    MY FIRST BLOG POST

    December 6, 2019 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

    Hello and welcome,

I just arrived in Buenos Aires in the hostel, where I will live & work for the next months. I want to improve my Spanish, discover new cultures, meet new people and eat delicious new food!

I was looking for a way to share all my adventures, which inspired me to first start a blog online on blogger.com and later use this app findpenguins.

Unlike most Backpackers, I didn't want to travel from place to place but rather stay in one place for a longer time. So I started this trip with my beloved black suitcase with white dots. I had tried to pack my entire household into this 80-liter suitcase and quickly realized that it was not a good idea.

So I guess, I will have to buy a real trekking backpack. I will not change my plan and hike through Patagonia, however, I will be more flexible, spontaneous and hopefully take the stairs of my next hostel without any problems.

And who knows where I will work next time: in a hostel, in a school or on a farm...?

You are welcome to follow my personal travel diary and pick up some good tips for your next vacation.

So hello and welcome to my personal travel blog. :-)

  • Palermo Graffiti Tour

    December 16, 2019 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today I went to the free walking tour in Palermo with Viktoria from Germany. This tour talks about the various graffiti arts in Buenos Aires, specially in Palermo. 😎

The tour was really interesting, even tho I can’t remember all the names of the artists.
Some had a connection to famous people of Buenos Aires or just to the Tango. 💃

It was a nice walk through Palermo and see a different side of the city! 💜

  • NO HAY LUZ

    December 20, 2019 in Argentina ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

The first weeks were very calm in the hostel.
I was able to settle down without trouble and improve my Spanish skills enormously. I still make mistakes, have problems with numbers and time forms, but I can see progress. 😎
I met a lot of new people and visited many beautiful sights and tours.

Until a few days ago, construction work was taking place on our street Tucumán. Without warning, the electricity was turned off and we had no light and water.
It was only supposed to be for a few hours, but in Argentina, 2 hours can easily turn into 20 hours. 😩

At first, we had no restrictions. There was light during the day, all devices were charged and life went on normally. But during the next days, we had several power cuts and quickly realized how dependent you are on electricity and water. We got some water from the pipes or from a few large water tanks in the yard and the roof.

I rarely know something like that from Germany. In Venezuela that's commonplace, other volunteers told me.

Complaining doesn't help, so I learned to put up with it and make the best of it. Lamps with batteries were shared and we had a bucket of cold water ready for showering in the bathroom. Not a nice thought, but again very good on those hot days without air conditioning.

The supermarkets had enough water bottles and, unlike us, a power generator. Since yesterday the construction work is over, we have electricity again and everything was loaded right away. 😆

  • New Year in Buenos Aires

    December 31, 2019 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

It is New Year's Eve and I will celebrate it in Buenos Aires!!

First, we had Burgers and Hot Dogs together, afterwards around 11.45h, we walked to the harbor Puerto Madero together. We arrived just in time to be part of a big celebration there!

I tried to buy a drink last minute, but since there was only beer, I could only toast with the water I had brought with me.

Later we danced with the crowds on the street in front of the restaurants until the early hours, even though I had to get up in the morning because I had the morning shift.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020!!

  • A DREAM MADE OF CHEESE ...

    January 9, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

    We went out Thursday night.
Actually, we wanted to go to another restaurant, but then we got a recommendation for the Pizzeria El Cuartito. And who can say NO to pizza? 😋🍕

The Pizzeria is located in the street Talcahuano 937, close to the Plaza Libertad and next to the Avenia 9 de Julio. We walked there for about 15 minutes, through a hot Buenos Aires. The city is really beautiful at night, although it can be quite dangerous, depending on what part of the city you end up going to.

People here have late dinnertime, and so it's no exception that you see some of them on the street with their dog at midnight.
When we arrived at around 9.30 pm, the place was already full and we had to wait 20 minutes in line. We used this time to check the menu inside on the wall. They have all kinds of pizzas, lots of beers, less normal drinks but a large selection of desserts.

