  • Derby

    9–11 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We spent 2 nights here. An interesting town if you are into Mountain Biking. I think we were the only people here without one.

Still a very pretty spot. Was fun watching the bikers wizzing around.
There is a floating sauna, lots of bike shops. Some nice tracks for walking and bikes.

Didn't have a general store so had to go to the next town for bread and milk. Did find out later while exploring the post office sells milk, bread & eggs.

    10 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

A rainy day. Did the short drive to see the magnificent tree carvings.

The trees were planted to remember the local men that did not return from WW1. As there grow bigger the council deemed them a hazard and were going to cut them down. The towns people banded together to fund raise. They employed a chainsaw carver to turn the trees into these beautiful statues.

The carvings represent the men and their lives before the war.

  • Scottsdale

    11–12 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We just stayed overnight at Scottsdale. They had a lovely free camp area. With water connections for your vans. Nice longer hot showers. But you couldn't use your generator. So with the weather being so overcast, we couldn't charge the van battery with solar.Baca selengkapnya

  • Mike & Annies Front Paddock

    12–16 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We ended up spending 4 nights here. Just out of Launceston.
The farm dogs were regular visited. Was a lovely big flat grassy paddock. Plenty of room to spread out. Mike was very friendly. Didn't meet Annie.

Was a great jump off point to visit Beaconsfield, Ben Lomand, and other local spots. Including the Berry farm we discovered last time we were here.

Graham explored the now closed mine site at Beaconsfield. I imagine we all remembered when the miner were trapped after the mine collapse. I stayed safe and dry in the car. Had a return of my breathing problems overnight. Thought it best to stay warm and dry.

  • Ben Lomand

    14 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

My birthday treat was a drive up to Ben Lomand. Have been looking forward to visiting. Unfortunately, there was no snow, but the veiws didn't disappointed. Driving up the switchbacks of Jacobs Ladder was fun. Not as bad as some make out.

We called into Base Camp for my birthday lunch. Excellent pies and a hot chocolate. What more could I want for my 65th birthday.🎂

  • Holwell Gorge

    15 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Did a nice drive today. Heading back through Beaconsfield to Holwell Gorge. Was a rough walk, but it was worth it. Spotted some great fungi. Feeling very adventurous.
Then, on to Brady's Lookout. Where the bushranger Matthew Brady was hung after being discovered in a nearby cave. Spectacular view along the Tamar River and out to Ben Lomand.
Looped through Launceston. Down, though, Windemere to visit St Mary, a history Anglican Church across the river from Brady's Lookout. Short drive from there back to our camp at Mike and Annie's.

  • Waratah

    18–20 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Stopped over last night at Burnie on the way through to Waratah. Was blowing a gale. Supposed to drop below 0° tonight. Waratah will be our first van park stop in ages.

What a pretty little town. It even has a waterfall. Lots of history from when tin was mined in the area.

Dropped to -2° our first night here. No snow, but a heavy frost. All the puddles were frozen.

  • Wild River National Park

    18 Mei 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Blessed with a sunny day. Made the most of it.
Visited Whyte Hills Lookout. Beautiful views. Plus a disturbing, but thoughtful statue inspired by the iconic photo of a Tasmanian Tiger strung up with the hunter.

Then on to Philosophers Falls. What a stunning walk. So many amazing fungi. Which I will add to a separate post. Was a fairly easy 3ks with some steep parts. Over 200 step to the Waterfall viewing platform.

Then we explored Waratah in the afternoon. So much to see and do in this area. Will be stopping in again on our way back from Strahan.

  • Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens

    19 Agustus 2025, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Camping at the Goondiwindi Show Grounds for the next 2 nights. We did plan the free camp by the river just out of town. Unfortunately, there is a heavy rain forecast tonight and tomorrow. With the high risk of getting bogged, we have decided to play it safe.
We did manage a stroll around the botanic garden this afternoon before the rain. Was so peaceful.

    20–22 Agu 2025, Australia ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Managed a little more exploring this morning before the rain set in 🌧.
Checked out the statues on the road near the airport. These were such fun.
Then around to the border bridge, the tree of knowledge and the Gunsynd memorial.
Such a nice town. So pleased we stayed over... even if it has been wet. We have passed through before, but not really stopped.
Plus, we had a family of Apostles birds drop by this morning.

    21–22 Agu 2025, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The rain clouds have cleared, and the sun is shining.
Travelled from Goondiwindi to Dirranbandi today. With a pitstop at St George to lay in a supply of our favourite port.
Was an excellent emu spotting day. A total of 13.
We are free camping tonight just south of Dirranbandi. It's fantastic to see all the creeks flowing. Usually, they are dry and dusty when we travel through here.

    22 Agustus 2025, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We were heading to Hebel today... but the navigator stuffed up ( HE will remain unnamed)
All was not lost. I enjoyed driving a less travelled road. Spotting an Emu dad and his chick's. Dodging roos and goats with death wishes. To end up in Bollon instead. The joys of exploring you never know what's ahead.Baca selengkapnya

    22–23 Agu 2025, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We were not planning to stop here, but we couldn't resist this great free camp. So pretty with all the gums along the creek. A short stroll along a concrete walkway takes you to the main street.
With free hot showers in an immaculate amenities block.
The shop had cheap fuel and a yummy range of local meat. Picked up some lamb.
This tiny country town goes out of its way to make visitors welcome.
