  • Hinton St George

    July 13, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Our first night stopover in the Lord Poulett Arms in the beautiful thatched hamlet of Hinton St George.

We managed a village walk to a local beauty spot - The Spreading Oak Tree (known locally as the Bouncing Tree due to the size of its boughs). Apparently it has the largest spread of boughs in the country.

Despite the longest summer drought, Hilary still managed to trash her trainers in the only boggy part of Somerset! Oh man!

Had a drink in the French garden at the pub next to a Boules Piste, although we didn’t play!

Lovely meal in the bar before calling it a night. Early start tomorrow to complete the drive to Mousehole.

None of the rooms have TVs! No bad thing imho......more to come tomorrow x

Well we’ve made, and what a hidden gem it is; very pretty.

In luck because a ‘Sea Salts & Sails’ maritime festival is happening this weekend. Sat on the harbour wall, sun shining and we’re enjoying our first Cornish beer.

    More to come....

  • St. Michael's Mount

    July 15, 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Following a lovely breakfast , with our walking shoes on and our trusty rucksack we set off to St Michaels mount ,6.6 miles one way . Sun shining. The coastal path dipped in and out of Newlyn and Penzance. We walked the last mile along the beach , admiring the all the shapes and sizes of the Sunday sunbathers 😘 .
Joining the National Trust ( a true sign of our ages) as we bought our entrance ticket to the mount . First stop Cornish clotted cream vanilla ice cream . Lovely 😊. Then along with many Chinese visitors ( that seemed to have followed us all the way from Canada) we explored the castle. Great views from the top .
Just before we set off on our walk back we stopped for a cool glass of Pims and a pint 🍺.
6.6 miles back , same route. A little sunburned 🤭
Needed to lie down with throbbing feet elevated when we got back .

  • Walk to Lamorna Cove

    July 16, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

A rain delayed start to the day's play ,which meant that we had a leisurely breakfast and a read of the papers .
Set off at 11 am heading south on the coastal path from Mousehole.
Pre warned it was a little rocky in places ( and thats the truth ! ) and rather
close to the edge ! We walked to Lamorna Cove . A beautiful little gem . Just a few houses and the obligatory cafe . Just the perfect spot for a cream tea 😋 xxx

Update.....well earned beer in the Ship Inn back in Mousehole.....🍺🍺🍺

  • First Full Day in St. Ives.....

    July 18, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

So today we decided to try to walk the coastal path to Zennor again . On our last trip 4 years ago we got 3/4 of the way and then turned around.
    Today we did it !!!!
It's noted as one of the most challenging parts of Cornwall's coastal path . That is the TRUTH!!
Wild , literally breath taking, challenging, steep , boulder climbing , not really comparable to the 6 miles as the crow flies !!!
Feel like we need some kind of medal for achieving it . Only our fellow hikers can understand our pain .
These pics honestly do not show the reality of this walking challenge !!!!

  • Last night in St Ives

    July 20, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

This evening we visited The Upper Deck bar . Then on recommendation we went to the new Thai restaurant on the harbour. Lucky to get a seat . They don't take bookings . Had a fantastic ( however not very traditionally Cornish ) meal . Then we walked along the harbour wall one last time . Listened to the local singers outside The Sloop . Then went to bed .
I have to say I love ths place . A little bit touristy and in places tatty around the edges . But I have some fabulous memories from our visits here . The Sloop is perfect in every way for me ( I think Richard would prefer something a little more refined ) 😉 . One day we will re visit I hope Xx Bye for now St Ives . It's been fantastic xxxx

  • Porthtowan - Update

    July 24, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Our last day . The rain arrived early whilst we were having breakfast . Only fine rain with a promise for glorious sunshine later in the day .
First time this holiday we had to don our cagoules . We explored St Agnes village .
About half a mile from the cove where we are stopping .
Then we set off on our last walk .
8.4 miles round trip to Porthtowan . Stopping briefly for a hedgehog ice cream in Chapel Porth .
This coast line is a surfers paradise . We watched them for some time whilst sat on the cliffs .
The sunshine arrived in full force at lunchtime and sun cream replaced our cags .
We got back to Trevaunance Cove at about 4 pm . Worn out .....
After a brief respite we settled for a evening drink in the pub whilst we mused about what to eat tonight .

    UPDATE...

We ended up in the Taphouse....a laid back local haunt that has live music. Cornish mussells and fish cakes.... What's not to like?