After we had a seat, we ordered directly and shared a big pizza with plenty of onions, ham, and the best part of it: looooots of cheese!

Even though I am not a fan of Fast Food, I have to say that this pizza is surprisingly delicious. I can totally recommend going to this Pizzeria. The price is expensive for a pizza but very good in terms of quality and quantity.
And I think the happy faces say it all. 😊

  • Sarkis & Rapanui

    January 10, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Today we went to have food at the Albanian restaurant called Sarkis. The first time that I took the public bus on my own! Exciting 😂

Marlou was already waiting for me with a French friend of hers. Fabri was stuck in an elevator at work and therefore arrived late and Lucas didn’t showed up at all -> Señor Nono 😜

We had to wait a while outside but then could go to our table. The food was really delicious and we shared different plates of Albanian food. 🤤

Afterwards we went to Rapanui, where they serve really delicious ice cream!! 🍦

  • We make a torta!! ❤️

    January 13, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Since we have this giant kitchen in the hostel, I always wanted to get creative and make a big cake alias torta! 😏

Today I went to the supermarket, bought all the ingredients (way too much) and „build“ this 6 layer torta with my dear friend Laura de Brazil. ❤️

We had so much fun and laughed a lot. I choosed a buttercream filling, together with regular marmalade. In the end we decorated the torta with a chocolate topping and fresh strawberries 🍓🍓

  • NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

    January 14, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

It has been raining all day, so we decided to go to the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires. It is located in the Avenida del Libertador 1473, close to the Recoleta Cemetery and the Floralis Generalis.

We bought our tickets for the Iguazú Falls today at the Retiro bus station, which is just around the corner and decided to walk to the museum. Almost impossible, since the sewage system in Buenos Aires is completely overwhelmed and the streets were partly completely underwater.
We arrived all soaking wet at the museum, but at least we didn't have to pay entry, because admission is free on Tuesday.

The museum itself is very modern, clean and bright. With a few exceptions, the rooms are generously divided.

It is considered as one of the most important public institutions of art in Argentina and includes more than 12.000 pieces of art. Of course, we couldn't see everything, not even the Norah Borges exhibition. But at least we managed to go through all the rooms on the two floors.

The artwork that I liked most is "Diane surprise" by Jules Joseph Lefebvre. The presentation of light and shadow, the bright bodies before the dark underground on a canvas of almost 3 x 4 meters – just impressive!
As I mentioned before, we are going to the Iguazú Falls on Thursday and we already saw a beautiful first impression here in the museum!

It is definitely worth visiting the museum, not just when it rains. And I hope to come back again soon. 😍

  • Iguazú Falls - Day 1 (Triple Frontera)

    January 17, 2020 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Marlou and I bought the bus tickets to Iguazu a few days before and thought we had made a good deal, because we had saved around 500 pesos per ticket. 😎

On the day of departure, the lady who sold us the tickets and another employee were waiting for us at the bus station. They wanted the money back because it was a mistake and they would have made a loss. 😵😰

We had no other choice, otherwise, we couldn't have taken the bus, so we paid.😠

We left in the evening and arrived in Puerto Iguazú around noon the next day, after almost 17 hours of driving. We had booked the Poramba hostel for the next few days, brought our things there and bought groceries.

Since it was too late for the parks, we went quickly into the pool and then walked in the evening to the Triple Frontera (Spanish for tri-border region or triple border). It is the border area between the three countries Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.

We took pictures, chilled a while and watched a little show before we walked back to the hostel.🥰

  • SUNDAY TRIP 1 (LUJÁN & BASILICA)

    January 19, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Our trip started very early on Sunday morning. Marlou and I were picked up by our friends Fabi and Lucas at 9.30 am. There was just enough time for a small breakfast and to quickly pack my bag.

Why do I always take so much stuff with me? 😆

We left Buenos Aires and drove about an hour west to the charming city of Luján, the most important place of pilgrimage in the country.

