapas bar called Lemoncello, where we had a drink.
    We ordered a couple of large beers for Maz and I and half a carafe of wine for Sue and Sheila, while we were chatting the chef sent across to us a small pizza for us to try, free of charge, which was a nice touch.
    The bill only came to €13 which for Barcelona we thought was excellent, so much so that we went back there in the evening for a meal and a few drinks.
    This time the owner sent across a round of shots free of charge.
    Well the girls didn't want them and Maz only wanted one, so as not to be rude I finished the other three, Needless to say I went straight to bed after the meal, not that I was drunk or anything!

    Manchester, Now that's a good deal

    Just got in the line for Monarch at Manchester airport, when one of the staff came up to us and said are we interested in extra leg room seat upgrades for £5 each?
    Well after we'd snatched his hand off, we found that he would check us in, so no queue and to top it all we get priority boarding!
    Best tenner I've ever spent lol.

    Officer visibility

    Quite simply on this ship there is none.
    The only time we saw the captain or his officers, be they senior or junior was at the welcome back party.
    The cruise director was only seen on stage or on TV on the morning show which was always filmed in his office never around the ship, which it is on other ships.
    Normally on a cruise one or two officers would come to the diamond and concierge lounges each evening to say hello and chat to the guests, not for long just maybe 20 to 30 minutes. But on this ship not once have we seen any officer.
    It seems like the company is just targeting first time cruisers on these big ships, the first timers are so in awe of the ship that the officers don't need to do any PR.
    I know that this will sound like sour grapes and moaning from me, but when you've shown loyalty to RCCL as all the diamonds and above have, it's annoying that your loyalty seems to be ignored.
    The company seem to think, that throwing a few free drinks at us is all that we "loyal" customers want or need.    もっと詳しく