Many Argentine highways (autopistas) charge a toll fee. The price depends on the size of the vehicle. Payment can be made via an electronic card on the windshield or in cash. We paid in cash. The woman at the counter didn't look very friendly.

The city of Luján has just over 67,000 residents and is located in the flat pampa area on the Río Luján, which flows into the Río de la Plata at Tigre.

Like almost all tourists, we only came for the beautiful basilica of Luján. It was built between 1887 and 1930 and is the largest and most important building in the city.

In the middle of the huge forecourt is a monument dedicated to Manuel Belgrano, an Argentine lawyer, politician, and general. Among other things, he designed the Argentine flag.

A mass was just being held when we entered the basilica, which is even more beautiful inside.

Argentina has a lot of strays. I became particularly aware of this during our visit to the basilica, where many were sleeping on the cold floor, safe from the burning sun outside.

As far as I can tell, most of them are accepted and even fed from the local people. Some look like they actually have a home and a collar, others have wild fur and bad injuries. It always breaks my heart to see these poor little puppies. 😰

After we left the basilica, we walked to a nearby park. There wasn't much to see or do, so we went back to the car and drove to our next destination: the pulperia in San Antonio de Areco.

But I will tell you more about that in my next post, part 2 of our Sunday trip ...

  • SUNDAY TRIP 2 (SAN ANTONIO DE ARECO)

    January 19, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Hi and welcome back to the second part of my Sunday trip.

After we visited Luján and the beautiful basilica, we left the city and drove another hour north to the small town of San Antonio de Areco.

It was already lunchtime and we were almost starving. So we looked for a delicious place to eat and found it - Alquilo Casa - where they serve a typical Argentine Asado.

Asado means “grilled” and consists of meat - a lot of meat. I usually try to reduce my meat consumption, but if you want to get to know the kitchen in a foreign country, you have to make exceptions. In this case, a very tasty exception. 😋

There is barely any other country in the world where grilling is as passionate as in Argentina because the Asado is often organized as a gathering of the whole family or friends.

Especially in the pampa region, it is mostly beef that is grilled. In Patagonia, on the other hand, lamb is more popular because it is mainly sheep that are bred there.

We had cordero (lamb), vacio (the particularly tender and juicy meat between the rib and hip), pollo (chicken), chinchulín (beef intestine), chorizo (sausage), morcilla (blood sausage) and matambrito (the belly flap). I didn't like the blood sausage, but I found the lamb the most delicious. 😍

As a side dish, we had a simple salad, french fries, and the spicy chimichurri sauce, which consists of a spice mix in oil (usually paprika, parsley, pepper, and oregano).

After this delicious meal, we went into a large park across the street and had a siesta. The park was full of families picnicking in the afternoon sun and looking for a cool refreshment in a small lake. While the others were sleeping, I used the time and called my family in Germany.

After some time and cuddles later, we drove to the pulperia “La Blanqueada” and the museum “Gauchesco Ricardo Güiraldes”, both are also located in San Antonio de Areco. We were very short on time, so we rushed through the pulperia and unfortunately couldn't see the gaucho museum.

The “La Blanqueada” is an authentically restored grocery store with more than 150 years of life.

The museum, on the other hand, offers a look at the Argentine past that is linked to the life and customs of the gauchos, skilled horseman of the pampa. It opened 1938 and is named after Ricardo Güiraldes, author of the famous novel “Don Segundo Sombra”, about a gaucho.

Afterward, we drove downtown to the fancy restaurant Balthazar Areco to have some cake. I really liked this place. There are various offers of cakes and small treats. And don't we look happy - chocolate es solo amor. 💋

We ended this day in the small plaza “Ruiz De Arellano”, close by the restaurant. It was not as hot as during the day and we enjoyed the fresh air and peace.

And it was there where I saw a real hummingbird for the first time in my life!

Not deep in the South American jungle, no, right there in a little plaza in the middle of a town! He flew so quickly back and forth that it was not easy for me to film him. I tried my best (only my camera quality lets me down again - thanks). 🙈

I had an amazing day and I am looking forward to more trips with you guys!!! 😻

  • LA BOMBA DE TIEMPO

    January 20, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Marlou, Fabi and I finally had the possibility to go to “La Bomba de Tiempo” together.

Every Monday, the percussion group “La Bomba de Tiempo” plays a 2-hour show at the Cuidad Cultural Konex, which is located in the street Sarmiento 3131, in the Almagro district in Buenos Aires. Many buses stop outside, and the Carlos Gardel metro station (Line B) is just a 5-minute walk away.

We wanted to go there before, but all the tickets were already sold out. Therefore, we bought the tickets online this time and could walk straight past the long line.

A ticket costs 280 pesos (appr. 4,50 euros).

The doors open around 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm. We arrived around 7:30 pm and had enough time to look around. There is a large courtyard with a covered area for food and drinks. A fine mist was sprayed in the back area for refreshment.

Since I hadn't eaten anything for dinner yet, we went to the food corner, where I ordered a hot wrap for 200 pesos (appr. 3 euros) and a tequila sunrise for 250 pesos (appr. 3,80 euros). In addition to the diverse selection of drinks, they also offer a lot of food and the prices are fair for such a big event.
The wrap was tasty, but the cocktail tasted like sugar water with alcohol and I guess normal water would have been a better choice. 😖

More and more people entered. We were still in line waiting for the food when the show began. And it was amazing! We had so much fun: the music was mesmerizing, everyone danced, clapped and partied.

The concept of “La Bomba de Tiempo” was created in 2006 by artist Santiago Vazquez. He invited many of the best percussionists from Buenos Aires to help him create this amazing concept and ever since, added more and more artists from around Argentina.
Every show features a different guest who joins in the improvisation, ensuring a unique music experience each time.

When the show ended at 10 pm, the party continued on the street in front of the venue until we headed back to the hostel.

“La Bomba de Tiempo” is definitely a must-see in Buenos Aires and I would like to visit it again with my friend Sarah, who will visit me in less than three weeks. 💜

During the noon, I bought the gift for Lucas - a piece of the famous Oreo cake from Pani.
He was so happy and shared it even with us (sharing is caring). 😍
Then we went to Acatraz with Laura to eat there and to say goodbye to Marlou.

I hope to see you in another country one day, all the best on your next trip my dear !! 😘😘😘

  • CORREO ARGENTINO OR I' VE GOT MAIL!

    January 28, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

As I already wrote in my first post, I went to South America with an 80-liter suitcase full of more or less useless things. 😑

I quickly realized that I would need a lighter and easier way to travel because a heavy suitcase with wheels won't get me very far on this continent unless I am a tourist, taking a taxi from hotel to hotel.

So at the beginning of the year, I ordered a trekking backpack for women at an online shop of a well-known manufacturer of outdoor equipment in Austria. I asked for the exact cost (product + delivery) and was way below the prices of the local shops here in Buenos Aires. And I didn't want a cheap one from China.

Four days ago, when I was about to ask the shop for the status of the delivery, I received two letters from Correo Argentino, the Argentine post.
Both letters contained no company name, just many Spanish technical terms, and numbers. The only difference I could tell was the fact that one letter described a 3 kilograms heavy package and the other letter described a thermos bottle from China with a weight of 19 kilograms. 19 kilograms for a thermos bottle?

I asked Fabi for advice. He is Argentinian and one of the hostel's long-term residents. He told me that it is easier to go to the international post office in Buenos Aires and ask for the package directly.

So I went there after breakfast this morning at around 10 am, with both letters, my passport, water, and a book to have some entertainment while waiting.

The international post office, Correo International, is located on Avenida Ramos Mejía 1900, right next to the Retiro, the giant bus and train station of Buenos Aires. Not a safe corner, but no problem during daylight.

It is mainly just a large room consisting of 2 waiting areas and a smaller room behind a door guarded by a security guard. First, numbers were assigned - mine was 351 - and then I could sit down in the waiting area 1 to wait until I was called.

And that was incredibly fast - no joke! 😳
I showed the two letters, my identity card and explained my situation. Since I only bought the backpack, I rejected the other package with the “thermos bottle”, which will return to the sender now.

I received a paper, showed this to an employee in the smaller room, received a stamp and returned to the counter for payment. 190 pesos (appr. 2.87 euros) poorer, I got an invoice with a 10-digit number. With this number, I went to waiting area 2.

And there I had to wait.

    More than 90 minutes ...
All the other people could pick up their packages, even those who came after me.

Finally, my number was displayed on the screen and I could enter the smaller room to pick up my package. One signature later, I walked out of the post office with my new travel backpack! 💜

Carrying 3 kilograms for almost 20 minutes back to the hostel is not that easy, but I felt full of the joys of spring.

First of all, of course, I had to open the package, try on my new beautiful backpack and show it to everyone at the hostel. 😜

  • Palacio de las Aguas Corrientes

    January 29, 2020 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Yesterday morning Eske, Laura and I went to the Water Company Palace. We walked down the Avenida Córdoba for about 35 minutes and crossed the big Avenida 9 de Julio halfway.

Opened in 1894, the “Palacio de las Aguas Corrientes” is one of the most beautiful buildings in Buenos Aires. Covered with 300 thousand pieces of terracotta brought from Great Britain, it stores in its interior, a huge iron structure made in Belgium.

Today it's a National Historic Landmark and the seat of AySA (Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos S.A.), an Argentine company dedicated to the supply of running water and wastewater, holding more than 72 million liters of water for the City's supply.

We underestimated the time to get there and arrived late, which turned out to be a stroke of luck since many people showed up and the tour was overcrowded. The museum holds a large collection of historical books about water network supply, drains, pipes and water-based projects.

With the exception of a huge toilet collection, which turns out to be very funny for photos, the exhibition about the palace is rather boring. There is currently a very nice exhibition of Edgardo Nelson Rodriguez with giant creatures made of plastic bottles, that wants to draw attention to the tons of plastic bottles in the oceans and the problems it causes.

Eske, Laura and I went to the Museum Casa Rosada. It is on the right side of the Casa Rosada, the palace of the president of Argentina.

The museum has many items from previous presidents, as well as the history of Casa Rosada itself.

First, we had to go through a small entrance control, then we were able to look around the entire area. Some stuff was boring, other things were interesting. Especially the old cars were really fancy.

Thanks for the day, girls! :-)

More than 270 stands sell their products, mainly food, art, antiques and souvenirs. 😎

We went there around 10.30h and stayed for 2 hours until we had to leave to go to the afternoon free walking tour.

We tried a food called Salchipan (salchichas = sausage + pan = bread) 😋

Now there are many restaurants and bars, and I spend new year together with the other volunteers here! 🥳

As a little surprise, she bought me a orio cookie chocolate drink! 😉✌️

We walked on one side and crossed the harbour on the famous bridge „Puente De La Mujer“.
That bridge is 335m long and has a flexible part that is movable (which we did not see). 🤓

The weather was nice and we set down a while and relaxed before we walked back to the hostel.

  • Avellaneda & Tango Show

Last week, we booked a Tango Show for today.
So Sarah & I met a little bit earlier to arrive on time ... in the end we arrived like 3 hours to early! 😂
The tango show at Señor Tango is in the district Abellaneda (and not really a safe place at night).
First we went for a walk, then we decided to return to a little park next to the bus stop and sit for a while.
After some time, we walked to find a place to eat. Turned out all the restaurants were closed or had a bad reputation online, so we walked like a hour to find the Cafe Martinez 😋
Since it was already dark and even the waitress recommended us NOT to walk, we took a Uber for only 100 pesos ... smart decision 😉
The show was amazing, a little bit kitschy (with horses and a Evita song etc.) but the tango dances so beautiful!! 😍
I will not talk about how we tried to find a bus stop close to the show, in the middle of the night, in some creepy street in Buenos Aires - South America - but we survived! 💪
